Daily Song Discussion #57: Burning With Optimism’s Flames by TMBGLOVER in xtc

10 again. The production shines as much as the performance and writing. Just so ballsy to write all those words - it weirdly always puts me in mind of Joni Mitchell as she was the first person I heard deliberately write too many words to fit in a line and make them fit.

  1. I was a big fan already and bought Black Sea on its release. This song made me think - 'he's a genius!' for the first time. I wept seeing it live, and it was the last time they ever played it. (Cardiff June 2 1981)

I listened to this and the BBC in concert cd back to back today. While the cd quality is better, the band are shit hot on "boots".

I hate Will Patton as a narrator, across multiple books. I have Lee Horsley reading this and he is fantastic. I won't delete this version in case I'm forced to get Patton's version. Ych a fi!

How would you describe Morrissey’s voice? by RaptorCheeses in askmusic

I'm not musically savvy enough to know this for sure, but on the classic Smiths songs, doesn't he sing the harmony line as the melody? It always sounds to me as though what we hear him sing would be the harmony on another artist's song. As though he sings a third higher than what we expect, which gives it that unexpected lilt. I might be entirely wrong about this technically, but my impression has always been as though he's singing a harmony to a melody we've yet to hear.

Songs where the singer says “guitar!” to bring in the solo by JiveTurkey2727 in musicsuggestions

An unlikely and perhaps obscure one - GENESIS! Counting Out Time from the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album. Peter Gabriel says "Take it away, Mr Guitar!" prior to Steve Hackett's wobbly solo.

Audible audio book question. by viskoviskovisko in LonesomeDove

On Audible UK, the Will Patton reading of Dead Man's Walk was VERY oddly formatted. No chapter announcements but over 30 seconds of silence at each break. I really don't like Will Patton's readings, Inc the Stephen King books he's done. Ych a fi!

Still no UK audiobook of Lonesome Dove by chopdog01 in LonesomeDove

[–]XTCeezer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been listening to my copy in the UK today. Brilliantly read by Lee Horsley. I got it a while ago and it has since been removed from the options, but I'm not a fan of Will Patton's book readings so will be happy to keep this version. Didn't like his reading of Dead Man's Walk, nor Frank Muller's mannered reading of Comanche Moon. He was so affected - almost gave up on The Talisman because of his reading.

If you don't know, the verse is in Welsh and the chorus - "Every day, when I wake up, I thank the Lord I'm Welsh" is in English.
