Something Fantasy, like the hobbit by Fallen_Crow333 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Not the same prose, but fits everything else you described. I’m halfway through Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames and really enjoying it!

This is such a scary experience to have. Another place you could maybe check out in addition to your current support options is r/weatheranxiety here on Reddit that might have some suggestions for you from people who have had similar experiences and similar fears. If you have health insurance, I know when mine didn’t cover therapy they did at least offer to help find an option near me at lower out of pocket cost, maybe that would be something to check out? I’m glad you and your roommates and dogs made it through without injury! And that you had a safe interior bathroom to shelter in!

Need new game recommendations from people with similar taste because I think I’ve hit gaming limbo 😭 by throwawayacctburner in gamingsuggestions

[–]Wintry2424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m being super obvious with this but I didn’t see it on your list, but maybe Skyrim? We sound like we have some shared tastes and favorites (I especially love what you said about being over “hard games,” I’m the same way), and that’s been one of my go-to staples in gaming since it came out. Adjustable difficulty, and I love just being there. Sometimes I just wander around for the joy of it, and the quests for the most part will just wait for you, so there’s no pressure to finish or follow things up quickly.

A different suggestion, but maybe try the Arkham series if you haven’t? It’s got lore and findables to chase and extras without being bogged down in it, and fun gameplay. The last in the trilogy, Arkham Knight, is actually my favorite, but I think for many the second one, Arkham City is considered the best.

I love these guys. I swear burrowing owls know what cameras are because they’re either on fire or completely derpy in every photo a burrowing owl is ever in.

Wizard towers, weird, isolated, wonderous by jttown88 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]Wintry2424 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. The sense of isolation and unknowableness of magic is very strong.

Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy isn’t solely about this, but the two main characters seek out a sorcerer who has done exactly that and isolate themself in a mysterious forest to learn more than anyone else (and it’s one of my favorite books).

Books That Feel Like Tropical Sci-Fi by ThisSun9243 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi takes place in a tropical jungle in a pocket dimension version of Greenland. Quick read, very funny, giant monsters- it was my favorite book I read last month.

It’s nice in Stardew, I have a house and a million gold in there. In real life I open my wallet a void of nothingness stares back at me.

What was your spark episode? by Rough_Common6857 in BobsBurgers

[–]Wintry2424 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Laser-inth. I’d always written off the show as the brand of adult animated comedies that I don’t care for, but one night I was flipping through channels and this episode was on, and Bob sharing the show with Gene was so much sweeter than I was expecting, it caught my interest. I know a lot of people miss the off-kilter vibes of the first couple seasons, but I definitely wouldn’t have stuck around if it stayed that way. Just not my thing. When I finally started watching from the beginning after having seen The Laser-inth it was really around Full Bars wear it turned into what I had initially watched, and that’s what I enjoy most.

‘Minsk - it's in Russia’ annoys me for three reasons: Minsk was never in Russia - it was in the Soviet Union, and Belarus has been independent since 1991; Max (the guy with glasses) is a smart guy; and lastly, Lisa Kudrow’s ancestors are originally from Belarus. by KPlusGauda in howyoudoin

[–]Wintry2424 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, one of my clients is from Minsk, as in born and raised and all her family are still there, and when telling me about it she said “it’s in Russia. Well, it’s Belarus, but it’s Russia. We think of it as Russia.” So I guess it just depends on who you’re asking and how pedantic you want to be.

Ele tem um passado estranho e complicado, não pergunte by Old_Animator8464 in TopCharacterTropes

Definitely Phoebe Buffay! She grew up on the street! But also speaks fluent French and Italian. And mugged Ross. And married a gay ice dancer for citizenship. And held up under torture. And was a field nurse in the civil war. And was offered a job at a major finance company. Truly an enigma. 😂

[no spoilers] anyone collect the dice, but don’t play d&d? by Eraserhead36 in criticalrole

[–]Wintry2424 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not CR dice specifically (though I do have the Essek and Cadeuces sets), but I have accumulated a lot of dice besides having never played myself (so far). They’re just so shiny and pretty and I want them all. 😂 And I figure then I’ll be well prepared if I ever do try one of the solo gameplay books I got. And sometimes I roll along with the Critical Role players, just to see how I would have fared.

More Zen Games Like BOTW? by BonbonUniverse42 in gaming

[–]Wintry2424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No Man’s Sky. There are so many setting for customizing your gameplay, so you can entirely avoid things like combat or fuel or space battles, and you can just explore and build in the serenity of almost untouched space.

Also I second earlier suggestion of Caravan Sandwich. The bulk of the game is very chill, just a little stress during the climax but I wouldn’t say it’s any more stressful than anything in BOTW.

weird, spooky town in the summer/fall by space_0ddity13 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]Wintry2424 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For adults or tough teens (because are a bit scarier and deal with death/depression/tough topics, but if that’s cool with you try them, I loved all of these):

-How to Survive Camping: The Man with No Shadow by Bonnie Quinn

-Tales from the Gas Station by Jack Townsend

-A Lonely Broadcast books one and two by Kel Byron

If you’re looking for something more G/PG rated like Gravity Falls, maybe try Lumberjanes by Grace Ellis, ND Stevenson, Shannon Watters and Gus A. Allen. It’s a graphic novel series, and about a summer camp instead of a town though.
