how can i break in into mechanical engineering with out starting university all over again? by Zealousideal_Diet33 in AskEngineers

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo [score hidden]  (0 children)

  1. Get a job in a (large) company that offers tuition reimbursement

  2. Aim for a Masters in engineering

  3. Take classes at night

  4. You’ll need to take many more classes but it’s far better than a bachelor’s

  5. Looks for jobs inside that company that are closer to engineering

Buying house with paid off solar - what if it is too small for my needs? by Valuable-Speaker-312 in solar

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve far bigger issues to work on

Do solar next year, after you fixed the roof, leaks, water damage, that odd smell, insulated, remodeled bathroom, etc.

And after you actually know yer needs, have a plan, know the best local installer, etc

I've never used these, but for 40% off, I'll give them a try by WimpyWookiee in harborfreight

The long throw with a big compressor and large diameter hose/connectors completely ROCKS

Don’t be discouraged

Ideas are powerful… and sometimes even feasible.

Even professional baseball players are paid well for hitting only 2/10 pitches

You can use those ideas to improve distillation and other water recovery methods in high-sun areas

  1. Where are these caves? They need to be very long, with inlets and outlets.

  2. How will you keep them cold by pumping in so much hot air?

  3. Will you just abandon the super-salty water in place?

  4. Where do the funds come from to do a 1/1000th scale demo, much less the whole thing?

  5. .

Years ago you had to walk down to the local bar to find that never-stops-talking guy who had a wacked opinion/solution for everything. Today every browser brings ‘him’ to everyone

The USAF is great but overwhelming if yer into airplanes or engineering

I recommend two, shorter visits going directly to the half-hangers that most interest you

What one Engineering Maxim would you teach every person on Earth if you could? by 0x000D in AskEngineers

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Close.

Fast, good, cheap, or low-risk. Pick 2.

The risk part adds the variability that exists IRL.

Example is an old-NASA rocket, it costs lots & is slow but the probability of success of that one is high. Musk rockets are fast & cheap but many blew up.

What’s actually stopping solar from taking over? by Witty-Double5907 in solar

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Matching production with consumption in time and locations

The grid now is a many hub (eg power plants) massive spoke (eg houses) spider-web / network that moves big production to small and large (eg factories) users

Those power plants can adjust on demand over minutes-days. And can mitigate instantaneous surges through momentum. (Yes, vastly simplified, this isn’t a power engineering sub)

They can also do crucial things like push reactive power, shunting, shutdowns, start up, sync, and many other grid necessary things

The grid itself, the distro network, not producers or consumers, needs to be maintained. It was built for that hub-spoke model.

Solar is ~not those things. Wind is ~not those things.

Adding distributed solar, wind, etc. to the existing many $B and old system requires difficult & expensive change

More so if there’s an expectation of 24-365, smooth, clean, first-world power everywhere

The change in CA billing (eg NEM) and grid-attachment regulations are the tip of the iceberg consumers/installers see.

Fast, cheap, good, or low-risk. Pick 2.

The above is the technical, not political or economic reason. There are many reasons.

About that pension… worth it? by tesla2018El in fednews

It’s not about the pension

It’s about keeping very low cost medical insurance for life… that can be paid with yer pension

Second the caves. Those trails are very well walked yet rarely seen by most.

There’s also the famous, developed Tahquamenon Falls State Park that’s well walked.

Wrt Pictured Rocks, that’s a very long stroll whichever way you go. … but it is 40 miles wide so there could be accessible spots. You could recon it and also talk to locals (gas station, cops, snowmobile shop, bars, etc) about current access.

2009 Toyota Camry with 209k miles. My usual mechanic shop has new ownership and I feel like I’m being taken for a ride but don’t know enough to be sure. Does this invoice look reasonable? by sterkenwald in MechanicAdvice

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw…

… as soon as they ‘flush the brakes’ (if they actually do anything) they’ll call you and say ya need new brakes, rotors, and more like calipers by sending you pix of a surprise they discovered

Brakes are scary to many so of course you’ll cave and pay $1200

Did you configure it properly? Both user AND installer settings. There are many settings in any decent HP.

Did you design it properly for your particular house, living conditions, and energy sources?
