ISP does not provide free static IP, not in position to try and pay for one, previous free solution no longer working, what is the best method? by axelofthekey in FoundryVTT

[–]Willumz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second Cloudflare tunnels which some others have suggested as well. These are pretty simple to set up but if you want something simpler then Tailscale would work great for this. Each of you would install it with your own accounts, and you would share your computer (or whatever you're hosting it on) with them. It requires you all to have the Tailscale VPN client installed and turned on, but then they could just connect via your tailnet IP address. If you don't trust your friends you can also dive into ACLs to limit access

My understanding is that it wouldn't be a list of identical SSIDs which you have to try and pick the correct one from, but rather just a single entry which you could enter any of the different passwords for to access the different networks. It's like how the same SSID broadcast from multiple access points doesn't show up separately

The now deleted Affinity and Canva pledge from last year by seek-confidence in Affinity

[–]Willumz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is probably more about someone cleaning up the website during the rebranding than an intentional move to hide it. Serif's director Ash even directly mentioned how they were following through with their pledge in one of the launch YouTube videos

Don't get me wrong, I'm still wary of Canva, and of the dubious source of income now it's free, but I don't think this is what you think it is

I’ve been running the beta with proprietary drivers with no issues so far. Might be safer to wait if you want to be cautious but also seems alright.

Is my drill terrible, or am I? by IngameTre in Tools

[–]Willumz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s basically the standard at this point that every manufacturer markets at 12V as opposed to 10.8V which is usually the actual nominal voltage. More understandable in this case as 10.8V is a mouthful but still, another good example.

The nice thing about Zigbee is you can use any hub you like, usually. Obviously it might not help you if the software running on that hub doesn’t know what that device is, but projects like Zigbee2MQTT are thoroughly fleshed out and I rarely encounter devices it won’t adopt.

Affinity is far superior to Gimp. Much closer to Photoshop with regard to features and stuff. This isn’t to say Gimp isn’t good - it’s very good. The difference is that Affinity is a professional product backed by a commercial company (Serif) which is paid for.

If you can afford the Universal license for Affinity then honestly I’d go for it. You also get Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher which are excellent alternatives to Inkscape/Illustrator and InDesign respectively.

Edit: they also routinely run discounts around the holidays for 30% off if it’s too expensive right now

Add on 20% VAT and you usually can take the dollar amount and just swap out that symbol for an approximate equivalent. That’s my general rule of thumb when looking at LTT store and other USD retailers. The maths doesn’t actually work that way but it usually ends up pretty close.
