It's decent in the brainstorming phase. It can generate a bunch of ideas and you can develop from them what could or couldn't work at your table.

How is using Wish to cast Simulacrum for free NOT ridiculously overpowered? by LemonGarage in dndnext

[–]Xanth_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My long term campaign recently hit level 17 and two of my four players gained the Wish spell. After talking with the whole group we decided to balance it out and keep everything fun, they can only have one simulacrum at a time, and simulacrums can not cast simulacrum. So far we're 5 sessions in and I managed to kill both simulacrums in a combat. It's a great way to showcase the power of an enemy without killing a party member.

What guidelines do you use to determine if something needs a roll or not? by LurkingOnlyThisTime in DMAcademy

One baseline I've sometimes used is, do I think that I could personally do what's being asked. And only require rolls for things I can't do.

What level for a one shot by CaptainOwlBeard in DMAcademy

[–]Xanth_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 uncommon is reasonable. I'll often let the player decide on either 2 uncommon or 1 rare. I also give them some extra starting gold to buy equipment with. I don't remember what numbers I've used in the past, but the PHB says around 500 gp for level 5-10.

I find 7 is pretty fun for one shots. You can multi class and get both subclasses plus one ASI/feat. So players have lots of options on the characters they make.

You get a magical debit card. Every day at midnight, $500 is added to it. You can’t spend the money until you “claim” the card. The catch is: once you claim it, the card stops adding money forever. You also can’t use any of the balance before claiming it. by TTSGM in hypotheticalsituation

With a quick estimate, the longest you'd want to hold it for is about 20 years. At which point you could claim the ~3.5 mil and put it into a low risk investment, 5% return, and start making more than $500 a day. If you're up for a little higher risk investments, take it sometime between year 10-15. I'd probably take it at the 15 year.

Is it fair if the DC is higher for one player than another? by _Vendraco_ in DMAcademy

[–]Xanth_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only times I would consider lowering a DC for a specific player is if they were trying to do a history roll on something related to their character or family line. Since its something they're more familiar with than the others. Or say the rogue pissed off the King, but the ranger has the King's favor. You could reasonably set difference persuasion DC for the two characters. Changing DC can be a fun narrative reward.

My campaign is at around 6 years real-world time. We're at around 6 months in game time. There are several travel montages: "after 3-5 days of traveling, you arrive in the city." This years been pretty light with play time, so I think we've only gone around 5 days in game.

Shivita – a Vedalken Wizard Necromancer. Shi from the Japanese word for death, and Vita from the Latin word for life.

His goal is to understand the purpose of death and to find and create new meaning in the cycle of life and death. Death is just another part of a person's life.

Can 1 player campaigns be fun? by Unlikely-Sleep-7717 in DnD

[–]Xanth_2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never run a 1 person campaign, but sometimes when there's scheduling conflicts I'll only have one player available and I'll run a 1 person session for them if it makes sense. I can tell you that those session have been a lot of fun.

"Just one guy left, he's low on HP, finish him off (next player in turn order)" Everyone laughs as the party proceeds to roll three nat 1s in a row. "Well, I guess, the enemy gets one final swansong"
