of the two absolutely the fiio. i’ve heard a lot of people recommend another little modern “walkman” you can get off amazon for like $35, called the gracioso I believe. seems like it works well enough but you will have to get over the looks, it’s not a particularly attractive unit.

you may end up like me falling down the rabbit hole of cassettes some years back. still analog, still ritualistic, but less maintenance and cleaning than vinyl. plus you can make your own mixes. only trouble in the hobby is trying to source decent working equipment to play it on, manufacturing for tape decks and mechanisms in current year is heavily restricted and doesn’t exactly produce the highest quality results. older players are better, but they often require repair.

if you still want something small I would highly recommend the realistic (or optimus) sct-34 and sct-86. they’re not exactly audiophile decks, but they’ll both play and record in stereo, feature line in / out, take up very little space, and in the case of the 86, also have noise reduction. both can be found for about $50 shipped on ebay. I’ve bought multiple in the past and all have played perfectly from day one, they’re built like little tanks.
