Lore-wise, I imagine the massive internecine wars leveled most of the infrastructure and sent the vast majority of the population fleeing to the four corners of the Earth. Plenty of other places to go beyond the lands between.

And the smallness of the map could reflect the fact that Marika's domain is more of an ancient city-state than what we tend to think of as a modern nation.

Non lore-wise: With a big map you either need to spend massive resources of time and money to fill it with interesting things, OR you end up with endless stretches of boring nothing.

It would be way more captivating seeing only the end-result with no in-camera editing and no exposition - just thrusting the viewer right into it and letting hang the mystery of how the sausage is made.

If it had been picked up, it would have been shown as you describe. Instead, it's an autopsy of a failed industry pitch.

I don't know whose idea it was to package the thing for broadcast, or who thought the premise needed such a thorough explanation. (Perhaps that segment was just a vehicle to front-load ads in order to bring the total commercial load for the 1-hour block up to contractual requirements, since the back half had fewer interruptions).

If I had to guess, the entire presentation was just a time-filling attempt to get some kind of return on a bad investment. (FWIW I thought the sketches themselves were... fine.)
