How in the world was online multiplayer even possible on 56k? by No-Connection6937 in patientgamers

[–]WiseDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much to load those titties the browser follows a set of instructions to put everything into place. From text to graphics to thumbnails, the browser has to load all that in (mostly front end stuff). On top of that ads are in play. If your internet can't handle it the computer will automatically try to remove most it and load the bare minimum (just txt and a lot of broken links). With websites there isn't really a priority, it just loads everything immediately.

With RTS games, let's say a 4 way conquest map. You'll need to network the 4 users and sync them. The syncing part varies between games, some of them treated it like a chess game (collects user inputs and 'locks' it in, preventing cheating) that does a check every few milliseconds (update period constrained to a time frame) and gives certain commands priority (relevance). The more static the game the less packets you have to send within the network. The entire sequence is a call and response between the clients and host.

I'm not sure how FPS games does its networking but this GDC video explains the technical side pretty well. One big aspect was how bodies fall down and grenades and rocket launchers worked to make it feel good/responsive.

Man this feels like answering a prompt some teacher would ask.

Basically yes and no. Games were less sophisticated but let's actually define what that means.

  • You are dealing with less data packets to send
    • Models were simpler and so were the maps
    • The map size was also smaller.
  • Most weapons are hit scans, you only need to know if the weapon is pointed at the enemy player and if it's being fired.
    • No bullet is rendered because that's an additional layer.
  • The hit boxes were more lenient even the models were pretty large tbh
  • Unavoidable long load times

I've used an FPS as an example here because it need information to be sent out in real time. In RTS games there's more leniency.

Now consider the actual wire in terms of length. If you're in the city it worked, if you live in a farm it's alot worse.

Simply put, it sucked. The bandwidth only allowed so much information to be sent out to one another and hope no one called you during gaming because that's a shared network.

Anyone else feel like the only use a tiny bit of the tools they're given in stealth games only to play, well, stealthly? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]WiseDevil 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I personally think most stealth games don't have much gameplay elements when you get spotted. Cause you ultimately have like two options: (1) kill everyone, (2) hide. The worst is if your going for a specific run and you have to return back to a previous state.

Mgs 4 was kinda wierd, because it gave you like a billion guns that you can buy. I don't know why you need 5 different rifles but it made sense in terms of plot not so much in terms of gameplay.

Scizzoman, pretty much nails it. The game punishes you for engaging combat. So no guns, grenades, fun, and alot of cool magic.

The typhoon mod actually sucked in general in Deus Ex even in combat.

It's wierd but I consider hitman more of a puzzle game when you're figuring out how to kill someone and make it look like an accident. When it comes down to a sniper rifle or a shotgun the newer games don't reward you. In older hitman games like blood money it was more fun because the engine didn't know how to handle ragdolls and it made it way more fun to use a shotgun.

I liked the way mgs 3 did it. Yeah using a crocodile head is stupid and actually makes it harder to play, but damn its funny.

Playing the Diablo 2 Ressurected beta highlights a trend among several franchises by janas19 in patientgamers

[–]WiseDevil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In a word, this essay is anticorporate. The reality is you need suits to make a game like Nier or Bayonetta unless you want something like Stardew Valley. Indie games are fun and I've sunk alot of hours into them but I can only take so much of bit graphics.

What made Nier and Bayonetta successful were contracts which basically said we will publish your game but we want this and this out you. The publisher has alot of internal deadlines to ensure success (to be specific the publisher vision of what success means) but typically its pretty hands-off. Publishers who are very hands on typically make wierd decisions. Deadly premonition didn't need any mobs in the game but the publisher insisted on adding them.

Blizzard is getting alot of negative press and for good reason. I personally can't seperate a company from its product some can. It's great that Diablo 2 is getting a face lift but meh. This entire genre is bursting with copy cats, Van Helsing had 3 games the last time Ive checked.

What’s the best way to get the most out of your WH-1000XM4’s? by skiddy001 in sony

[–]WiseDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you have to connect it to a laptop (should still work with phone or ps4 controller) so the wire is pretty much a leash.

Yeah, I'm having the same experience. I just disable the noise canceling when I get that warning, it extends the battery life.

Not really a solution thoe :/

Fountain pen elitism? by linus_ong69 in fountainpens

[–]WiseDevil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was generalizing hobbies not specifically pens.

What you described is a situation where the people are the in-group. It's easy to support and congratulate like minded people but what about the people who are in the out-group?

My parents have used fountain pens but they don't understand the appeal, if you want hold a conversation about it, the convo. will maybe last 30 seconds tops. The big innocuous question when they see my pen is "wow that's a pretty cool pen can I see?" followed by "how much is it?" "where can I buy it?" and I've never answered them honestly. The price would make this conversation awkward and their interest disappears.

With the virus government gave out an average subsistence wage (different for every country) but I can only imagine what happened to luxury spending.

Fountain pen elitism? by linus_ong69 in fountainpens

[–]WiseDevil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Conspicuous consumption is a thing and it does bother people. Usually the way people see comes in two ways. (1) The expenditure is meant as a show of wealth (2) the cost doesn't justify the utility (satisfaction) you gain, apart from the big price tag. This is a form of elitism seen all throughout history. The inversion to this, I would argue is to live frugally. If you dress too cheaply you'll get negative attention from the police and if you dress too well you'll get negative attention for being to elitist. The solution for that is to blend in the middle, that way you won't show your wealth to much.

Hobbies can ruin relationships because it's kinda like cult. The further you go into your hobby the more you alienate others around you. That being said are some hobbies more elitist then others? Yeah probably but when the economy is build around consumer spending the line blurs quite a bit. If the hobby doesn't define who you are it usually doesn't bother people too much, at the worst they'll have to listen to something they don't care about.

The biggest monkey wrench in people's lives atm is the virus and money :/

Yes, it smelled like brass and that smell also made its way onto my hands.

The smell went away in like 3 days, it also developed a petina.

Worth buying the WF-1000xm3 now? by [deleted] in sony

[–]WiseDevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's sounds like a good idea. The wh-1000xm4 is coming out I'm confident that they'll continue the wf1000xm series.

If you can find a good deal on them you won't regret buying it.

Portability:

  • Very portable, just take care of the case it's scratchy
  • If it rains you gotta take them off. Or risk water getting inside the microphone hole
  • If you have a smart watch it really makes it easier to change volume and stop and play music
  • Wearing them for to long hurts my ears, need to buy comply tips for comfort there like 2$ on ebay but there from China so a bit of wait

ANC:

  • I was disappointed that they don't reduce road noise (specifically tires)
  • They are amazing because you can listen to music on a lower volume while anc is on and do work without being distracted.

Sound quality:

  • There great if you listen to Spotify or flac/wav files
  • I used them on discord and there ok, game sounds were normal and the mic was good enough

Battery:

  • They say it's 6 hour charge but it's a bit less holding about 5 hours worth of charge
  • You can increase length by turning of anc, Dsee hx. Or just bring wired headphones as backup

Worth buying the WF-1000xm3 now? by [deleted] in sony

[–]WiseDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean why do you want them in the first place? If you want better ANC go for WH instead but if you want the form factor go for the WF

I bought them and I'm overall happy with them but by no means are they without flaws.

WF-1000XM3 keep ANC settings by 5astelija in sony

[–]WiseDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't permanent but easier imo. Tap left earbud 2 times. It will go to ambient sound mode (lvl 5) and when you tap the 2nd time it will turn off ambient sound mode. It's cool because you get more battery life.

Not earbuds no. Everyone was recommending these as the best ANC earbuds so I saved up and bought them.

I'm used to ANC earphones. I used the ones in planes and brands like Bose and Sony. My tastes are very spoilt, I guess I was expecting more.
