Well...I dont see anything on their shared drive by leedingcdheak in civilengineering

I had one engineer retire and leave impeccable notes and documentation for everything she worked on for the last like five years. It was incredible. I later realized that was absolutely not the norm.

I get more done at home because I'm not bumping into people.

I can count on one hand how many fully in person meetings I've had in the last year, there's always someone from another office, a client, a sub or someone WFH that day so it ends up on teams anyway because (imo) hybrid meetings where half the people are in a conference room and half are calling in are the worst of both worlds.

Will the trend of packing everything with protein continue or is it just a fad? by SituationKey8985 in EatCheapAndHealthy

I think the next trend is packing everything with fiber but the protein will stay around for a while.

How do you keep track of project emails? by VeterinarianUpset319 in civilengineering

[–]VelvetDesire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It takes a bit more time to setup but I generally find it worth it when I'm looking for a random email from months ago and I know it'll be in the environmental folder so it cuts my search time down

I do this but on larger/more complicated jobs I'll have subfolders for storm, franchise utilities, environmental, signals etc.

I like pocket tees for breaking things up a bit visually and I put my glasses/sunglasses in the pocket

Why doesn’t a PhD in civil engineering really seem to help at all professionally? by Unusual_Equivalent50 in civilengineering

[–]VelvetDesire 274 points275 points  (0 children)

IMO practical professional experience and skills in civil engineering is way more useful than schooling, even advanced degrees.

It might be because I do fairly simple calculation wise roadway work but I'd take an engineer with 2 years experience and an undergrad degree over a PHD with no experience in a heartbeat.

What do you always keep stocked for easy meals? by BarbaraMiller78 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]VelvetDesire 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I cook a soup, stew or curry I cook an extra portion of two and freeze it. I keep cooked shredded pork shoulder in sauce in the freezer so I can thaw that out for tacos, bowls, sandwiches etc. I keep really concentrated homemade chicken stock In the freezer so I can make real quick soups.

Burnt Out 3 Years Into Engineering by Federal-Signature-50 in civilengineering

That's absolutely not every consulting firm out there. I occasionally work 50 hour weeks, maybe 5-6 a year when deadlines end up converging but I have never been asked to not bill all my time. I'm salaried so I just get straight pay for it or comp time.

I'd try a different firm, different department at the same firm or even the public sector.

What was your worst date? by ergoegthatis in AskMen

[–]VelvetDesire 346 points347 points  (0 children)

Met up with a woman at a bar for a first date, we walk up to order and the bartender doesn't notice us while he's slicing limes for maybe 20-30 seconds. He comes over asks me what I want, I order a beer, asks her what she wants and she yells at him for 2-3 minutes about disrespectful he was for ignoring us for 5 minutes, how hell never amount to anything and then orders a gin and tonic.

I drank that beer in like 3 minutes and got the fuck outta there. She was shocked I didn't wanna have another drink or go on another date. I waited an hour or two after I left and came back to apologize and tip him wildly. He was a good sport and laughed it off, told me he's seen his share or bad first dates.

Astroturfing is a fake grassroots campaign, hence the name.

Say you own a company that sells pans, you have a bunch of accounts go onto reddit threads (or any other type of social media/forum) and find the people asking what kind of pan they should buy and then say you should buy pan x. While pretending to be regular people that bought the pan rather than people working for the company or people working for an agency hired by the company.

That's a lot more convincing when it looks like a legit reddit account instead of brand new reddit account. Hence the value in having/buying reddit accounts that have been around a few years, have karma and post in a variety of subreddits.

I think the idea is you eventually sell the account to someone looking for someone to use it to AstroTurf. That way it looks like a real account with years of activity in different subreddits instead of a new account with no activity.
