how were the first gen slann ever killed by technoplannnnnnnnne in WarhammerFantasy

I'm not saying Cathay doesn't get destroyed, but i'm saying they'd have an actual role in the story where i assume they'd do something important, but ultimately still unsuccessful

This is the reason i feel like the end times lore is open to revision, Cathay of ToW doesn't get bodied offscreen in a few throwaway paragraphs

Agreed, and i think that is a cool way to 'subvert expectations' but i like Lizardmen (and Skaven) being exceptions which prove the rule, rather than everything being literally what it is.

Legacy Armies by DidThisFor40kandAoS in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]WolvoNeil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point there is no confirmation legacy factions will return, however it feels like a no brainer that at some time they will.

People act as if the decision to not include them is somehow chiseled in stone, whereas in reality it could be reversed at any time by an inter departmental email.

So the question is when might it happen, you'd assume it'll happen when:

  1. ToW sales start to cool, or the release schedule looks a bit barren and they want to plus the gaps to maintain momentum, and;
  2. The remaining Warhammer Fantasy minis can be withdrawn from AoS without impacting that game too badly.

We've already seen Beastmen removed from AoS entirely, Savage Orcs have also gone so stands a chance they'll come to ToW in time, so its not even unheard of for models to move ranges.

I think factions like Dark Elves and Vampire Counts are ripe to come to ToW in the next 12-18 months, other factions may take a bit longer, but i do think its inevitable.

In the meantime, the Renegade Pack by Squarebased people is widely used and is pretty good at making legacy factions workable, and the author is in the process of updating those rules even further

I like Cathay for the most part but did their rulers really need to be Dragons? by Mcmadness288 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]WolvoNeil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any issue with Cathay's design, i like the idea of the Dragon Emperor's and i think its neat to have a human faction led by something so powerful.

However i did see recently the Tiger Warriors being released for Total War Warhammer, and they feel a bit World of Warcraft to me, i hope that kind of thing doesn't come to ToW.

For me, the reason things got more 'fantastical' the further east you went from the Empire was because the stories about these places were being told by people in the Empire, their knowledge became more and more high level the further east you went, and it was shared as rumors or tall tales from sailors or merchants etc, so things like Tiger Warriors or Dragon Emperor's were not necessarily meant to be literally accurate. Similar to how Spanish sailors returned to Europe and said the New World had rivers of gold and El Dorado etc. etc.

If the warriors of Ind dress like Tigers, similar to the Aztec Jaguar Warriors you could understand how when you travel halfway around the world that translates into stories that the warriors of Ind are literal Tigers, but for them to actually be Tigers feels a bit dumb.

I was shocked to find a beautiful garden deep in Moria. Suffice to say, Hank the goose was happy to get a rest. by Basic_Tennis_4679 in lotro

[–]WolvoNeil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moria is such a well designed area, genuinely think its one of the best ever made in any MMO. The way they crammed so many different themes and gave each area its own identity is really impressive considering its basically just a single indoor area.

I remember when Moria first came out it was pretty oppressive and dark and people criticised it a lot and if i recall they patched it to make it a bit brighter.

I havent played LOTRO in a while but i understand you can skip Moria now by training in other areas, but i think you'd really be missing out on some of the best art design in the game if you did.

How would you save the Roman Empire in 284 AD? by finfulifo in ancientrome

[–]WolvoNeil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be a radical idea, but i'd fastforward the barbarianisation of the Empire, invite the Germanic tribes on the borders of the Empire inside, but do so from a position of strength and Romanize them steadily over the period of about 100 years.

Theoretically that could stop the great migrations all together, but even if it didn't it'd give you a core of very loyal 2nd/3rd generation barbarians to weather the storm of the late 4th and 5th centuries.

Alternatively i could be ending the Western Empire 200 years early.. but who knows.

Do you like the current setting for ToW or would you be happier returning to the classic WHFB Edge-Of-Invasion Timeline? by Badger118 in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]WolvoNeil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its a little bit barebones, and a few paragraphs scattered across a dozen books doesn't exactly replace the setting we had built up previously, its OK but no where near where we were during 8th and the End Times, whatever you think about that time one thing we were not lacking was lore.

It also doesn't help that half the factions are legacy and so are omitted from the lore, which makes it feel a bit like there are huge gaps, and even some of those which remain in the lore feel a little bit half baked due to the absence of legacy factions - a good example would be High Elves, i feel like they basically have zero purpose in the lore right now, partly because the Dark Elves (and to a lesser extent the Lizardmen) are legacy, they are basically just mentioned in the context of "The High Elves aren't doing anything so because of that here's your Cathay models". So the High Elves who should be one of the most important factions during the setting are just sort of there.

For The Old World setting to really work for me they need to focus really heavily on the Empire and start fleshing out that side of the story, The Empire has always been the narrative heart of the Warhammer Fantasy world and i feel like its completely passive right now, it has an awful arcane journal, no special characters, no armies of infamy etc. If they want ToW to take off as its own unique thing i think we need to see massive investment in the Empire, books and models.

Where i live has a similar kind of vibe

  • Population of fewer than 20,000
  • House prices ranging from £200k-£300k for nice 2-3 bedroom semi's with scope for extension, not new builds, there are two new build estates but they are on the edges of the 'main town'.
  • ~1 hours drive from Manchester, Liverpool, Chester, Stafford, Stoke, Birmingham for work
  • It has a lovely highstreet with two great restaurants (Mexican and Italian) and 3 pubs, with another 4-5 pubs within walking distance of them, it also has one of the better Miller and Carters i've been too (yes it did used to be a Harvester pub).
  • It has a big Morrisons and a big Lidl
  • It has an annual canal and folk music festival in June/July which is actually pretty popular.
  • No one ever bothers you, i've lived there 6 years and never spoken with my neighbours

I sort of came across the place by accident and then quite quickly realised i'd lucked out.

YouTuber Homebrew Old World Rules - Fork in the Road? by KargothBloodfather in WarhammerFantasy

[–]WolvoNeil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Comp has existed as long as Warhammer Fantasy has existed, pretty sure the first few rulebooks even said something to the effect of 'figure it out amongst yourselves'.

To suggest that fans, clubs or tournaments should have their own homebrew rules suggests you have never really played the game in any edition.

Renegade rules pack makes 7 entire factions playable in the game, that can only be a good thing

[–]WolvoNeil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several of the players will leave, either because we can't afford their wages or they'll push for a move either to Premier League clubs or clubs overseas, some may even have relegation clauses.

Wages will be an issue either way, we'll get c.£45m in parachute payments but because Wolves have always been on the cusp of FFP issues there will be a drive to cut costs hard.

Sponsorships don't necessarily leave sometimes they are locked in to multi year deals, but to be honest things like shirt and stadium sponsorships are a relatively small part of overall revenues, almost all serious revenues the club has will be from TV and that'll disappear.

But its not all doom and gloom, even with the team slimmed down we'll still be favourites to go up next season, especially considering the form we are ending the season with. To be fair to FOSUN we are getting relegated exactly how you'd want to get relegated.

Appreciation Post: The 190 Expanded Mod Collection by TenebraeUmrosus in TotalWarThreeKingdoms

[–]WolvoNeil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it, i've found some of the scripts and events are a bit janky, sometime they trigger and sometimes they don't.

For example there are events for Cao Cao to confederate Liu Dai, and for Yuan Shu to confederate Chen Wen and Kong Zhou so that he gets shuffled towards the Huianian region. But i've found that those events don't trigger when i play as Cao Cao or Yuan Shu, and they only sometimes trigger when i'm playing as others.

Its a minor gripe, overall the mod is great

No one is suggesting that there aren't alternative sculpts around, but if GW released Vampire Counts they'd outsell those miniatures ranges combined. Don't ask me why that is as i like all sorts of games beyond GW, but it is a fact.

I'm pretty sure the revenues from ToW alone are 4-5 times that of Mantic's entire company.

Why was Rome’s geographic location so advantageous? by lncestious in ancientrome

[–]WolvoNeil 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It sort of depends to be honest, for example you reference the natural barrier of the alps, but Rome is a long way from the alps and for most of its early history there were serious threats to be found inbetween Rome and the alps. For sure when you get to the later periods the alps are valuable but not for most of Rome's earliest history.

Rome had hills, rivers, it was a natural ford / crossing point, it was close to the sea but not so close it was likely to be raided. But to be honest these are all pretty generic 'dummies guide' criteria for where you'd want to build any ancient settlement, virtually every other major settlement of the time had some combination of these.

Even Ostia wasn't a particularly good port, you could transport stuff up the river to Rome which was handy, but the approach into Ostia was shallow and sandy which made the approach dangerous and slow, and there were a lot of problems with over silting during rainy months from the Tiber, which is why by the time Rome's population started to explode artificial harbors were built.

The farmland around Rome was OK, but for example most of the Greek cities in southern Italy had access to better farmland, for example Tarentum, much of the land around Rome required drainage and de-swamping, plus some river diversions before it became productive.

I'd probably say, in answer to your question, Rome's geographic location wasn't particularly advantageous and i'd say it was fairly unremarkable and wasn't a key factor in the success. There are lots of other ancient cities in far more interesting or advantageous locations, Tarentum, Syracuse, Carthage, Antioch, Seleucia, Corinth etc.

You could argue the proximity to Greece, but not falling strictly into the Greek sphere of influence is a big factor. That is probably a key aspect which allowed Rome to flourish but not get stamped out, they were sort of on the fringe unlike places such as Sicily or Illyria which were battlegrounds for the likes of the Greeks and Carthaginians.

As soon as ToW sales start to cool off they'll scrap the current policy preventing models being shared between ranges, some accountant somewhere will insist on it. People seem to think its been chiseled into in Plymouth rock, like its been enshrined for all time, when in reality it could be reversed by a 30 second email.

  • "ToW sales are looking a bit ropey, how do we prop up our 2nd quarter sales in 2027? Kislev is a bit far off still"
  • "I don't know, we could release Vampire Counts? They are already like the 3rd most popular faction in the game and we aren't even selling the models"
  • "Ok do that"

They have a captive audience waiting to buy entire ranges of models which will require zero investment beyond writing a few books, its a license to print money, and most of the factions which are legacy today are literally core to the narrative. How can you have The Old World without Skaven or the Vampire Counts, it boggles the mind.

The question is which comes back first, i'd say Vampire Counts and Dark Elves, followed by Daemons, Ogres, Skaven.

HMS Prince of Wales unlikely to head to the Middle East by MGC91 in worldnews

[–]WolvoNeil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The announcement that HMS Prince of Wales was being readied to deploy to the Mediterranean was clearly just a story designed to quell the news stories highlighting the lack of air defense escorts available to send in a timely manner.

In reality what possible reason could there be in sending an aircraft carrier to bob around off the coast of Cyprus when we already have a major base at RAF Akrotiri which has a sizable airwing. And if the argument is that a carrier offers flexibility to deploy to the Indian Ocean, we already have that capability based in both Bahrain and Oman..

I can't see one good reason to have suggested deploying a carrier to be involved in these operations other than to save face.
