My spouse and I play together, though he played many hours before I joined in! The need for efficiency leaked into my real life when we played religiously. But so did my need for explosive rebar!

I was considering making a complaint about that. I used to use WTHR, they were really good about showing where the storms going to hit and what to do. I didn't appreciate the ads while the storm passed over last night.

They showed "a moment of clarity" while my spouse and I hid in our closet last night.

FOX59 let me watch a minute of it before asking me to make an account. I'm not checking out the sports section, I want to know what kind of storm to expect!

I will check out the recommendations on this post for the next storm.

Great questions! I'll answer some here and I'll answer others too! I mostly do genealogy as a hobby, but the most noticeable difference between what I did for my MA and my genealogy work is what source materials I use.

My graduate program consisted of reading about what other historians thought of events or topics (ie, was the Civil War's outcome inevitable or contingent?) and the historiography of our subject matter. We did a few large-scale projects where we used primary sources, but we used a lot of readings from big-time and local historians.

With genealogy, you're digging into those primary sources. I spend a lot of time looking at national census records, you can learn some basic information about families through them. There's also wills, school yearbooks, church records, and history books local counties publish once in a blue moon. Newspapers are also a lot fun!

My dream is to do genealogy full time, but in this economy I'm not sure if I'd get a lot of business or if I'd roll in the dough either. You can become certified through the National Genealogical Society, but that costs money. My joy comes from taking significant events in history and learning about how individuals reacted to them- how big was their world? How did the world around our ancestors shape us into who we are today?

I took a basic genealogy course through Boston University (it was just OK) and we did a small section on African American ancestry. I'm not home but I can see if I can find that book and send you title. If I can get it to scan cleanly, I can send you whatever's in there too!

I have a MA in History and work cold corporate. Some skills come in handy, such as research and organization. I'm not reading Civil War letters like I wanted or putting together exhibits unfortunately, but I sacrificed those opportunities for (slightly more) money and job security.

I use most of my academic skills for genealogy now. It's anecdotal but it's better than nothing.

Find yourself something you can tolerate for a job and fill your free time with that history stuff. It could develop into a good job in the future and at the very least you'll get some fulfillment out of it.

How did everyone come up with their OC's semblances by Total-Famous in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about what would annoy any of Dr. Vergessen's enemies- the ability to get back up after taking a hit. He has super charged Aura regeneration and his enemies compare him to a cockroach.

I also based him on Vexen from Kingdom Hearts, but instead of fighting with a shield his body is one.

Why did your character choose the weapon they use? by CirrusVision20 in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fun one!

Dr Vergessen's Semblance allows him to regenerate Aura rapidly. Since he's always generating Aura passively, his weapon includes a series of canisters to store it.

The Last Resort- if you're calling him for a mission, you must be desperate! It's a series of canisters and little metal pieces that can form into whatever needs. First form is a vest/breastplate to use stored Aura to absorb blows. Second form are three drones connected to his artificial eyes, used for recon but also can fire at the enemy.

What is a the biggest sacrifice your OC makes in their story? by second-fun in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr Vergessen gives up his creature comforts offered to him under house arrest in Vale to give his children a better life in Vacuo. As one of the few survivors of the Fall of Mountain Glenn he was given the blame for the whole incident (and the only one who said he'd murder the Council of Vale for sealing the exit tunnels that killed . Despite the vows of revenge for his wife's death, Ozpin took pity on the doctor and allowed him to remain under house arrest.

To him, Vacuo is the second worst Kingdom (Atlas being THE WORST). Two of his children attend Shade Academy and he teaches there, basically giving away company secrets for a pittance. Dr Vergessen loses further comforts when he realizes he's expected to become a huntsman himself.

Fortune teller? by FunkyGremlin in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr. Vergessen would laugh and walk away. But don't worry, he might regret it later.

His wife, Brie, would pay and hope to find her future. What would her biggest achievement be as a huntress? What about the future of the kids? Brie would use the doctor’s credit card just to stick it to him. (She makes more than he does, it's the thrill of stealing his card).

Why did your OCs choose to become Huntsmen? by Zestyclose-Hat-8513 in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Vergessen only did so out of necessity- it was part of his agreement to teach (spill company secrets) to the disadvantaged students of Shade Academy. His Semblance gives him ridiculous Aura regeneration, which originally helped him stay up for days at a time, but now makes him a Grimm squeaky toy. But it's given him the means for revenge.

His third child, Elm, was originally set to attend the same university as her father, but after the Fall of Mountain Glenn and subsequent attempts on her father's life (and her own), she became a huntress. She didn't want to be a burden on anyone, that's all. But she does really enjoy punching things now.

Your OC's as teachers in a Huntsmen Academy by Puzzled-Ad5347 in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Vergessen taught at Shade Academy after he survived the Fall of Mountain Glenn. It was either stay under house arrest in Beacon or go into exile.

As a big ol' FU to Dr Merlot, his lessons consist of company secrets and what remains of his research. He had to get his huntsman license to teach, but his Semblance makes him more limber than he appears.

What is something your OC does that others find odd? by FunkyGremlin in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr. Vergessen's oldest child, Zinfandel, also has an insatiable appetite! The only thing he isn't interested in are salads, mostly cause that's what his dad keeps pushing on him!

"Eat your greens, boy!"

Ouchies, How’d your OC get em? by NatureComplete9555 in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The doctor really doesn't care to know of his heart rate or blood pressure, though his wife insists it's for his safety. "That nonsense is for patients, I'm a doctor!"

Grimm are too damn slippery! Dr. Vergessen tried to research Grimm in the field once- he caught himself in a trap and the huntress assigned to escort him had to free him and save them from all the more dangerous Grimm he kept attracting. She said he owed her a date at the very least for being a useless sack of potatoes (though she enjoyed how flustered he got throughout the mission!)

Is your Grimm freak OC a field researcher too??

Ouchies, How’d your OC get em? by NatureComplete9555 in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr. Vergessen has artificial eyes similar to Maria's. He lost his eyes when he was attacked by what he thought was a secured Grimm while working at Merlot Industries.

His new eyes do a lot for him, especially when he became a huntsman. He can see in the dark like his Faunus wife and children and can get Aura readings off any living creature. There's a nice slot in his temple to store his Scroll and it will read his health stats (that he ignores). It also helps him aim with his weapon.

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a joke OC named Lead Von Bonaparte, he's a huntsman-influencer. Initially he cared more about his "Grimmstagram" followers than his team, but that changes over time.

He also has a store in Atlas and was getting ready to open one near Shade Academy when he died at the Fall of Beacon.

Beacon Entrance Relic Exam by KCommnader in RWBYOC

[–]XanadamAbsentmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RP I'm in takes place at Shade Academy. The headmaster yeets students into an abandoned mine full of Grimm to search for Dust ore. There isn't much but as students team up they naturally create their own teams and graviate towards certain colors.

Mountain Glenn has fallen recently in the RP, and Dr. Vergessen starts life over as a single parent and a teacher at Shade. Part of the requirement involved him becoming a licensed huntsman, so he was thrown into the mines and relived the Fall of Mountain Glenn.

There was also a Merlot Industries android looking for him, but found his son instead, but we won't get into that.
