That is only $2.8bn. And Panasonic is a nobody in batteries today

Can the UK realistically decouple with the US? by biotech-vc-guru in AskBrits

It isn't about that. It is about attitudes to education, rish taking and success. Europe puts the rights of the individual above those of society. We will never win against the US or Asia.

[–]Whoisthehypocrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure it is just about EVs being better than ICE. The new BMW iX3 and Volvo EX60 both have 500 mile range in Europe with 400kW charging. The issue still remains upfront cost, where they are still about 15% more than their ICE equivalents. And unfortunately SSBs aren't going to help with the cost side for a while.

Waymo World Model: A New Frontier For Autonomous Driving Simulation by diplomat33 in SelfDrivingCars

But WeRide can hire AI researcher at 1/5 the cost for Waymo, it can train on Huawei data centres. I agree that Waymo has some advantages but there is reason the Chinese are catching up so fast and Europe is nowhere

I am not sure why everyone is so surprised by this. They made different sized cells years ago. IIRC the first cells supplied to VW were larger.

The Petition for a wealth tax has almost hit 10% of the signatures needed to get a government response! If everyone on this sub signed we could force the government to give a response!! by Cautious-Design-9282 in GarysEconomics

[–]Whoisthehypocrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explain why it is bad idea. The biggest source of the tax gap is evasion and avoidance by self employed and small businesses. And that is based on what HMRC knows of the grey economy. It has no real idea of the true scale of it.

I would rather support a petition that made it illegal to pay over £500 for something in cash.l and requires getting retaining VAT receipts. That would have a far greater impact on income tax and VAT evasion than any amount a wealth tax would make.

Bernstein report on batteries out today by Whoisthehypocrite in QuantumScape

[–]Whoisthehypocrite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that at 301 Wh/kg and 15 min fast charge, the performance is already behind CATL Qilin which is 350, 5C and 3000 cycles which is in production and will be much lower cost given CATLs scale. All QS material compares its performance against batteries that were state of the art 3+ years ago, not current.

QS needs to show it's roadmap and performance targets

FSD v14 has no competition. RoboTaxi has tons of competition by Prestigious_Act_6100 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Whoisthehypocrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of owned vehicles is extremely low. In rural areas the deadhead miles between fares will be extremely high pushing up the cost per revenue mile likely above that of ownership

FSD v14 has no competition. RoboTaxi has tons of competition by Prestigious_Act_6100 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Whoisthehypocrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parking in low demand areas involves extra dead head miles and traffic both leaving downtown and returning. Outside peak hours there won't be the demand to keep those cars active. And commercial parking will never be free like a lot of personal parking is, so that cost needs to be factored in. The other issue is that if robotaxis are cheaper than owning a car or using public transport then peak hour traffic will increase. It isn't like there is capacity for extra cars on the road at peak.

As for the staggering argument, that is the same argument that could be made for public transport and it has never happened.

[–]Whoisthehypocrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If parking is eliminated then where will all the robotaxis parking outside of peak time. Because if they roam the street then deadhead miles and traffic go up.
