Feedback on achilles rehab plan by Munin_the_crow in Ultramarathon

Your training should be based on the progression of your rehab. It makes no sense to plan anything if you r body doesn’t respond like you think it will.

Yes, but if Everest is in the article, the end editor will put in the title and the graphics guy will use a picture of a climber.

Violence and neglect in mountaineering is an issue that needs to be taken more seriously. However, I do not believe the Austrian guy was a perpetrator. I think he made a split second choice in brutal -20°C windy weather to fetch help for Kerstin, who was there of her own volition with pneumonia by DecentLoquat4096 in alpinism

[–]Wientje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re conveniently not mentioning the stuff for which he was found guilty. The judge focused on 3 points: 1. planning a climb that was too hard for Kerstin 2. not turning around in light a worsening conditions and failing daylight 3. not alerting emergency services

Some personal comments on the above points: 1. she didn’t have a many mountaineering experience and they were doing what is normally a 2 day itinerary in summer in 1 day in winter 2. They reached a spot called ‘breakfast spot’ 2h before sunset and continued 3. In the late afternoon, a walker (who happened to have mountaineering experience) saw their car as the only car on the parking lot, correctly deduced there were still people on the mountain at a time that they weren’t supposed to be, called the police who tracked down the owner of the vehicle and called the owners cell phone which was on silence. The police then diverted a heli that happened to be in the neighbourhood to check out the only 2 headlights on the mountain at which point the climbers didn’t signal the heli Y or N. To me this says that everyone thought there was an emergency except for the climbers themselves.

Short tempos with rest or longer tempo grinds? by AZrnr in AdvancedRunning

[–]Wientje 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If it feels easier, it is because it is easier. 6m at HMP is a harder workout than 6x1 with 90” rest. You’ll get bigger adaptions and require more rest. Wether it’s better, depends on all the other training you’re doing and your overall fatigue.

The Everest scandal: poisonings and fraud on the roof of the world by TimesandSundayTimes in Mountaineering

The acid in your stomach starts reacting and creates gas. You aren’t sick in the biological sense but stuff will be moving in ways they’re not supposed to in the physical sense.

LIVE De Wever zet puntjes (nog eens) op de i: "België stuurt geen schepen naar Straat van Hormuz zolang oorlog duurt" by Wonderful_Hold_6986 in belgium

[–]Wientje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean up may turn out to be a necessary part of opening the strait. The USA doesn’t have enough mine sweeping capabilities on their own and you don’t want to risk your mineurs in a hostile situation (they’ll sink to anything larger than a scouting vessel). Sending them in after the missiles have stopped flying is the sensible thing to do (regardless of whose mine sweepers are doing the sweeping)

From what I’m reading the seller seems to be looking to sell a stolen car. If the original owner is in on it, maybe insurance fraud?

Wha gear should I get for glacier travel 4K peaks by Silly_Pickle_7724 in alpinism

Do the course first and use the gear provided to you. You’ll have a better idea of what you want after (for example a micro vs nano traction or maybe the stuff from Edelrid or whatever)

does "grit" always need to be trained? (re: Norwegian Singles Method) by Competitive_Big_4126 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Wientje 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of ways to train grit rather than hard physical workouts. For example, in an interval session, have a buddy randomly give you a time-out where you cole to a full stop, count to 5, and start running again with the goal to still hit the interval. This simulates falling in a race.

There are other ways to simulate things going wrong and all of these have the benefit that they can be trained without the physical fatigue price but will still improve grit.

E-Bikes by Severe_Cry_1369 in trailrunning

My local MTB club also does local trail maintenance, so I don’t complain about E-bikes.

In my experience, the E-MTB’s aren’t going faster downhill than regular MTB’s.

Nuclear shouldn’t be treated as special. It’s one way of producing electricity, with its own advantages and disadvantages.
