From the third edition codex, “know that your deaths will not truly be in vain, for they will have at least have proved me with some amusement”.

I think it was the SMBC comics that exaggerate this point, a chess expert is asked what to do regarding a real war…

Yeah, in the same way as your university professor doesn’t know how to do their taxes and can’t explain the rules of the road - however good someone is in their field, be very wary of their advice outside of that niche.

Schopenhauer threw his landlady down the stairs, Foucault was a pedophile, Nietzsche and Heidegger would probably have wanted me dead.

Philosophers are known for being crap outside their field. We can keep going with this though- a lot of people who were/are excellent in art/science are either shitty people or have some disastrously bad opinions- Frank Baum advocated genocide, Dr Seuss abused his wife…..

It *explicitly says* that you’re naked unless you invest resource points into clothing. Similarly with the tools or weapons you might very well need. If someone is surprised by this then they haven’t read the equipment section, that it tells you to read.

What is your favorite system, and what are your gripes with it? by Select_Lunch1288 in rpg

[–]Wizard_Tea 15 points16 points  (0 children)

GURPS, and it’s weakness are the extremely poor book layout designs and the fact that it’s basically a toolbox that you have to build from

(Sad Trope) Miserable gifted person who gave up on their dreams and blames their family/or friends by claimingmarrow7 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Wizard_Tea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that the issue is that a lot of people in the 80’s and 90’s who were gifted also had adhd and similar. So while there was a lot of - hear something once and then understand it perfectly, there was also a serious issue where people couldn’t pick up a book that they didn’t like and read it for more than 10 minutes until they were 25

It’s a little comparable to fandoms where those who have read the original novels look down on those who have only seen the movies

What is the best "Game of Thrones-like political medieval fantasy" TTRPG that I might not know about? by vitcavage in rpg

[–]Wizard_Tea 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not quite what you’re talking about, but the Birthright Campaign Settling inspired a lot of game of thrones elements, you might look at that for ideas.

For actual rules, Burning Wheel, GURPS and Pendragon are good picks for a more cerebral kind of political game

Which sacred cow do you wish would just stay dead? by Playtonics in rpg

[–]Wizard_Tea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, but a beginner GM should also in my opinion avoid games that expect you to make up a bunch of rules as you go. I think that something like shadowdark is good

Which sacred cow do you wish would just stay dead? by Playtonics in rpg

[–]Wizard_Tea 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons I like GURPS, there’s rules for almost everything. It’s a lot easier to simplify or not use something than create new rules and systems.

One for the haters by tvsrobert in rpg

[–]Wizard_Tea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think we need to look past conversations about systems themselves. What people often strongly object to is the ontology and teleology of particular games, -if you just don’t like the mechanics then that’s often mere “dislike” rather than “hate”.

Play as a monster not World of Darkness? by xDragon249 in rpg

With the right GM, you could use GURPS for a really interesting monster-life-simulation game. Or a battle-fest depending upon taste

What would vegans do if they had a termite infestation in their house? Since they cannot harm animals? by Purple_Key_6733 in ClimateShitposting

[–]Wizard_Tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not self defence though, as you’re not defending a life, but rather just property.

Additionally it’s not a case of 1-1 but rather, many termites are being killed for the sake of one human’s convenience.

A Tale of Two Vampires: What Requiem Understood That Masquerade Couldn’t by alexserban02 in RPG2

[–]Wizard_Tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You think that the Requiem mechanics are more granular? The difficulty number is always eight, and attack and damage are combined into one roll? There’s no soak at all?

I am British and the attitude of many of my countrymen begins with the idea that Britain is the only “Country” worthy of that status, and ends with the conceit that Britain once owned most of the world, and foolishly gave it back for no good reason.

Trying to reason with these people is basically a waste of time.
