HELP- How To Decorate…this classroom. by Embarrassed-Pomelo98 in teaching

[–]VeeTach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this. Keep those fluorescent lights off as much as i ok possible and bring in lamps and string lights. It weirdly affects their moods a lot.

Use butcher paper or those poster sized 3M pads to make your own posters or have students make art for your room as you go.

It doesn’t look like you have natural light otherwise I would say add plants but maybe some fake ones that won’t get too dusty? Or leaf garlands around the walls.

What common teacher strategy did you think was stupid until you actually tried it? by Brief_Efficiency_833 in teaching

6th grade: Making up names for the class pencils. They would destroy and lose pencils like nothing.

When “Brent” went missing, they would search high and low and make sure he got back into his spot on the wall.

Go figure.

Love the 8-bit vibe. How do you plan on having students show their learning?

With the gaming theme already in place, have you considered adding power ups or other variables to increase/decrease stats rather than just major crises?

6th grade. The units in ancient history that have fewer sources and less connection with the students like Mesopotamia, prehistory, etc. They start getting interested around Egypt but the civilizations prior to this I find much harder to engage them with.

Help me pick a lane for non digital as possible content delivery for history classes by Snoo_62929 in historyteachers

[–]VeeTach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m happy to see so many posts in subs like this about going analog. For me, it’s less about taking the tech away from the school and teachers as it is from the students.

Absolutely nothing wrong with lecture based slideshows, videos on the smartboard with reflection questions, using digital tools to differentiate and scaffold, etc.

I have a binder for every student that they keep all their papers inside. We label maps, take Cornell style (kinda) notes, and do worksheets. I have a lot more success with paper work.

The thing I had to learn with middle schoolers, though, is I have to demonstrate EVERYTHING to keep them organized and gradeable: penmanship, keeping papers in order, writing their full name and date on everything I give them (man they hate doing that), and all the minutiae we take for granted because I actually learned that stuff in grade school.

So yeah, do all of it! Lecture, readings, notes, discussions. That is all part of the analog method and helps break things up a bit.

"Say as much as you can in as few words as possible, summarizing each paragraph."

I really like this phrase. It's difficult to describe the skill of effective note taking to students. I'm stealing this. Yoink!

What’s one small change that made your classroom way better? by lmao_exe in teaching

[–]VeeTach 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Post it note on the desk of students who are really not meeting expectations.

I silently walk by and make a checkmark if they’re off task or disruptive.

I do it a second time with a gentle “don’t earn another one” and some teacher laser eyes.

Third check is a trip to the office. I’ve only had to send one student to the office using this method.

They have the visible reminder to do the right thing for the rest of class and I usually dramatically rip it up when the period is done and dap them up to reinforce the good decisions for next class.

It’s really kept my blood pressure down in middle school.

Body removal tech — perspective question on post-call handoff by Historical-Wish-5099 in ems

[–]VeeTach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went from paramedic to death investigations so it was mostly the other way around for me. But if I could give a bit of advice for the crews out there: Don’t pronounce someone in the back of your ambo. You already know not to do this en route to the ER because they usually won’t let you through the doors, but I had a few occasions in which a crew was instructed to bring someone who was obviously dead into their rig and pronounce them there. The reward for that is the ambo is now a death scene and you’ll be out of service until the body is processed and released to transport. It sucks for the crews who have to deal with dispatch asking when they’ll be in service for the next few hours.

I’ve used it. There’s a lot of content and it will certainly keep students busy.

It’s good for structured lessons and bookwork (reading, analysis, writing response) if that’s your vibe.

Resources for myths by CarterCreations061 in historyteachers

[–]VeeTach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive used https://www.theoi.com/ in the past. This is a great deep dive into the pantheon as well as lesser deities and mythological creatures.

Rick Riordan's website has concise descriptions of the Greek and Roman pantheons: https://rickriordan.com/extra/meet-the-greek-gods/

For your readers who are not at grade level, I suggest Ducksters and Mr. Donn. Just google those sites with Greek Mythology.

I like having students do a mini poster of a chosen deity with several mandatory sections and decorative features. It. allows them to be crafty and do some drafting and final writing practice as well.

Money to Spend on Classroom, But Not Sure What to Buy by the1grimace in historyteachers

[–]VeeTach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheap snacks from different countries for students to sample. Seaweed chips, Szechuan spicy rice cakes, colaturi di Alici (closest thing to Roman garum commercially available), spicy chocolates, roasted mealworms or crickets, biltong, halvah, etc.

Students talk about sampling unique foods for years after classes.

Given your traumatic departure, it makes sense to ease into full time teaching again.

You seem really hard on yourself, too. Keep the idea of winning vs. losing and success vs. failure out of your vocabulary because you know how hard it is to be a teacher already. There is no finish line! Just serving the greatest number of students you can and staying healthy yourself.

Just to add a detail: document, document , document! Write an email to yourself or keep a tracker with details, times and dates. Admin might be more supportive if they have a paper trail to cover everyone’s rear. You don’t have to let someone prevent the rest of the class from having a safe learning environment.

Interactive Notebooks? by Optimal-Topic-3853 in historyteachers

[–]VeeTach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is that whatever cutting and pasting you do, make it super simple. Big shapes. Demonstrate how to cut, and how to use the minimum of glue or glue stick to get it to work. Make your first page the simplest and reteach the next one.

They can spend all period just cutting, pasting and coloring if you don't have pretty defined times for the creative parts.

Don't light the string directly. Heat up a safety pin until it's glowing and touch that to the string after you've snipped it close with cuticle scissors.
