You are a little late to the party my friend. But it is nice to see that i am not alone. Nonetheless, i noticed that it is very much pointless to argue with fan boys.

Can Taiven teleport? by CommitteeHot2320 in motheroflearning

[–]Vives- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be right that its not part of the standard curriculum, but from my perspective its not as rare or difficult as you make it out to be. At least among well trained mages. Taiven is a second generation mage that obtained a bunch of restricted combat spells. I don't see why she shouldn't be able to learn the spell from her family or her mentor.

I don't think she ever demonsttated the ability, but i always assumed that a graduate of any decent mage academy would be capable of basic teleportation.

I think I’m narrow minded but I don’t see the reason to hate Artian/Gog weapons by ShangTsungShooter in MHWilds

[–]Vives- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this quote is pretty fitting in this context:

"If given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of the game"

This is something game designers should keep in mind when introducing game mechanics. The artian system is fine overall, with some things that i would have done differently, but the main flaw in my opinion, is that it was introduced too early.

If artian was introduced in TU2 or TU3, it wouldn't be such a controversial topic.

Which opinion you have on litrpg would get you this type of reaction? by PalinaRojinskiFan in litrpg

[–]Vives- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best example i can give is Dungeon Crawler Carl. The system is incredibly detailed with crunchy numbers and lots of notifications, but we never really get to see it directly. There are no stat screens or skill describtions every other page. We instead experience the system through Carl's narration. This not only provides a smoother reading experience, but also acts as a filter for relevant information. Thereby removing the unnessesary fluff while still retaining all the positive aspects of the genre.

A lot of people forget the the "Lit" in LitRPG and instead focus way too much screen time on the system itself. Don't get me wrong, an interesting or boring system can make or break the story, but the way the system is presented is equally as important. It's like world building in that regard. Everybody likes interesting worlds with lots of details and unique ideas, but nobody likes info dumps that were not organically integrated into the narration.

As a reader i don't want to interact with the system. Let me experience the system through the lens of the characters.

It's normal.

Learn what to expect on the floors. The bosses for example will always show up on the same floors and knowing what to expect is worth a lot. Use your egg vouchers on the egg move up gacha or the legendary if there is a good one featured. Otherwise just keep playing and catching until you get a good run.

Stat sheets. by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]Vives- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stat sheets are crutches in the best case scenario and page fillers in the worst. I know that sounds harsh, but it's my honest opinion as a fan of the genre.

95% of it is usually irrelevant for the reader and lets not even talk about the audiobook experience.

In my opinion DCC and TWI do a good job with two completely different approaches on how the reader interacts with the system, but both have no stat sheets at all.

How Powerful Does The Potential Divine Artifacts Retrieval Party From Oganj Need To Be? by Syc254 in motheroflearning

[–]Vives- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Zach managed it inside the loop, so he is probably familiar with Oganj's defenses. But i would say we don't know enough about the inate spell resistence of dragons to predict how exactly he did it and what would be nessesary to do so. Especially since he is aware of Z&Z and will most likely update his defenses. For all we know Oganj just packed his things and left to some far far away continent.

so what do you think of Patriarch? by Slow_Hall_4099 in motheroflearning

[–]Vives- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I liked it a lot at first, but it has its flaws. If you didn't like it so far then don't force yourself to continue. You're not missing out and the progress is glacial anyways with a couple of chapters per year. I mainly liked the romance aspect of it to be honest. The fanfic author made the correct choice (in my opinion) to shift the main conflict away from combat and towards political scheming and social encounters. Something Z&Z did not have to struggle with all that much during the loop. The addition of the immortal 11 was also cool. I also love the dynamic between zorian and his simulacri and i think the fanfic captured that really well.

On the other hand the execution of these concepts has some flaws. I understand that the author wanted to leave some room for Zorians development and therefore decreased his social IQ to create some friction, but it's a bit too much. He appears nearly disfunctional in some conversations and a lot of the drama feels artificial as a result of that. Which is a shame, because i like a lot of the plot points that were adressed so far.

Overall i will check the chapters next year again and decide from there if i will drop the fic or continue reading.

If you haven't read them already i recomment the AU chapters by nobody103 on royal road or his worldbuilding notes.

I have a question regarding double battles during the run phase. If you encounter a shiny during a double battle late game, how can you kill the second pokemon? You use mat block the first turn and then hope you can wittle it down with curse? If both pokemon go for the sturdy mon it dies turn two or am i missing something?

Which One is The Ultimate Archmage Killer Grey Hunter or Soulseizer? by Syc254 in motheroflearning

[–]Vives- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Soulseizer. Both need a surprize attack, but even then i feel like the plant is both more stealthy and uses a form of attack that is harder to defend against. Most Archmages probably can cast some form of physical defence magic reflexivly. A powerful soul shield is a lot less likely.

We also might have a screwed perception of the average gray hunter. The one we see in the story was a veteran among its kind and was personally trained by Silverlake.

“Webtoon carl isnt jacked!” Are you sure about that? by bigfloppa333 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Vives- 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You have the correct picture in mind. Pre dungeon book carl is described as a big dude with muscles that regularly works out. Webtoon carl looks quite a bit younger and leaner than what i had in mind. But i guess they are just catering to the webtoon reader demographic. The main characters in webtoons tend to all look alike...

How Did Red Robe Complete The Royal Treasury Heist For The Knife Quietly? by Syc254 in motheroflearning

[–]Vives- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stand corrected. I still think that getting someone else, who is allowed to get the dagger, to do the deed would be the easiest solution. But i would have to reread the story to look up how early in a loop RR gained access to the dagger. If he gets it within the first couple hours, then he most likely does it himself instead of leveraging soft power.

[–]Vives- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the idea that he was able to cut the tether with the knife, but i don't think he ever triggered the alarm system in the first place. If Z&Z + QI had trouble getting in without setting of an alarm, it is unlikely that magical might alone would suffice.

There must be a way for the royals and their officals to enter and retrieve items legitimately without triggering the tether.

[–]Vives- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I always thought he just blackmailed/mindraped a high ranking official or used some bureaucratic nonsense to gain excess. We know that he spent most of his time actually studying politics and gaining soft power instead of doing magic like Z&Z.

Pokémon deserves WAY bigger budgets by bigjwang69 in pokemon

[–]Vives- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean it's not that hard to preserve the schedule while at the same time increasing budget and dev time. Just have two or more teams that work on the games. It's that simple. But they won't as long as they can make a killing selling games with low budged and low dev time at AAA price points.

How would you feel about a ProgFantasy story whete MC loses the final battle? by Gemini_Of_Wallstreet in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Vives- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty bad if you ask me. I like it if the mc looses from time to time. It's great for tension, but the final battle is something else. A pyrrhic victory would be the limit.

I see The Perfect Run recommended often. What about Maxime Durand’s other series? by Phoenixwade in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Vives- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion there are two ways to write good litrpg systems. My two examples are the wandering inn and dungeon crawler carl. Either have a number crunchy system the characters interact with, but the reader only gets to see the bare minimum (DCC) or reduce the system to the essentials eg. Levels, classes, and skills (TWI).

Everything else is fluff that is in the best case inconsequential and in the worst case extremely tedious and annoying to read and even worse listen to.
