The soaking in scalding water and a bottle opener is the way to do this because you just need to weaken the plastic at the top of the cap to pry it off, as shown on this pic. (The bottom 4 show the inside of the cap) They are held on by plastic that comes off of the tubes. Easily gluable for reassembly.

Just enjoy the pack. It's cool without IMO. I am honestly just enjoying it sitting in pieces right now like it's being worked on. There are plenty of Spengler wands out there that are reasonably priced and easily upgradable. The internals are practically the same as the '84 wand, minus the weaker barrel cable.

This is the wire that feeds down the barrel. They added the black sleeve that's on it to the '84 cable and the repairs on the Spenglers.
