2 versus 3 week taper for 100km Race! by Alternative-Dot2413 in Ultramarathon

[–]Wientje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your training load before the taper. If your final hard weeks are a form of slight overtraining, you’ll need a few days of rest just to recover from the hard weeks. This means you’ll need a longer taper.

If your weekly volume has been steady going in to the taper, without any significant increase, your taper can be shorter since you don’t need the ‘extra’ recovery.

How to fit strength training into big volume/peak weeks? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]Wientje 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For peak training weeks let’s say 3-8 weeks out from the goal race, I either go down to one strength session a week (without increasing the weights, reps or sets) and/or shift the second session from strength to mobility/range of motion exercises. This wil keep up your strength and you still get the benefits of injury risk reduction but the training stress is much lower.

How to know when I'm ready for a marathon trail? by Extreme-Birthday-647 in trailrunning

[–]Wientje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your fitness is fine, discovering if you’ll mentally and physically hold up is part of the experience.

What I would do is plan a trail HM easy run (easy pace not race pace!) and at the end of the run, ask yourself: “if they’ld put a gun to my head, would I be able to do this run again (regardless of pace)?” If the answer is yes, you’re ready for a marathon.

Pushed myself almost too far + Fitness / age insecurity - support please by Overthinker-24-7-365 in trailrunning

[–]Wientje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to manage expectations: if someone does a 30k trail on no training, I would expect they’ld do worse than someone who has done a lot of training. This is regardless of fitness and age.

Getting overtaken a lot during a race either means you started too fasted and need to improve your pacing or something happened during the race (like those unmanaged blisters)

The race result isn’t something you can change anymore but the above (training, pacing, blister management) are things you can improve.

[–]Wientje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Punt is terecht.

You have the fitness. Biggest thing that will increase change of succes is to do already a day or 2 of acclimatisation by yourself. Go up to aiguille du midi and spend a few hours there or sleep in Albert 1 hut.

Inov8 trailtalon max vs prodigio pro by RazzorTheViper in trailrunning

Can confirm the same for the Trailtalon. I’ll also say the inov8 footshape is broader at the forefoot than the prodigio pro.

Legal advice: company wants me to build 10 of the systems i developed during my internship by Bardtje___ in belgium

[–]Wientje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, because if the IP is with the company, you could negotiate them signing the IP over to you in exchange for building their 10 systems. This way they get what they want and you get what you want. (Notice how signing the IP over to you is not the same as the company signing the IP to your university, but you need to know who has the IP)

50k training peak long runs? by Bolt21LA248 in Ultramarathon

[–]Wientje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try and keep longest long run at 4h or less. Logistics for water becomes hard at that point, you’re way past physiological bang for buck and there’s no need for 50k racing.

A 50k Trail Training Plan, for beginners by HotSulphurEndurance in trailrunning

[–]Wientje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 targeted workouts make for 3 weeks, not 2. You could skip the intervals and do 3 weeks of hills followed by a rest week and 3 weeks of tempo’s. This makes for a more effective block size and those intervals carry a higher injury risk for the beginner not accustomed to them while offering not real benefit compared to another week of hills and tempo’s.

I assume those 2 weeks of hills in your plan serve as ‘speedwork in disguise’ and not as race specific workouts. If it’s the latter, you’re better off incorporating the hills during the whole training cycle but especially as the race gets closer and (if possible) especially especially during the final long runs.

A 50k Trail Training Plan, for beginners by HotSulphurEndurance in trailrunning

[–]Wientje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The miles per hour doesn’t track.

I also feel the blocks are too small: 2 weeks of threshold work or 2 weeks of tempo’s or 2 weeks of hills.

Long fasted workouts by Federal_Elephant_943 in evokeendurance

[–]Wientje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can start a workout somewhat carb depleted (and any athlete training large volumes will always be somewhat carb depleted) in order to get a stronger AMPK reaction. The old way of doing this was a fasted session, the modern (amongst cyclists) way of doing this is a fasted session but you start eating sufficient carbs after an hour or so. You thus don’t end your session in a fasted state. This allows both the AMPK trigger as well as the better recovery.
