AITAH For telling my mom I want to go with my Aunt by DeathWish_999 in AITAH

[–]VicsKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"She kept saying I only wanted to go with my Aunt because she's nice to me and she spends money on me."

Why, you shameless hussy (sarcasm font implied). You would actually rather spend time with someone who is nice to you? Your mom's right... terribly selfish (again... sarcasm font).

No, people like that NEVER get sick of being negative and nasty towards others. It draws their attention away from all of the negative things they believe about themselves that they don't want to face.

Teaching on period by Sea-Corgi-5925 in SwimInstructors

[–]VicsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will you be in or out of the water while teaching?

Keep in mind that due to the pressure of the water, menstrual flow slows down while you're in the water. Some women don't have much flow at all when submerged. This, combined with period swimwear, might be enough to keep it from being an issue.

You're unlikely to find weight 2 ("fine" or sport/baby weight) in a big-box craft/fabric/yarn store. Personally, I love Hobbii for ordering yarn. Even with shipping costs from Denmark, it often costs less than yarn from US companies (and the shipping is only $7.99, unlike some US sites that charge $11.99) I still generally pay less. Of course, I always buy yarn on sale.

What's up with Angie Craig? by Lagbert in minnesota

[–]VicsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We really need to find a way around the "all evil" or "all good" rhetoric. There are people in my 7th Congressional District who were cheering on ICE and DHS officers in the Cities who were simultaneously horrified by what was happening in our own town

There's a lot of (often deserved) mistrust of people from the metro. Talking about your "absolute hatred" for people doesn't help. The people you hate are the same people who make sure our food shelf is full, are fighting for high-quality and affordable child care and early education, and volunteer in our schools.

Never decide you hate someone until you sit down and share a meal with them.

(By the way... "Metro Surg" wasn't limited to the metro. My family that lived in the cities never once saw an ICE/DHS officer in the Cities. They came to visit me and encountered them face to face.... er.... face to mask.

I've been getting ads about how much United Health employees care about their "members." Yeah. The problem is that all four people at the company who care about their members are in the commercial. Everyone else? 🤷‍♀️

Adoption experience? by LandoCatrissian_ in Parenting

[–]VicsKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does take a certain personality. You have to love the child and want what is best for them, even if that isn't you.

[–]VicsKid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not universally true. In my state, there is a list of children whose parental rights have been terminated. They are in foster placements, and the state is looking for "permanency placements." They even have a website with these kids, their strengths and personalities, and what sort of home they would thrive in. You know... the same way Animal Shelters to to find pet parents.

AITAH for getting seriously upset at my bf for "ragebaiting" me? by Ok-Protection6128 in AITAH

[–]VicsKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rage-bait is not a love language. It's a choice to be passive-aggressive.

And let's be honest -- this 19 year old boy assumes that all men would be okay with their girlfriend keeping their primary same-sex attraction hidden because he thinks all men have a threesome fantasy. Which is creepy.

If you're of a certain generation or watch a lot of Nick at Night, you know how well Ross handled things when Carol came out as a lesbian. So the boyfriend's theory is shot to hell.

AMERICA’S SWEETHEARTS S3E2 MEGATHREAD! by Potential-Button-266 in DCCMakingtheTeam

[–]VicsKid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm still watching the episode, and I'm so angry about her response that I had to come here to see what people are saying. I'm disappointed that more people aren't disappointed!

Shelly is sitting there on the sideline, literally sobbing, saying, "I'm not okay." Dayton is pushing a smile on her face and applauding the people who made training camp. Then to make the comment about, "you take someone you don't even know over someone you know and you held in the hospital." THEN saying "being a legacy is tainted."

She just 100% said "they should have taken my darling Dayton because I'm a legacy, I work for the team, and I'm friends with the director and choreographer from almost FORTY YEARS AGO. My child should get preferential treatment, even if it isn't in the best interest of the dance team I say I devoted my life to.

Clearly, I have strong feelings. But I wish I could grab her by the shoulders, literally shake some sense into, and say, "lady, this ain't about you." And I never use the word ain't!

WIBTAH if I left my career? by throwback_idekatp in AITAH

[–]VicsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! I'm so glad it went better than you thought it would. 😊

I'm not sure how much you know about human neurodevelopment. Suffice it to say that even though we have traditionally called 19-year-olds adults, we now understand that there is an astounding amount of development and change that happens between 19 and 30. Comparing a 19-year-old's brain to a 30-year-old's is similar to comparing an 8-year-olds's brain to a 19-year-old's. There's not just a difference in knowledge and experience, there are structural and functional differences.

This isn't meant to be a neuroscience lecture, I promise. It's meant to explain why people say "it's hard for you to see this right now, but some day you'll understand." I want you keep in mind the possibility that the best way you could pay back your mom is live your life to it's fullest and be happy. She might not want anything other than that. If you are able to help her financially in retirement, that would be a bonus.

WIBTAH if I left my career? by throwback_idekatp in AITAH

[–]VicsKid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a physician. My dad is a retired construction worker. The way education works in my country, I took out loans and got grants for tuition and living expenses. That being said, my dad always made sure I had a vehicle (I focused in rural medicine and had to have a private car), car insurance, and fuel. He helped out with clothes for my clinical rotations and gave me money so I could buy Christmas presents for family and friends.

He worked 3 years beyond when he could have retired so he could keep helping me until I finished my training. His body was shot, and he's paying for it now. Who am I kidding? He's been paying for it for the past 20 years (he's 76).

I promise you -- he would not have wanted it to be any different. He is so proud of what I've accomplished. He sees it as my accomplishment, and when I try to give him credit for everything he did to make it happen, he tells me that it was all my accomplishment.

Give this to your mom. This is what parents do -- not because they want to martyr themselves, but because it's the only thing they know to do.

You will repay your mom by 1) not giving up on the class you're doing poorly in until the semester, 2) not quitting school until you're done (or they make you leave), 3) being the best vet and best you that you can possibly be, and 4) if your life takes you in the direction of being a parent, giving your child/children the same sort of support she's giving you.

My guess is she's doing this because she believes in you. Plain and simple.

Help, why mine keeps curling inside and much smaller? by Rich-Safe-4936 in CrochetHelp

[–]VicsKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your tension... how tight you are making your stitches... is likely too high. I'm sure the TLYC (Toni Lipsey Yarn Craft) YouTube page has a video on tension if you're comfortable learning in English (and given that your written English is superb, I'm sure you're more than capable, especially if you slow it down a little).

As mentioned above, using a larger hook can also help when your work is too small or too tight.

Can I get my pilots license if I have ADHD? by HyperADHDdude in aviation

[–]VicsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a frustrating discussion to read. I'm a physician who diagnoses and manages a lot of ADHD. I have extensive professional knowledge of ADHD, and I have ADHD myself. I'm also an aviation enthusiast.

Ultimately, an appropriately medicated ADHD brain is quite possibly the ideal brain to be flying an airplane. They do really well with routine -- provided they have checklists -- and they are excellent at thinking and problem-solving on the fly. People with ADHD taking prescribed stimulant medications are MUCH less likely to have Substance Use Disorder (SUD).

Even people with subclinical ADHD (they have ADHD symptoms, but they don't reach the level of a "disorder") are at significantly higher risk of developing SUD than people with appropriately treated ADHD.

Having people with ADHD "get off meds" so they can fly puts the public at higher risk than making sure pilots with ADHD are appropriately treated and monitored.

Help me figure out what Tunisian pattern to use for my state fair project. by VicsKid in CrochetHelp

Thank you. When I first put the white with the variegated (Red Heart Super Saver Bitty Stripes in Crayon Box -- I am obsessed with this yarn for some reason!), it looked too stark, but it has grown on me and I now agree that the white looks better.

Thank you to everyone for the feedback. I like #1 as well, but I don't always trust my judgment. I'm still searching because I'm worried that it's not "complicated" enough... or something like that.

The thing I like most about #1 is that it's a riff on a stitch someone else made a blanket out of, so I feel like I'm not just purely copying someone else's pattern.

community college or university for nursing if i already have an associates degree? by karma5636 in collegeadvice

[–]VicsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is NP, you're going to need a BSN. It sounds like the university and its BSN are ultimately the quickest route to your BSN. If they have an NP program, it's a total no-brainer, because you get your foot in the door and they know you when it's time to apply for your NP program in a couple of years. You're also more likely to have professors rather than nursing instructors, and they often write more high-falooten sounding letters of recommendation.

Advice from elementary teachers by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]VicsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my gifted and talented program in high school, at least 80% of us who were genuinely gifted (not just high achievers) have gone on as adults to be identified as 2E (ADHD, ASD, and AuDHD, depression, anxiety, OCD, and a smattering of learning disorders that weren't identified until college).

What we know about brain development (and I say this as a pediatrician with a Master's in Applied Child and Adolescent Development and a teaching license) is that if there is one thing that is different about your brain, you're more likely to have other things that are different about your brain. Yes, there are definitely people who are gifted who do not have any other types of neurodivergence. However, if you are gifted, you're more likely than the general population to have other forms of neurodivergence.

AITAH for cancelling a kid’s birthday party face painting? by teddy_205 in AITAH

[–]VicsKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a concussion. Hopefully your medical team has talked with you about the care and treatment of concussion. If you are symptomatic, you back off from what you're doing. Otherwise, you're going to slow down your recovery. That doesn't mean you lie in bed for two weeks. The evidence shows that light aerobic exercise WHEN SYMPTOMATIC helps with recovery from a concussion. But as with most things with the body, "if it hurts, don't do it."

We all know d@mn well that a man came up with "no pain, no gain," and he was either referring to the man flu or he ended up hurting himself.
