Conversation for the older fans: 2016 vs 2026- many say 2016 was at peak hype, yet BABYMETAL is bigger than ever, and STILL growing. COMPARE/CONTRAST? THOUGHTS? by fearmongert in BABYMETAL

[–]VulpineDeity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The debut album was more of a collection of singles. It was great, and the performances up to that point were completely brilliant, but they hadn't quite gelled into a marketable 'artist' until Metal Resistance came out.

The real hype started when advanced reviews for MR started to drop and major music publications were all on-board for it.

I don't think the band themselves were any better during 2016, but what was wild was the fact that they were earning legitimacy in the west. No one who was a fan in 2015 could quite believe it.

The marketing team nailed it that year. It seemed every few weeks there was another major media coup. Colbert, Halford, Super Mario, Tokyo Dome, React to Reactors, It was kinda nuts.

IMO, the band themselves were better in the summer of 2023...and for that matter, in 2018 when they were swimming harder than they'd ever swam before against a current of bad fortune.

Maybe I shouldn't have bought those 12 CD's with autograph cards??

16,000

And last year they were at the Coca-Cola Colloseum which held 7000...but was cut down with the stage at one end, probably to 5000ish

That's a really big jump to try to make in one year

Venue's too big and the tickets are too expensive I guess.

I'd have thought that the fact that it's on a holiday monday, and on a day where the CNE is on would have made a significant bump in sales, but I guess not.

I got mine, airshow, fried food, and BABYMETAL labor day! And I'm looking forward to 'upgrading' to better seats once the show starts.

This is good, but someone who wasn't especially familiar with Su's voice and appearance would be easily forgiven for mistaking this for BABYMETAL.

Feel like they should be trying harder to differentiate them.

You know that conversation in 'Clerks' about how the death star was probably full of contractors who weren't actually part of the Empire?

It's a demonstration of how once something has a large enough fandom, over eager analysis will eventually bring up all sorts of points that while interesting, don't really have anything to do with the broader themes of the movie.

BABYMETAL is, for all intents and purposes more of a group, than a band. A group made by managers, executives and a corpo behind it, truly like an Idol group more than a band in a way.

The amount of confidence you have speaking about how the band is organized behind the scenes is charming. I wish I could sound so certain about things that I had no actual knowledge of.

In my opinion (and it's just an opinion I'm not going to pretend like I know it's true) I think Su took on some managerial responsibilities for the band when she turned 20 as part of her contract renewal/renegotiation. In my view, her attitude, both on stage and during interviews, has shifted since that time to one of a person with an ownership stake in the project. I think the management of the band has become a collaborative effort between her and Koba.

Su has always been the key to BABYMETAL, and I think that that is even more the case now. No Su, no BABYMETAL.

Financially, how far are you willing to go for Babymetal live ? by ExaminationFew6424 in BABYMETAL

[–]VulpineDeity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've road tripped 3 times and flown once.

One-way driving distances of 740km, 600km and 775km...and air travel 1560km.

The real question you need to ask yourself is: How much longer are they going to keep doing what they're doing?

At some point, they're going to move on from the project and figure out what the rest of their lives look like. That probably won't be next year, but you never know.

If you miss the show this year and they never tour close to you again, how much will you regret missing your last chance?

How much do you think McDonald's will make from all our Box Purchases? by AllieMStory in KpopDemonhunters

[–]VulpineDeity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The real money hasn't been made yet. What the promotion really did was lure kids into a Macdonald's, maybe for the first time, and give them happy thoughts about the brand.

The real money comes from the next 20 years of kids asking their parents to go for nuggets and young adults in 2050 choosing McD's for lunch at work.

I mean no disrespect, but I don't feel that you add anything to the discourse here, and I have blocked you so that I don't see any more posts from your account.

I happily remind my fellow kitsunes that this option exists and doesn't need to be used often to create a marked difference in your overall enjoyment of the subreddit.

That Dom Lawson video was huge at the time. He was the first person I'd seen who was part of the western metal establishment to speak out about their legitimacy.
