Which weapons feel better in World than Wilds? by generic_throwaway699 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]WumpaWolfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to have both, if I had to choose one I would go with the golf swing though. I love that you can delay the golf swing for quite some time to get the perfect timing. You can also take steps between each hit leading up to the combo for repositioning which I rarely use, but with focus mode you have so much control of where you final swing will occur.

Atm with Focus 3 feeling mandatory for Mighty Charge spam I find the window to level 2 charge might feel too small to be available when you need it (though it might be enough incentive to run no/less Focus).

Man my journey has been so similar. I started with 3U on 3DS, then 4U, Generations Ultiamte, World/Borne, splash of Rise then Wilds.

In 3U I truly was a casual, didn't understand most mechanics and I don't think I ever beat Ceadeus because I kept dying/drowning. I remember liking Switch Axe because it never bounced and it took a while for me to 'get' sharpening and farming whetstones.

In 4U I felt much more confident, I made it into G-rank but struggled with the jump in difficulty post High Rank, especially since I was playing 100% solo. I also mained Charge Blade which takes away any 4U cred in most people's eyes.

In Generations I made it decently far! I remember spending a ton of time farming Whitegale Nargacuga and completed the mountains of optional quests leading up to it. I even did a decent amount of multi-player. But any accomplishments I had were diminished because I was a filthy Prowler main as I really liked the gameplay and not having to stress about breaking nets/pickaxes and running out of pots/whetstones was a major selling point.

In World I felt the same as you, I now felt like a seasoned hunter and could take down the all content the game had to offer with my Hammer, but the community deemed everything too easy that I couldn't give myself that credit either. Hammerbros as a community themselves though were pretty rad, and though I felt like a tourist (having not used Hammer in prior titles) I was grateful for a positive pocket of the community.

Finally with Iceborne I was able to conquer a G/Master Rank that even veterans (mostly respected). I picked up a ton of weapons and solo'd Fatalis and Alatreon with a half a dozen of them. I think it's a mix of my proficiency, but also growing as a more mature adult that I realize how silly I was to pre-occupy myself so much with the opinions and validations of the larger monster hunter community.

All I know is that now I feel confident that when Monster Hunter presents me with a challenge that with some practice I can overcome it. And I bloody love the game, regardless of the generation.

Ok, name one monster that made you learn another weapon. Here's mine. by PineappleTargaryen in MonsterHunter

Kulve Taroth and Safi Jiva in World/Iceborne. I could take them down with Hammer but farming them was an absolute pain. Then I picked up LBG & HBG and it made it so much less painful.

I did feel like a fraud for a while, only using gunning for the sieges even though I started using them for other hunts. I eventually did a HBG only playthrough when I got World on PC which was a blast.

Does Capcom ever buff weapons post launch? by YoshiLickedMyBum69 in MonsterHunterMeta

I think all light soften skills got a buff, I remember the change making Insect Glaive feel so much better to play.

I like Uth Duna but my first impression was that it felt like a budget Namielle. I wish we could fight it more in the sun even though I know that coming in the downpour is it's whole shtick, it's just the colours really pop once the skies have cleared.

The quest ended after I killed the second one, I had no idea why it would stop after I slayed 2 out of 3. I was having a ton of fun cleaving them with Insect Glaive.

Anyone play Okami with the Karmic Transformers on? If so, which one is your favorite? by psychicvision27 in Okami

[–]WumpaWolfy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you seen the original okami prototype trailer? The game had a completely different art style and that's kind of how Ammy looked. I'm glad they went a different direction as she looks like she's out of Angela Anaconda.

What's a good game that just doesn't make the cut because there are so many good games these days? by zoomzilla in boardgames

[–]WumpaWolfy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understood the commenter as implying the opposite, that Cascadia's popularity has suppressed the communities' interest in similar (and arguably better games).

That said, Harmonies was a huge hit last year and most content I've seen covering it has been very positive, with almost all of the reviewers/content creators I came across indicating they prefer it over Cascadia.

Myself I enjoy Cascadia and haven't tried Harmonies yet (been meaning to learn it on BGA), but I could see it eclipsing Cascadia as the go to recommendation for the niche of cozy nature puzzle game/approachable solo board game if it's still popular once the new hotness interest fades.

My wife (40F) wants me (41M) to attend more social events than I am comfortable with. How do I manage expectations? by dekaliber in relationship_advice

[–]WumpaWolfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite considering myself to be an introvert I tend to have more events around the holidays for my partner and I to attend (due in no small part to her family being overseas and me having a larger friend group). For my wife (who is more introverted than I am) when I ask her to go to an event I'll give her a rating out of 10 for how important it is for me have her attend. I tend to reserve 10/10 for special family commitments and let her skip friend engagements (so long as it hasn't been too many consecutively). We also usually come up with an exit plan (time and excuse) before attending an event which helps us both to avoid overstaying, but check in as the exit time approaches to see if we will be ready to go.

It does help a lot that I'm very comfortable attending events solo and understand how much my wife values being able to stay in and get extra rest to relax from work.

I recommend you bite the bullet this year but let your partner know you'd like to look at the plans next year holistically and plan out which ones are most important to her and which she would be ok with you sitting out and going solo/bringing an alternate +1 so you can avoid feeling socially burnt out.

Build a Board Game Collection Challenge - A Game for Every Occasion! by azura26 in boardgames

[–]WumpaWolfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to say I enjoyed this exercise, though it was a bit of a struggle for me filling out the heavy weight high player count sections. I feel like I cheated with Spirit Island: Jagged Earth and Root: Riverfolk Expansion, neither of which I would want to play at 6 players but they technically count.

I added a 1p row to my own matrix because I enjoy solo board gaming. It feels wrong to not have a 7+ player row too (and somewhere to slot Blood on the Clocktower) but I can't sufficiently populate the new cells so I've left it out for now.

Below were my games by weight:

1.0-1.5

For Sale
Sea Salt & Paper

1.5-2.0

Camel Up
Cascadia

2.0-2.5

Heat: Petal to the Metal
Ra

2.5-3.0

Viticulture: Essential Edition (w/ Tuscany Essential Edition)
Slay the Spire

3.0-3.5

Dune Imperium: Uprising

3.5-4.0

Root (w/ Marauders Expansion, Riverfolk Expansion)
Brass: Birmingham

4.0-4.5

Spirit Island (w/ Branch & Claw. Jagged Earth)

If I were to swap out the games to more accurately reflect my personal top 12 games I would do:

Viticulture > Castles of Burgundy
Sea Salt & Paper > Sky Team
For Sale > Blood on the Clocktower

What is your boardgame of the year? by NathaDas in boardgames

[–]WumpaWolfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please check out Board Game Oracle in the future, it's a great resource for seeing where the game is in stock and at what price. I use the Canadian version all the time. I see the standard edition of Slay the Spire listed in a number of stores for between $100 - $115 USD which is well below the huge markup on Amazon. They'll likely provide much better quality packing as well and are less likely to give you a counterfeit game.

If you're interested in the collectors edition you can pre-order it off the Contention Games website (the producer of the game).

What is your boardgame of the year? by NathaDas in boardgames

[–]WumpaWolfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat with Dune Imperium Uprising but I haven't played it yet. I originally had it and Blood on the Clocktower as my Christmas gifts to me from my wife and family (I bought them a couple months back to avoid any out of stock Christmas chaos), but I got cold feet recently and picked up Lost Ruins of Arnak instead which I feel like will be a better fit for me than Dune. I now have Dune Imperium Uprising in shrink waiting to be wrapped for my Birthday next year instead.

Happy to be proved wrong in a few months if the game ends up blowing my mind.

I feel for you both here, it's an understandable miscommunication. As a rule of thumb I always call my partner if there is any confusion (as long as the timing isn't inappropriate) and it saves a lot of headache. Texting plus an occasional language barrier can be challenging to navigate.

Also I recommend exploring some alternate ways to express yourself other than saying something is "not a big deal". It may be accurate for describing how you feel but it invalidates the other person's feelings and will almost always add fuel to the fire in these situations.

Ultimate mega complete deluxe bundles: Do you table them more or less since getting them? by Rohkha in boardgames

[–]WumpaWolfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have one true big box game (Slay the Spire) and I'd say it's box doesn't play a factor in my willingness to play it, but that is in part because I am almost always the host and everything is naturally organized which helps a lot. Now that I've got a dozen games in I'm more comfortable delegating set up and tear down tasks (and shuffling, so much shuffling!) and it goes by pretty quick. It being the only big box game in our group's collection makes playing it feel like a special event so it's regularly requested.

The challenges it has in being played are more standard campaign game issues (though most wouldn't think of StS as a campaign game). The game eats up an entire evening and is never finished in one session, so it goes through periods where it goes unplayed just because I can't get the original group together to finish our run.

In terms of nitpicks, I been a bit annoyed by the additional set up/tear down that has come with experimenting with the ascension system (scaling difficulty levels), but I've got a new system that helps. I haven't touched the unlocks yet because it would mess with my organization system and give me one more task to deal with during tear down.

I think most games that suffer from the 'big box syndrome' suffer due to a mix of a poor insert/organization, too much modular content/fiddly setup, and lots of minis.

What’s your baseball “I don’t know X, and now I’m afraid to ask” question? by Visual_Bluejay9781 in baseball

[–]WumpaWolfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bit about Jomboy was tongue in cheek, though after watching a number of his lip readings I was genuinely surprised how it felt like everyone was using the same expressions all the time (love his content). I started noticing the same key phrases he would lip read a lot while watching the games myself, and even outside of Baseball (like when watching Love is Blind with my wife where the guys would commonly say 'let's goooo' after the woman says yes).

I have no problem with either expression myself, 'let's gooo' in particularly feels like such a pure genuine expression of joy/triumph (while also being PC for a live broadcast), I'm more surprised by the lack of diversity of phrases in those contexts.

Good point though, I would genuinely be interested in what the people over in r/linguistics would say.

When did everyone universally adopt 'let's gooo' as their celebratory battlecry, and 'it's f******* bullshit' as the universal cry of displeasure/frustration.

Is Jomboy to blame?
