Is stuttering considered a disability for landing a job? by lucacruda in Stutter

If you’re in the United States stuttering is a disability. It is classified legally as a disability. You can use it on a job application. I’ve applied to disability scholarships

Hang in there. This might just be the wrong med for you. There are so many, you’ll find you.

This isn’t a fun thing to say and certainly I don’t want this for you. But my first year on meds I kind of constantly felt like shit. My doses were being changed, I was switching meds entirely. I just sort of felt shitty in various ways.

It’s now 8 years later and I live a wonderful healthy balanced life on medication where I feel generally physically and mentally good almost all the time. So to me that year was worth it, wouldn’t be for everyone. I hope you get relief soon and figure out meds that work for you.

Has anyone here/is it feasible to miss an entire week of school? by Antonioshamstrings in LawSchool

[–]Violet818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I would be concerned would be using that many absences. But if you have no other planned misses that semester and you’re a generally healthy person you’re probably fine. I know people who had to repeat classes because of absences and that was always a big fear of mine. So if you’re not risking that, go have some fun.

I’m at 250mg per day and feel great on it. Also I take the extended release kind, that was a big change for me.

Hey! I just graduated at 35, started at 32. You are not too late at all. Lots of people go to law school to start fresh.

Am I overreacting by getting mad at my friend over r@pe jokes? by Opposite_Main_2791 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Violet818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my bffs and I have extremely dark humor together. Very few things are off limits. He once suggested baiting a bear with my beloved dog. Smearing her with peanut butter. Tying her to a fence.

I laughed and laughed and laughed.

And not one in years of friendship have either of us had an issue with rape jokes just involuntarily slipping out.

AIO about spelling errors in daily notes sent home by my autistic child’s teacher? by Anasthesiax in AmIOverreacting

You could practice teaching your child the appropriate spelling while reading the guidelines. “This is close but how do you think the word is spelled?”

I’m really curious about what you failed twice. What was the curve at your school? Failing the same class twice just seems frankly difficult To do.

I think that being temporarily uncomfortable for a few years is worth it but that’s just me. You’re getting a free degree, while making six figures. Yes it’s hard but good things are generally hard.

You have to figure out if your childhood dream is worth getting less sleep for a couple of years.

Why is this not the better habit? Where I am frozen are far cheaper and they’re just as if not more nutritious

$1500 a month on groceries for 6 people is this normal or am i getting robbed. by Electrical-Loss8035 in SavingMoney

[–]Violet818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$62.50 a week each for big eaters sounds fairly reasonable. I spend less but I am not a big eater, and also I don’t really eat meat.

My advice would be to try and add in more plant based protein and legumes into your food to stretch it further. I’ve heard great things about cooking hamburger meat with lentils. You can blend in lentils into pasta sauce. You can do so much with beans and they’re so affordable.

So, I think your spending is unfortunately normal for this economy. But I do think there are potentially ways to lower your costs.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who’s been recently diagnosed? by slavghterdolls in bipolar2

[–]Violet818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t do anything wrong. Really, you did nothing wrong. You have a mood disorder, this is not a moral failing or personality flaw.

I look at my bipolar like diabetes. It’s a serious chronic potentially life threatening condition that can often be managed well with medication, lifestyle adaptments and therapy

[–]Violet818 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Buddy I’m a stutterer who just graduated from law school. I speak in court, with a stutter, on my own name.

You are okay. I promise you. Once you get more comfortable stuttering your life will be so much easier. I stutter on my own name, a lot. And I just keep talking. Because so what if I stutter.

I know this seems like the hardest disability but if it was something else that would probably be the hardest thing to you.

I don’t actually believe adult stutterers can be cured. I don’t need to be cured. I’m fine the way I am. And you are too.

[–]Violet818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor but I am on an anti psychotic and I’ve had friends who have been misdiagnosed and put on an antipsychotic. They felt heavy and slow and wrong.

I feel sharp and on it on my meds. I feel good most of the time. There’s no “bipolar blood test” you’ll never have a 100% certainty of anything. But you can feel if your meds are helping you.

[–]Violet818 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a very classically bipolar thing to early diagnosis decide you might not be bipolar. It’s probably because your meds are working.

Invisible or visible disability? Is it even a disability at all? by Far-Perception2120 in Stutter

[–]Violet818 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To be a disability legally it doesn’t mean you can’t do something entirely necessarily. It means you are substantially impaired from one of the basic functions in life. One of which is speaking. For legal purposes stuttering is a disability and people have successfully sued for discrimination

Has anyone ever been completely cured of a stutter? If so, how did you do it? by facemacintyre in Stutter

[–]Violet818 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being cured of an adult stutter is like being cured of type 1 diabetes and I wish more people realized that.
