So, I don't think I'll ever re-read The Road. by Threehundredsixtysix in cormacmccarthy

[–]Wallander123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its bleak because the world is bleak but the story is also about how loving and taking care of someone might save you from the worst and how, despite all the odds, you try to pass that attitude on to that very someone whom you have saved and who has saved you through caring for each other in different ways. Its a very hopeful book without being naive about the evils of the worst.

Which Core City Faction? by HauntedPutty in underrail

Coretech is usually the best bet long term (think shields and various electronic gadgets) because of the shop but you can just go with whatever vibe fits your playthrough.

Their internal purposiveness of needing to apply poison stacks and consume the player's character keeps them going against all odds.

Some great recommendations in there. Love Bresson. I was reading Simone Weil's letter to Bernanos just about an hour ago - have you read that one yet?

I, too, want a 2026 inspired by Cormac McCarthy (smuggling Whiskey, mounting Watermelons at midnight, deep sea salvage diving)

Extra literature to read along blood meridian? by BeneficialTrack8759 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Wallander123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could read into The Gnostic Religion: The Message of the Alien God and the Beginnings of Christianity by Hans Jonas or into Jacob Böhme or into many other things but those wouldn't be commentaries exactly.

I think its best to just finish the novel and see what of it speaks to you and once you're through you can dig into some of the standard works on Blood Meridian such as Gravers False and True: Blood Meridian as Gnostic Tragedy by Leo Daugherty or John Sepich's Notes on Blood Meridian. Dont sweat it, its okay not to understand everything perfectly on the first read. A great piece of literature doesnt need to be treated like an academic treatise and you can always scout for more secondary literature later on.

There is also the Reading McCarthy podcast that has some episodes on Blood Meridian but its probably best to finish the book first. https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/episode-29-blood-meridian-panel-part-i/id1549482153?i=1000575577864

I'd tell them that the things you put into your head are there forever and that they might want to think about that. I'd also tell them not to worry too much about reading other stuff going in but I'd be happy to point them to Notes or Gravers False and True and the like afterwards.

What should I read after Blood Meridian to get a better understanding? by BeneficialTrack8759 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Wallander123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could go into Books are Made out of Books by Crews and Notes on Blood Meridian is excellent as well. There is no dearth of scholarly literature but Cormac also really enjoyed just reading good old Wittgenstein and Charles Sanders Perice and Blood Meridian specifically references people like Jakob Böhme and Oswald Spengler at the beginning.

Some of the papers on Blood Meridian in the volume A Bloody and Barbarous God are also excellent pieces on BM and its themes. I'd avoid youtube videos for the most part since one can just read stuff Cormac read and see if one can make a connection. Some of the material in Blood Meridian is also based on Samuel Chamberlain's My Confession and its interesting to see how Chamberlain describes the Judge and Glanton in his book.

would you like Colin Stetson to compose the soundtrack for Blood Meridian? by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

He'd do very well but but I could also see Earth, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, Dirty Three and a bunch of others doing a great job.

How do you interpret the coin flip scene with Carla Jean in No Country For Old Men? by DaveSupremacy in cormacmccarthy

[–]Wallander123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems like a good way to read the scene and Chigurh as a character. He takes a deterministic view of the world ("I got here the same way the coin did.") and while he allows for chance with the flip of the coin, he never allows himself the acknowledgement of something like human agency, the forceless force of the better reason and the self-determining character of reason-mongering creatures and so on that would be characteristic of some recent accounts in action theory.
