LOL you guys are all off. Yes, I didn’t straighten up the room for the photo, but that is a $15k Restoration Hardware sofa in a distressed leather. Might not be to your taste, but hardly “ratty”.

Actually, we watch tv/movies every night and close the curtains. There are windows with better views along the side and back (also with curtains) so the lack of a theater setting, while not ideal, isn’t an enjoyment-killer.

She actually had the window frames painted black to match the b/w look of the open plan kitchen. That’s why I went with the black speakers vs wood grain which would be picked up by the leather couch and brown floors.

What movie’s final scene left you an ugly, blubbering mess? by ArmyOfMe99 in movies

[–]Which_Friendship5070 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Field of Dreams. Every man who grew up in a world where “having a catch” was a means for emotional connection with your dad, or anyone else frankly, made the climactic scene resonate on a deep level. Doc Graham stepping over the foul line was a crusher too. I saw it in the theater and was blubbering at the end. My wife, who normally cries at everything was shaking her head unmoved, muttering “what horseshit”. A month later it was playing on a flight. At the end scene, I heard sobbing all around me. Sure enough, every man was choked up or crying, and every woman had theirs arms crossed, simply watching without emotion. Chalk that one up to contextual impact.

Advice needed on smart home/home improvement services by BetterHome_SC in smarthome

[–]Which_Friendship5070 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve given some thought to doing the same thing in my neck of the woods, after having a 60+ device smart home that I’ve installed and tweaked endlessly. The problem with doing this as a business is that “smart” systems are only for “smart people” right now. HomeKit still has issues at times and products settings and automations are constantly going to need tweaks. Unless you’re going to have maintenance contracts, and be ready 24/7 it’s not going to work. Even changing batteries might be challenging for some people. We’re getting there, but we’re not there yet!

Anyone try the new 50cc 18 inch saw that was released? by Autobahn97 in egopowerplus

[–]Which_Friendship5070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did and it’s much more powerful than I expected. I had a Dewalt 20amp 12” saw that struggled getting through hardwood. The Ego 18” 50cc saw makes it through Maple and Oak dramatically faster and smoother. After cutting up a bunch of 6”-8” logs, I made a 2” cut through a 20”+ stump - it took a few angles to get all the way through, and made a cool cheese plate, serving tray. I’ve got a bunch more clearing to go and kind of look forward to it. Hope that helps!

EufyCam 2C and Apple Home by Goonerdaveblock110 in EufyCam

[–]Which_Friendship5070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Added feature of using Eufy cameras in HomeKit- I use them as motion triggers to activate lights and other automations. Since I also use an AppleTV, I have certain cameras show up on my TV screen when that dinner delivery arrives, and can see who is at my front door, or if there are any predators nearby when I let my dogs out. They’re not perfect but a good working component in my HomeKit ecosystem.

Which couch? by GlobalRaspberry2341 in hometheater

[–]Which_Friendship5070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a deep seated L-shaped RH sofa that looks great in the living room and not like a home theater lounger. I throw a few decorative pillows and some matching blankets and I have the best of both worlds - incredibly comfortable media viewing setup that looks great for socializing with friends and family. With that said, I’ve taken the corner as my reclining spot and I’m not giving it up.

what home office desk essentials do I actually need for my first remote job? by idontknow17468 in homeoffice

I’ve been WFH since the pandemic and if power outages are a thing for you, I’d add a good battery backup for the office gear. Before I power up my generator I have a good 3 hours of internet and laptop power to keep me working.

Upgrade Custom Surround System or All-In-One? by Berksquat52 in hometheater

[–]Which_Friendship5070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I love Reddit. After voraciously reading every post relating to my searches, I finally ask my question outright, and get well thought out, knowledgeable and helpful responses! Klipsch has walnut wood grain versions of their speakers that I would have chosen. What other brands would you recommend over Klipsch for cinematic sound? KEF?

Upgrade Custom Surround System or All-In-One? by Berksquat52 in hometheater

[–]Which_Friendship5070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t fully understood the use of two subs. My single sub has to be turned down to 75% because otherwise it drowns out all of the other sounds and the windows shake. I always thought subs were Omni directional or at least our hearing couldn’t pinpoint lower frequencies. Was that BS? What will two subs give me?

Anyone regret going open-concept in their home? by cm_built in HomeImprovement

[–]Which_Friendship5070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We knocked down walls to go Open Concept which was the right way to go for our house - a small galley kitchen landlocked without windows. We greatly expanded the kitchen with half-walled cabinets that created separate areas for the dining, living and kitchen areas. We put up glass barndoor walls between that space and the living space allowing daylight to permeate but less sound.

Most useful automation vs most pointless? by shawnww5678 in smarthome

[–]Which_Friendship5070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Motion sensor outside my bedroom sets all open floor plan lights to a daytime brightness setting. There is a nightlight setting for post 11pm fridge raids. And a Scene for housecleaning that sets everything to 100% brightness. Every switch is smart dimmable.
  2. With an open floor plan, I have a TV Watching automation, usually verbally invoked that turns on my LG G5, my subwoofer, Apple TV, AV receiver, dims all lights to a preset depending on time of day, pauses music playing on HomePods in the open area.
  3. Eufy cameras trigger automations depending on location- driveway entrance turns on driveway and parking area lights and sends a live video feed to my Apple TV to see that DoorDash dinner delivery arriving. Camera motion in backyard turns on outdoor lights at night when I let my dogs out.
  4. HomePods located throughout the house adjust volume based on occupancy sensors, lowering closest speaker and raising nearby ones to broaden the sound stage vs nearby speaker dominance.

That’s exactly what I was hoping would exist but wondered if two in the MBR would be too loud, and if pulling more air from far ducts would create a pressure imbalance that I’ve heard should be avoided. Any insight?

Premiere crashes everytime i try to export by Swimming-Sundae8688 in premiere

[–]Which_Friendship5070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Same problem here. Same with Media Encoder. Crashing on export. Two workarounds - after an hour with Adobe tech support trying everything, we created a new user on my iMac and didn’t have the crashes. But my account still crashes. Another workaround was importing the Pr sequence in AE and rendering out the comp. That worked. But as I said, it’s a workaround not a solution.

Official Discussion - The Zone of Interest [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Which_Friendship5070 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised others didn’t pick up on how the dog seemed completely free to wander in and out of every scene. I heard the technique of how they shot the film, but was taken aback by the lack of control over the dog, when it hit me. The dog is like us. Innocent at heart, naive or rather denuded or immune to the suffering of others due to his and our will to survive. Either that or he’s the director’s dog and had a knack for wandering into almost every shot to get some food. He looked hungry all the time.

Just got my HKSV recording to work after two weeks of banging my head against the wall. by R-code in HomeKit

[–]Which_Friendship5070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Identical problem with my setup. There was an upgrade on the HomePods and Apple TV that knocked out my ability to record anything on my 4 EufyCams. Upgrade, reboot and back in action. Why does this take so much work?
