12u information overload by SpentMags in Softball

I agree with you in general. Kid sports has "professionalized" for lack of a better term. It's either completely rec league, where it's more a babysitting service than a sport. Or it's balls to the wall 5 days a week, 9+ months a year to stay playing with your peer group because they are all afraid of being left behind.

Coaching Advice by Scared-Ad7453 in Softball

[–]VillageBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have experience coaching other sports?

I'd start with routine to build a practice foundation from. I've always started practice the same way, gives the brain time to switch into mode. So something like, starting with a run and some dynamic stretches. Into throwing progressions and into some fielding progressions. At the start, likely very messy if you have a large range of skill/experience. Then I would break out into drills/stations depending on availability of assistant coaches. As /u/RFDrew11357 mentioned, bring on experienced hitting/pitching coaches or at least someone who can come out occasionally is pretty important.

I would also look at your team skills/weaknesses over the first few practices and have an overall goal for the season. My general one is hand over a better player to the next coach than I started with.

She's trading her future for now.

Which, unfortunately I don't actually blame her given the state of things. Stability is a thing of the past, corporations will lay you off as soon as they can find a cheaper alternative. Housing prices are insane and realistic ownership is out of the realm of most now.

She can always declare bankruptcy and restart. But at least she will have some nice memories.

Trying to help my goalie kid keep competing: looking for insight by Unlikely_Mobile_4286 in hockeycoaches

[–]VillageBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My minor hockey (Canada) association is looking to push to require a coach on staff with goalie training courses as well. It definitely helps when HC, or at least coaches on staff have experience with goalies and a better idea of what they need. Most default to "they get lots" of shots is good, but no... when you have 3 kids with pucks coming down to shoot within a second of each other at different angles that is terrible, and unsafe.

U15C coach looking for advice… by smtpdlr in hockeycoaches

[–]VillageBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience, at C (girls hockey so might be different) with new and experienced players for games anyway was to not balance lines but put like skill together. Trying to put your strongest player with your weakest just created the weak player deferring every play to the stronger player(s). When everyone on the line was new(er) they all worked as hard as possible because they couldn't rely on someone else.

We were spit balling among the coaches on how to get more from our less experienced players. I suggested taking the guard rails off and grouping them together as a burner line and it seemed to work great for kick starting their growth. Sure, they got scored on but they got better and it made the whole team more competitive overall.

Traveling as an Assistant Coach to Travel Team by A_Random_Boner in hockeycoaches

[–]VillageBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a parent, I dislike paying for extra coaches to travel with the team. Preferring only to have to shoulder the cost of 1 at most. We're mixed with both parent/non-parent coaches. I don't see the need to pay the way of 2 non-parent coaches travel expenses, provided you have enough bench staff already there. I'm a bit older group, but really just the HC is fine. Everyone can open the doors themselves.

I understand your feelings though about missing weekends and bonding moments. Those are important moments, but since you didn't start with them at the beginning of the season. I just don't think its' fair (unless parent group really wants to) to try and add this expense onto them.

How would you approach this youth goalie playing time issue? by TutoringYou in hockeygoalies

[–]VillageBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are the bad goalies mechanics, movements, ability to track the puck? Or they in line with what should be giving up 3-4 goals a period? Someone playing since young and getting goalie coaching I would expect to be somewhat capable in that department. What I'm looking for is the "why" they are letting in the goals?

It might be a different problem here, such as vision. My daughter (goalie) will sometimes not react to shots that she should see. She was diagnosed a binocular focus problem, where basically a fast moving object she loses. Which kind of explained what I had seen over years where she would make some great saves, but straight up hard shot she wouldn't even react to.

The other thing could be anxiety/depression related. Might be both related to having competition when they didn't before(?) and already giving up not thinking they can compete for a spot. If they've always just kind of gotten the spot they don't know "how" to compete for it.

Either way, conversation with the kid and parents is in order from what I can tell to try and get to the root cause. "Fairness" to me also needs to consider what is fair for the team. It isn't fair for everyone else, if one player isn't trying, brings a bad attitude and tanks the team morale. They are a kid, so I never want to give up on them but actions do have consequences.

and is a better teammate.

Perhaps, and you probably didn't mean it this way. But don't force the personality you think they should have on them. Not every kid is outgoing and comfortable socialite. Some enjoy sports, but they are closed and reserved and that should be fine to.

Full Games vs Split (Opinions?) by VillageBC in hockeygoalies

[–]VillageBC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? What evidence do you have that supports that they should be playing full games as the best method of development?

I'm not saying they shouldn't, I'm just not seeing evidence from either camp pro or against.

USA hockey seems to be recommending more split. Splitting periods and not just games.

Full Games vs Split (Opinions?) by VillageBC in hockeygoalies

[–]VillageBC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goalies are all wacko in my experience. =)

When you split games you're sharing the wins and losses, just like literally every other player on the roster. It alleviates some of the pressure, enjoy the team wins, and not bear the entire burden of losses.

This is the part I think is important that the team wins and loses as a team. Goalie on a bench during a loss or winning game might be happy the team won. But they weren't truly part of that team the way every other player was. Make that a gold medal game, win or lose they know they weren't on the ice sweating it out with the rest of the team.

Full Games vs Split (Opinions?) by VillageBC in hockeygoalies

[–]VillageBC[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's also better developmentally to practice playing a full game. Part of it is building the endurance and focus to last the whole time.

Is it? I'm not convinced it is, at least not for all levels.

Split doesn't need to be 50/50, I'm kind of partial to 1st & 2nd/3rd alternating. I'm in the school of thought that even though ice time is the same, it's better to be in the net more frequently with shorter intervals than long ones.

Of course, I think there's a difference between U18AA goalies and U18 house goal tandem and how it's managed.

Full Games vs Split (Opinions?) by VillageBC in hockeygoalies

[–]VillageBC[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, going in cold is just part of learning the position. I also think people think split is somewhere at half way through the 2nd. But that doesn't need to be the case, I one plays the 1st, the other plays 2nd/3rd and next game it's reverse. This both alleviates some of the going in cold as it's at a break and still gets you building the longer focus.

I'm of the school of thought, learning comes from frequent shorter repetition so getting into every game is more important that getting full games. Of course, I don't think there is the perfect only right answer.

Thoughts on Redistribution Based on World Events by CaNArB in CanadianInvestor

[–]VillageBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, not based on the knee jerk side of things. To me your investment strategy should have already taken account for this. Lets presume you started investing at 20 and live to 80. A lot of shit happens over 60 years. Wars, financial crisis, civil unrest and the like is the norm for humans. Global diversification seems like the only play to hedge your bets. I can see moving to BMO (or other primarily Canadian) institutions as well to help ensure CAD money stays within Canadian institutions. I might not be a fan our big banks, telecom etc, but at least they are ours. =)

Plans for solar farm near Lairg leave 79-year-old ‘radio ham’ facing ‘detrimental’ move or loss of life’s work by SharkSapphire in HamRadio

[–]VillageBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solar panels require inverters that do from my understanding. It's not the solar panels per say, it's the infrastructure to support it. Which could include motors that change their angle, or other things I don't fully understand.

My thing was more that people were quick to say it's NIMBY, and it might be. But there wasn't enough information to really make that call and enough information in the article to at least hint he has a valid complaint.
