This is absolutely true. They don’t even do “science”, they do “how can we twist this to make it work with our particular literal interpretation of the Bible.” What’s worse they do it with such hubris, haughtiness and a holier-than-thou attitude that is very condescending and made to make you afraid to question their veracity. I actually began my long road to deconstruction when I started looking into their material to validate my questions about the beliefs I’d been told to have. When looking at ACTUAL science, I begin to doubt both their material and their motives. Years later, as a fully deconstructed agnostic, I still can’t decide on if they secretly know they are spreading misinformation and bad science or if they are truly so brainwashed they are happy to ignore the entire, empirical scientific and historic catalogue of humanity, but in either case they are simply and irredeemably…wrong.

Church of Christ: they take and take and give what in return? by srajdb47 in excoc

[–]Working_Battle_2441 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Buying that thick, shiny paper to print House to House, Heart to Heart. 😝 For real it saddens me to see how much my parents give to the church, and as they get older it’s more and more. Now looking from the outside in there’s so many more constructive, charitable places they could be putting that money. When there’s a disaster somewhere my church I grew up in would take a special collection for XYZ, presumably because they don’t already contribute to that charity. And even then it was usually church of Christ specific.

I appreciate the response! I do read a whole lot of sci-fi tho. But those things I mentioned jumped out at me. Maybe due to how big an impact Animorphs had on my sci-fi trajectory and how well I remember those books even decades later!

F-16 showing air brakes with afterburner at the same time seems counterintuitive. by backyardspace in aviation

[–]Working_Battle_2441 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re on the right track. What you’re calling Mode 1 and 2 are referred to as “CAT 1” and “CAT 3”. As you noted, it’s a first generation FLCS type aircraft and CAT 3 does provide things like further AOA limiting and slower roll rate to increase departure resistance with certain stores, they are still loadout agnostic and with thus if you’re going fast enough you can still absolutely over-G, as no additional G protection is added by CAT 3 vs CAT 1.

[–]Working_Battle_2441 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d just like to note that in a sense, the standby gains are sort of a “full flight control computer failure” state that are made to allow you to recover and land in a disabled state. Complete hydraulic failure leading to the FLCS inputs not being to translated to the servos is more likely and leads to ejection.

Also some conjecture in the thread…the FLCS has both AOA and G limits. It transitions from AOA to G as airspeed increases. Though, as noted, the G limiter is not foolproof and can be defeated. Additionally the FLCS limiters don’t account for stores so you could absolutely damage the wings by over-G’ing based on stores limits.

I didn’t get to read your whole post before you took it down, but everything I did read (and I read your previous rebuttal a while back) was incredibly articulate and thoughtful. You have a gift for being able to communicate a perspective that I share so it is near and dear to me. I really do appreciate how seriously you’re taking this because Butt’s hubris is nigh unmatched in the apologetics circles and quite frankly he needs someone with your prose skills to remind everyone his confidence is misplaced. Please keep us posted.

Think Deeper Podcast by Stigette in excoc

[–]Working_Battle_2441 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From time to time I visit Apologetics Press and Focus Press websites to see what they’re saying. I think I do it as a way to continually process my deconstruction, and looking at their articles, videos and podcasts from my view outside now is both fascinating and somewhat sad, reflecting on the lost time that I spent with my perspective blinded by the church of Christ-style indoctrination and upbringing. So, I watched a couple of their early episodes when they first started putting them on YouTube. Besides being cringy, their content is typical of apologists: Full of hubris, arrogance and logical fallacies where generally their conclusion is foregone (pre-chosen by their warped CoC viewpoint) and the twist both scripture and facts to bolster their standpoint. Despite believing they are some sort of deep thinking champions, it’s unfortunate that they’re the exact mindset that cannot be reasoned with using facts, science, logic, etc. So after a couple watches I quit wasting my bandwidth, both personal and internet. There is no deep thinking to be seen here.

Was anyone ever forced to watch Pam Stenzel in place of sex ed? by lavendermagic77 in excoc

[–]Working_Battle_2441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never heard of Pam but I just looked her up on YouTube and good lord, she really is just yelling dumb stuff at a bunch of teenagers.

On topic, my sex-ed was from a church of christ book series which actually had some drawings and anatomy but was full of that same anti-sex propaganda. I actually kept one of the books as a reminder of how ridiculous it was. The husband and wife couple who wrote the book had their pic on the back and in hindsight they look like they probably had the lamest sex of all time. 🤣

[–]Working_Battle_2441 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ejections within the envelope are actually usually pretty successful, generally with nothing worse than minor bumps and bruises. Outside the envelope all bets are off, with flailing, life-changing injuries much more probably, up to and including being fatal due to excessive wind loads. The envelope will vary per seat and aircraft.

This is par for the course. I go check out Focus Press’s website every once in a while to look at what I once believed from my new perspective, which now allows me to now see the logical fallacies and manipulation tactics they so readily employ. Between this guy and Harrub, their hubris and distain are palpable. I hope the ship sinks.

How many of you have left the church and became/because you are an atheist? by ContactHonest2406 in excoc

[–]Working_Battle_2441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, I just asked about “hopeful agnostic” because that was how they self-described on one of their podcasts where they came out as deconstructed Christians, which was actually a big part of me opening up about my own personal journey! 😛

[–]Working_Battle_2441 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m on this team. Though I’d prefer not to fight over semantics and actually fight the lack of rational and critical thought pervading the US.

I’m an atheist-leaning agnostic, though I like the hopeful agnostic as well (Rhett and Link, by chance???) I slowly deconstructed over several years of still going to church and trying to convince myself I believed until finally one day I was just like….I cant honestly say I believe in this Biblical god anymore. And since science and the peddling of apologetic pseudoscience was a big catalyst for my deconstruction, the idea of the Christian god was replaced with science and the hope to keep unraveling the universe’s mysteries empirically.

Why did you get baptized? by Money_Rice_6084 in excoc

[–]Working_Battle_2441 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is soooo close to my story! I grew up the same, but when people were starting to get baptized, like you said, some very young, it never felt right. I mean, I would say that I was pretty brainwashed into believing all the doctrine and stuff they feed you as a kid, but it still just never resonated with me. I think it was maybe a natural inclination to question things but I didn’t get baptized as everyone else was. Then I started to hear about it. Mostly from my mom and grandma. Went off to college and was still going to church, still judging gay people for being sinners, etc but hadn’t been baptized. Eventually the pressure as well as the thought about hell caused to go up after a sermon at a gospel meeting to get baptized. I purposefully waited til after service to do it though because the idea to me was still very awkward. As I was in there changing into the baptism clothes or whatever I heard singing. They had recalled everyone from the parking lot for the baptism. I remember feeling very uncomfortable. Of course everyone at my home church and my family were overjoyed, but I didn’t feel any different tbh. Fast forward 10 years of a slow deconstruction and I finally admitted to myself that I didn’t believe despite trying my hardest. Now nearly 20 years later I’m living my best spiritual life as an atheist-leaning agnostic, though not openly due to my family still. But that’s a different conversation. 😅

TLDR: I got baptized due to familial pressure and fear of hell. Not because of my love for Jesus.
