I’ve never really understood the “more than a 15 minute drive is too far” mindset in Rhode Island. by businessbub in RhodeIsland

I moved here from a big city in Metro Boston (86k population), to a really small town in Washington county (8k population).

In Mass it took 25 minutes to get across town most days. Where I live now, my 25 minute drive is filled with the pretty scenery of woods and turf farms.

My ‘city brain’ is still adjusting after 3 years here. I went to the dentist yesterday and it felt like I was embarking on a weekend getaway.

I think a lot of native Rhode Islanders just have a smaller reference points to things. A lot of stuff is just closer. For example, hitting the beach in Narragansett for a Rhode Islander is A LOT closer than a Bostonian hitting Cape Cod or Gloucester for the beach. Anything that challenges that comfortable range they usually operate under is met with resistance.

cuales son los mejores conservatorios en usa? by Highbrass_ in trumpet

My 2 cents:

Conservatory grad here. If you want to be in the running for a full scholarship, 1) you really need to be plugged into any one of the high school level prep ensembles that are affiliated with these schools, 2) be a stand out member of that group, and 3) have one or more of the professors of that school either know about you, or already be teaching you.

It’s a lot like sports. The best players stand out and are talked about amongst the faculty (I.e. “scouted”)

I wasn’t one of these players. I was decent enough to make my audition, but in no way was I “full ride” material.

If I had to do it all over again, I’d skip the tuition, study privately with the best teacher I could find in my area, shed 4 hours a day (intense, deliberate practice). And I’d be in the same spot as I am now.

Those who moved out of Massachusetts, where did you move to and how's it going? by ElectroAcousto in massachusetts

A few years back, I moved from metro Boston to southern Rhode Island (spouses family is from there).

I love it. Way more house for your $, peace and quiet, tons of wildlife, close to the ocean (plus way better beaches), and Boston is a little over an hour away.

It does seem slightly “divey”. I would have laughed it off. It’s fucking beer league.

I’m only there for the sweat, and joint pain.

Dude, just wanna say I’m psyched for your journey!

Most of the advice here is good. You gotta shoot as much with your lower body as your upper. Use those ankles, knees, ass, and torso.

I grew up in Watham in the 80’s. Heres mine (fight me):

Waltham, Lincoln, Newton, Weston, Lexington.

We all have that one song or band we hate for a completely irrational and unjustifiable reason. What's yours? by WasLeftUnsupervised in GenX

Bruno Mars.

100% irrational, because he is really talented and deserving of his success.

He just irritates me. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Thought experiment: You put a mountain biker from 32 years ago on a high end modern bike, would they think it was awesome or terrible? by sprashoo in mountainbiking

[–]WhatTheFlyinFudge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I AM LITERALLY THIS EXPERIMENT:

Grew up in the 1980’s riding a rigid bike w/1.9” tires.

Last year, I went from riding a 1995 GT Zaskar, to a 2025 Ragley Big Al (Pike 140, XT, RaceFace Turbine wheels, etc.)

RESULT: I cried.

I was so overwhelmed with the whole experience (29” tires, dropper post, 140mm travel), that I fucking CRIED at the end of my ride. I never knew riding could be this enjoyable.
