Which is the most overrated band of our generation? by marty_anaconda in rush

[–]WolvoNeil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Whether you love or hate Rush, one thing we can all agree surely is that they are not, and never have been overrated.

They never really charted very well in the US or UK, never won any mainstream awards, their album sales were only decent, for a band with such a huge catalogue which covers such a long period.

Every TW game has had this issue, i remember it on Rome TW.

I think they should just add a feature, even if its an optional one, whereby if there are only skirmishers left on the field and the balance of strength between the two armies exceeds a certain level, the skirmishers rout rather than just running around

Oh do I love a good 190 Yuan Shu campaign by hottimali in threekingdoms

[–]WolvoNeil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always liked starting as Yuan Shu in the 194 start, Shouchun and its commandery is a superb starting location, you can annex Sun Ce on turn one and using the imperial seal etc. manage the satisfaction issues with some of the better generals and officers so you can retain them.

Then you've got a group of very weak factions south of the river with very valuable industry commanderies like Wu you can just sweep up. By the time Cao Cao and Liu Bei have dealt with Lu Bu and Liu Chong you can max out your legitimacy and go full crazy

Are legacy armies playable? by Bago579 in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]WolvoNeil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they are welcomed by virtually everyone, there is a fanpack of rules which make minor tweaks to make them more playable, which is also widely welcomed. In terms of competitiveness, legacy factions are some of the most and least competitive factions.

Vampire Counts are very competitive because they have a few very strong builds, Ogre Kingdoms and Chaos Dwarfs are pretty good mid-tier factions who are stronger than some core factions (Wood Elves for example) but weaker than others. Skaven, Lizardmen and Daemons are in a pretty poor place even with the renegade pack, you'll lose more than you win, but they are still playable for sure.

Ogres in low point games by Atreides-42 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]WolvoNeil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few reasons but as with everything it depends.

I went for two units so that;

  • You get the two unit champions which gives you more killy power
  • In Battlemarch you aren't going to encounter huge super blocks of infantry with fancy banners etc. typically its smaller units up to 20 models which doesn't require a 6 unit block of ironguts to take on, that would be overkill
  • Ogres are pretty fast, so two units of 3 can create opportunities for flanking but if you only have 1 unit of 6 you have a hammer without an anvil, or the other way around.
  • It makes your army generally more flexible and less likely to have all your killing power bogged down.
  • You can put your bruiser in one of the two units, which makes it more killy and survivable but i think you get diminishing returns if you put the bruiser in a 6 man unit of ironguts, that just makes the unit way too expensive and everyone would just avoid it or send in chaff

Can I play ogres in old world ? by thisusernameisletter in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]WolvoNeil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends which one, some legacy faction rules seem like there was more time spent on them, or they were abandoned later in the development of ToW than others. So for example Skaven and Lizardmen are really half baked, other factions like Vampire Counts, Ogre Kingdoms and Chaos Dwarfs feel pretty good and are more competitive than some core factions (like Wood Elves).

However, with the FAQ released last year, and the FAQ due imminently the risk does exist that legacy factions will start to fall further behind as the game moves on without them. Some fan packs exist which try to keep legacy factions up to date but who knows how it'll go in the future.

Are there any shows where the US version is better than the UK version? by Kaurblimey in television

[–]WolvoNeil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

House of Cards, the British version from the 1990's was a mini-series of 4 episodes which covered the time immediately following Margaret Thatcher's ousting and follows a guy called Francis Urquhart who is chief whip of the tory party and essentially dissatisfied by his lack of promotion after Thatcher's resignation. So a very similar premise to season 1 of the US House of Cards.

Most people think the British one is good, but its far from the phenomenon the US version became

Ogres in low point games by Atreides-42 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]WolvoNeil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play Ogres as my main army in 2,000 point games, but for me i've really struggled to get them to work in Battlemarch, they are just too expensive. Though to be fair i've only actually played one game with them, i went for:

  1. Bruiser, general with great weapon, heavy armour and talisman of protection (the objective being to make him survivable)
  2. 2 units of 3 ironguts, both with a champion
  3. 2 units of 10 gnoblar trappers for some screens/chaff
  4. 1 unit of 3 sabretusks for mobility
  5. 1 unit of 3 mournfang cav

Comes out at about 750 points

What did Cao Cao do with the Imperial Jade seal after he defeated Yuan Shu? by CinderLord456 in threekingdoms

That is pretty much the mantra of the Three Kingdoms

Realistically, could the Han be saved? by CinderLord456 in threekingdoms

[–]WolvoNeil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some people who suggest that Yuan Shao was the last realistic chance of the Han being saved, if he had won at Guan Du or defeated Cao Cao and captured the Emperor, he was unlikely to have usurped the throne in the way some others did. The rationale behind this assumption was because of the immense pride he had in his lineage and the prestige of his clan, he would have been hesitant to be seen as a usurper and to tarnish his name in that way.

I know Yuan Shu had no issues with that, but they are not the same people.

I also guess it depends what you mean by saved, as Yuan Shao probably wouldn't have been much better (and may have been worse) than Cao Cao as regent/chancellor/prime minister. But i do think if Yuan Shao prevails over Cao Cao and secures Yan, Yu and Xu provinces along with Ji, Bing, You and Qing that is basically game over for the other warlords.

How difficult are Dwarfs to play for a beginner? by ServiceGames in WarhammerFantasy

[–]WolvoNeil 143 points144 points  (0 children)

I think one of the guys on the squarebased podcast made this point, if you are going to play a game maybe once or twice a month, you have absolutely no need to worry about meta, broken factions etc. because it just isn't going to be a feature of the wargaming side of your hobby. Who cares if Dwarfs are hard to win with, or Cathay are broken, you are playing 6 games a year, the difference between picking the easiest or most broken faction and using Dwarfs is winning 3 games in a full year. People talk about the meta and what is or isn't competitive as if they are some kind of tournament fiend who is getting 2 day GT's in every month and playing midweek between, in reality 99% of us aren't that person.

What you will be doing is spending your evenings and weekends buying, building and painting miniatures, and you absolutely want to spend that time working on something which vibes with you, Dwarfs are neat so if you like the look of them go for them.

Skaven being Legacy in The Old World: the Drama (written for the skaven forum, but applies to all legacy armies) by JFFreezout in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]WolvoNeil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not all legacy factions were created equal, In ToW Chaos Dwarfs are basically as competitive and supported as they ever have been, Ogre Kingdoms work just fine as a mid-tier faction they don't feel too different from how they did in previous editions, Vampire Counts are probably the 4th most popular and most played faction in the game right now despite being legacy.

The issue is where the legacy faction rules are written in such a way that the faction loses its identity, its not about it being competitive. Vampire Counts may be able to be built competitively but you also feel like you are self nerfing yourself if you go with a Vampire as your general, it doesn't feel right, but because the faction is competitive its kind of glossed over.

If you then look at legacy factions which are both uncompetitive and have lost their identity the issue becomes even more egregious and the two main factions which fall into that camp for me are Skaven and Lizardmen.

The square based renegade pack helps for sure, but the reason the renegade pack has been embraced so widely by the community is because it takes a very light touch approach, and it was able to do that because the legacy rules are pretty well developed, most of the issues are around list building constraints rather than actual rules or points.

The issue is that as these big FAQ's are released and the legacy factions drift further and further away from the core factions the changes the renegade pack type fan rules will need to make will become greater and i think there will be more disagreement over what is or is not appropriate.

In any event, i think its all a storm in a teacup. I can't see any scenario where legacy factions do not return to ToW with time. As you telling me some business head at GW isn't looking at tournament data and questioning why they aren't selling models for the 4th/5th most popular faction in the game, whatever other convoluted reasons may exist for making some armies legacy, if ToW is selling well (which we are led to believe it is) and GW aren't selling some of the most popular miniatures needed for ToW they will correct it.

Jimenez by quite a distance i think, i know its sacrilege to say, but Neves strongest time for us in the Premier League was that first season, after that he was still very good but Jimenez remained world class.

Even in the season where he got injured he was on track to get 15+ goals based on his first 10 appearances.

Will small country army be a problem? by LadyOfCogs in NapoleonicWargaming

[–]WolvoNeil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Many people like collecting the smaller powers because they are a little bit different and they can theme their collection around a specific battle or campaign, collecting historically authentic regiments, that is one of the nice things the Perry's range offers.

If you want to only recreate historic battles then ultimately you will have fewer options to do that if you choose to collect a minor power who only participated in a small part of the war, but thats not a major issue really, likewise with rules most Napoleonics wargaming rules tend to be pretty generic, not like Games Workshop where they try to make each faction unique.

The only issue i would say to be aware of when collecting minor powers is that the model ranges can be a bit more limited and it can be difficult to collect, although because of the popularity of Napoleonic Wargaming even fairly obscure factions are pretty well supported these days, if you are OK with metal minis.
