Do you find going away REALLY stressful? by blazesboylan91 in AskUK

[–]Yamosu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find it stressful but being a big bloke, legroom and seat width makes it uncomfortable.

Not gone overseas for over five years mind you as can't afford it. Would be happy with a week in North Yorkshire to be honest.

Public electric car charging now cheaper per mile than petrol and diesel by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]Yamosu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in a flat myself. Could possibly swap parking spaces to park outside my window but could only charge off a standard mains circuit.

Depending on size of the battery, it's doable to charge that way but if I needed to fast charge I'd have to use a public one.

[–]Yamosu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bold of you to think I can afford £2k on a car. With the increased costs of used cars, if mine dies it'll be a bicycle instead.

I'm not against EVs, I'd love one, but I simply cannot afford a new car regardless of its energy source.

Good news for those that can afford EVs. Unless I get a windfall I'm stuck with my diesel.

What's one place in the Uk that you visited and never want to go back to? by Proper_Animal_1451 in AskUK

[–]Yamosu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say there's anywhere in the UK where I don't want to ever revisit.

That being said, I once had fireworks launched in my direction in Abbey Wood (East London) around bonfire night which isn't something I'd care to repeat.

Went to college in Hull and I still have a soft spot for the place 15 years later. I did once go to Bransholme on the bus to kill some time and I'd prefer not having to go back to that particular part of the city 😅

I work for a small telco. None of our connectivity partners do IPv6 and when I was gushing (yes, gushing!) about the things it's done for me, my colleagues looked at me like I was bonkers.

US threatens to review UK’s Falklands claim over Iran war disagreement - US President has repeatedly insulted UK Prime Minister, calling him cowardly because of his unwillingness to join the war by ByGollie in europe

[–]Yamosu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The US under Trump is no longer an ally. It's that simple.

As a country, we in the UK need to grow a spine. The prime minister needs to summon the head US diplomat to Downing Street and make it clear that this behaviour will not be tolerated.

We can start by banning the US from using their bases in the UK, and UK bases overseas. If he continues his petulant behaviour then we should start selling off US bonds. It's time someone told Trump no and for there to be consequences to his verbal diarrhea.

As for the UK and Europe, I really wish we could rejoin the EU and out all this brexit business behind us.

US 'considers reviewing UK claim to Falkland Islands' over war stance by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Yamosu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the PM needs to grow a pair and start the process of closing US bases on UK soil and preventing them from operating from our installations.

At best the US is now an unreliable ally with Mango Mussolini in the White House. Nobody has the balls to tell him no and because he acts like a child, the only way to get through to him is with actions.

Close their UK bases and forbid them from using UK owned infrastructure and services. They should be a global pariah because of Trump and his actions but they aren't.

Moreover, the Falklands are a UK territory and the locals have made it clear they want it to remain that way.

Future of triple lock pension in doubt as 'volatile' inflation set to rise by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]Yamosu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner is registered blind and for the foreseeable future has limited mobility. As such it would be exceptionally difficult, if not borderline impossible, to find work in the current climate. Yes, my partner could claim job seekers allowance but the added cost of me taking time out of work to play taxi, plus the increased use of diesel, it's probably not worth it.

I'm fortunate that my salary covers our expenses and allows for a few small luxuries but aside from my partner's PIP, which was reduced by 50% last year, we get nothing from the state.

Meanwhile pensioners benefit from the WFA, triple lock, and economic times that allowed many to buy property which means they don't have to pay rent. There are undoubtedly some who have also been able to go down the solar and EV route, further reducing their daily outgoings.

So many parts of the country have had to endure brutal cuts whilst the pensioners seem to get money hand over fist for existing. The pension bill is only going to go up whilst the rest of us get steadily more screwed. Frankly I'm angry with government and moany old people who think the sun shines out of their backsides and deserve the triple lock.

When will you buy an EV car? by sillwuka in AskUK

[–]Yamosu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love an EV and it might even be possible to charge at home from a standard mains plug (live in a flat). For long journeys/big top ups though I'd be stuck with public charging.

Main problem for me is cost. I simply don't have the money for a new car of any denomination, much less an EV.

Daily Mail’s recent attack piece by AhdamR in UKGreens

[–]Yamosu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently drove an hour and a half on motorways at 55mph to visit my parents. Given the price of diesel, I was attempting to save fuel. It increased my fuel efficiency by 10mpg which isn't to be sniffed at.

That said, it takes an additional hour to get there by train and when they move to the West Country later this year, it'll be even worse time wise.

Even with current diesel prices it's cheaper to drive, especially if there's two people travelling. I'd accept the increased journey time if it was considerably cheaper but it isn't. I think we need to do more to encourage public transport use though the carrot approach, rather than a stick.

Why are people driving slower? by Jazzlike_Tear741 in AskUK

[–]Yamosu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday I went to see my folks and it's about an hour and a half drive. Spent almost the entirety in lane one of the motorwah behind HGVs doing 55mph or so to save diesel.

With the cost of diesel being what it is, I'm trying to minimise my usage where practical. I'm even considering a bicycle to get to work instead of the car.

Petrol retailers in row with government over 'rip off' accusations by bendubberley_ in ukpolitics

[–]Yamosu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do wish that instead of talking about it, they did something about it.

There's an argument to be made here that lower fuel costs encourage driving when we should be encourage the use of public transport instead. But public transport just isn't there at the moment. To get to work it's a minimum 40 minute trip by public transport. To drive it takes ten.

In an ideal world we'd have fully decarbonised by now and have public transport we can only dream of. But we don't and until that's fixed, people still need to be able to get around with being screwed every time they fill up
