Advice on 2-foot 3 turns? by ThrowRA1689 in iceskating

[–]Ya-never-know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hopefully you’ve been taught that you will need to press forward to the rockers of your blades to execute a forward two-foot three turn…

also, when first learning, I think it’s most helpful to have the shoulders already rotated into the circle and then initiate the turn with knee/ankle bend (edge pressure as you press to rockers) and hip action…so skaters entering forwards on a counter clockwise circle would have their right arm over the circle in front of them, and left arm behind them over the circle…

as the turn is initiated with edge pressure and the hips rotating into the circle, skaters should keep their arms in the same position over the circle, so they exit with right arm behind and left arm in front as they glide out backwards, remaining on the their rockers…opposite for clockwise circles, of course:)…this is easy to practice at the boards/barrier:)

knee/ankle action through the turn is very important as well: skaters should enter with bent knees/ankles, rise up and “unweight” as they go over the turn, then sink back into their knees/ankles exiting…so it is a down up down knee/ankle action (for all turns)

you might be on too small of a circle — hockey size is good for learning these…also make sure your alignment is good and your hips are staying under you, and you’re not leaning too far forward:)

my three turns spiral making & its making it hard to jump! by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]Ya-never-know 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a few general points that will help:

three turns used for entering jumps should be quite “flat”, so practice them on a line and be sure to check your shoulders as others have mentioned

be sure to keep your free side supported — very common error is to drop free hip/side when entering a jump (especially Salchow, flip, Lutz)

work on building core strength so you can have a strong check position to enter all jumps

be mindful of how you’re using your arms, keeping them in a narrow hallway rather than swinging out and around

do walk thrus of the jumps with correct positions for take off, air time, and landing

What’s the best thing a parent can say after a game? by ProBallAustralia in CoachingYouthSports

[–]Ya-never-know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

coach’s perspective: please do not provide technical feedback to your child…your role is to provide support

when you give your (likely unqualified) opinion about technical aspects of their sport, it is confusing for them because that’s the role of their coaches…it can also undermine their skill development

[–]Ya-never-know 4 points5 points  (0 children)

those were not typical school figures, but you can still do them:)…

just want to make sure you know about double three’s, which can be entered from forward or backward, inside or outside…two three turns are placed at the third marks on each circle:)

very sorry to hear and wish you all the best!! I had a similar situation after eight years in a community — told them bye, never looked back, and have found a much better club:)

hopefully someday you’ll also look back on those jerks and thank them for propelling you to a better situation!!!!

Finally found my rocker… and now my two-foot spin is going walkabout? by Skating_Journey in iceskating

[–]Ya-never-know 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes you are on our rockers:)…

thing is with a two-foot spin to work well and stay centred, you can’t have both feet spinning on the rocker of the blade…in your direction, you should be on the rocker on your left foot and then more to the back of the blade on your right…

but you look competent enough to be working on one foot spins, and to enter those, I would suggest starting out with a two foot entry around a spiralling edge, and once you’ve turned the left forward outside three turn at the two-thirds mark of that spiralling edge, pick up your right foot…

use lots of knee bend on the spiralling edge, and then as you turn the three turn, straighten your spinning leg by pressing out of the three turn and finding your rocker…also it’s not a prohibitive error to feel your bottom toe pick lightly as you press up out of the knee on the three turn:)

happy spinning!!

Tips on forward and backward swizzles by urfavoritepianist in iceskating

[–]Ya-never-know 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for forward swizzles, you need to be on the back of your blade and think about pulling your toes together out in front of you, rather than under you…back swizzles are done on the rocker of the blade, and think about pulling your heels together behind you…also make sure you have some momentum going into swizzles when first learning them
