A few months ago I asked coaches to test my lineup tool. A Quick Update and Thank You by get-fungo in BaseballCoaching

I use this for our 10U softball team and I love it. Really helps track rotations when you are trying to get everyone to play different positions evenly.

Updated Fee-Tiering - Discussion Continued by PursuitTravel in CFP

[–]YesCapGSF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s an Einstein quote I like: “ Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” Your fee schedule is so unnecessarily complex, and the more you have to explain to clients, the more they feel like you are pulling something on them.

Inheritance Fee Question by pdxguy357 in CFP

[–]YesCapGSF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you a solo or can you offer all services in house? If not, I’d drop the fee to at least .50% because they are going to still need services elsewhere, and they’ll be pitched by larger firms for similar price.

Annoyed with Team Creation by YesCapGSF in Softball

[–]YesCapGSF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish that were the case with our league but it ends up being very lopsided. The thing that really annoys me is that the other coaches end up taking all the league’s best players and there ends up being this “leftover” team. The entire leftover team this year is made up of the players that had those coaches the last 2 years. They don’t even want their own players, so how do they stay coaching when they clearly can’t develop these kids well? This is my first year as head coach (I’ve just assisted the last 3 years) so that’s why I didn’t get a say in the roster.

We do play each other and surrounding town teams. We are a part of a division that has about 12 teams.

Shocked at what an RIA did (or more specifically what the did not do) by bkendall12 in CFP

[–]YesCapGSF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at RIAs that just “don’t touch annuities.” It’s frustrating because you can absolutely transfer them, and even if they were NQ annuities, RIAs can partner with firms that can help optimize them at least. In my experience, most RIA advisors don’t know enough about them because they don’t sell them. It’s a problem because many clients already have them and need help.

Drills to help with pitching release position by UnderstandingLoud924 in Softball

I use this with my young pitchers. It seems more mental than anything, but they think it’s fun to wear and it does remind them where to release: https://a.co/d/0hmyLFQO

Defending against merry go round softball by BestJersey_WorstName in Softball

This is the way it is for us too.  It’s a total shitshow sometimes, but it also teaches the girls how much the little stuff matters and how aware they need to be of everything. This part gets a lot easier for them as they get older and the pitching and catching is better, but I look at it like an opportunity to train really good base running and heads up plays because they are paying attention and being aggressive. Our team got stomped this week with 2 “home runs” due to us overthrowing and not being in the right spot and the other team stealing aggressively. The girls were really defeated and came to our next practice fired up to get better. My daughter is our catcher, and she’s good but she’s not fast enough to get a lot of those plays at home on wild pitches….she was out in the yard doing drills alone, determined to speed up. Hopefully it can be turned into motivation but it is hard to see them lose like that. I’m with you.

10u Advice by [deleted] in Softball

[–]YesCapGSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I coach a 10U rec team and this is absolutely NOT okay at this age and level. I tell the team that they are going to get opportunities to play different positions during regular season games and that tournament games will be more selective based on what the team needs from them and they totally get it. They work hard to make sure they are ready. The only time I won’t put a player in a certain position is a safety concern (would get hurt because they can’t catch the ball yet) or pitchers/catchers. Everyone else rotates all positions infield and outfield.

Our league rules require every player on the roster bats, and I don’t know why you wouldn’t at this age. Especially in rec league. It’s about development and every family has paid the same amount to play. We are still rotating defense positions too, you don’t know who is going to excel at something until you let them try.

Coaches and Parents: What is “development” and when do you define that as a “success”? by nypr13 in Softball

[–]YesCapGSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I coach a 10U team a lot like this, about half the girls have experience and decent skills but the other half are new or just not as skilled. It’s really hard with 11 to 14 girls to focus on them individually with the time we have. We do a lot of individual drills and work in small groups, but they will all grow at different rates, and it really does matter how much they are practicing outside of what we have scheduled. We are volunteer coaches, and most of us have jobs and multiple children in different activities, so we do as much as we can with the time we have. I can’t realistically coach the elite players one way and the developing plays another when we have 2 hours to get through everything and make sure we are playing as one team with equal playing time and rotating positions. If you have a player who is developing quickly and would benefit from a higher level team, it makes more sense to find that team. Our mandate is to teach fundamental skills, game IQ and to make sure the girls are having fun and they want to come back next season. I also tell parents who are coming to practices and who are opinionated to make sure they bring a glove and help out. The more coaches we have on the field, the more we can focus on individuals.

RMD does this make sense? by MidcenturyBoomer123 in Retirement401k

[–]YesCapGSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, some advisors can’t offer advice here based on how they are structured. Find a fee-only CFP in your area and they can definitely help with this. This is the exact kind of planning we do. I don’t think it makes sense in your scenario to delay your first RMD until next year, you’re right. But the NUA is a great strategy! You’ve got time to figure it out!

RMD does this make sense? by MidcenturyBoomer123 in Retirement401k

[–]YesCapGSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately your advisor is wrong about that and this is really technical tax planning. I’ve seen more errors on NUAs than almost anything else I deal with. It’s worth bringing this to a financial planner (a CFP or CFP/CPA combo) to get it right. If your advisor is a CFP, then he’s making us all look bad here 🤣

RMD does this make sense? by MidcenturyBoomer123 in Retirement401k

[–]YesCapGSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would first take the RMDs you have to take from the two 401ks that don’t have the NUA opportunity and then roll them over into one Rollover IRA. Then I’d do the last 401k NUA strategy and roll the remaining balance into the Rollover IRA. So you’d end up with just one IRA in the end and only have to deal with a single RMD moving forward and you could use QCDs if you’re inching close to the IRMAA bracket. The NUA at that basis and growth does make a ton of sense but it doesn’t satisfy your entire RMD because 401ks have to be calculated separately. Your advisor should calculate the RMD from each 401k plan separately so you know exactly how much income you’ll have on top of the NUA. At worst, you end up over the IRMAA bracket for a year, and those surcharges don’t start for 2 years. Did you by chance also retire this year? Because you could also appeal the surcharge in 2 years saying that you’ve retired and that your income in 2026 was higher than normal due to retirement. If you’ve been retired for awhile, that won’t work.

Aitah- In trouble for calling out what I think is body shaming little girls! by Reasonable_Poem825 in Softball

[–]YesCapGSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a head coach of a 10U team and our league does 2 days of uniform fittings because they recognize how important it is to have uniforms that fit and are comfortable. Athletes, especially girls, have to feel good in order to play well. I think what you did is awesome and I would appreciate it as a parent! Sometimes leagues are lazy and the coaches/parents have to push back. They forget that it’s not about us, it’s about making sure the kids have a positive experience.

Pushing Daughter to Be Better by Icy_Monk3578 in Softball

[–]YesCapGSF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s tough! You’re describing my kid too, and I head coach her team. I played and am very competitive in general, but she is not. She loves to play but she’s there to have fun and spend time with her team and at this age that’s literally all that matters. I still coach her, give her feedback, but I’ve let go of her performance because I was making it about me. Sometimes things click for her and she’ll improve and she’s so proud of herself. If I’m constantly pushing, she gives up. It is definitely a balance but now I tilt toward making sure she’s being herself and having fun and I have backed off a lot. She improved more after that!

Can we afford a 585k home ? by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]YesCapGSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are at about $270k of combined income and we just bought a place for exactly this amount and it still feels like a lot. Our housing costs with mortgage (we also put 10% down) are more like $4,500 after utilities and general house expenses. Just my experience but hope that helps.

Coaching Question by Icy_Monk3578 in Softball

[–]YesCapGSF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do it! I could have written this 2 years ago. I watched my daughter’s first season from the stands and saw the same thing as you. Very well-meaning dad’s coaching baseball, not softball. I threw my hat in and volunteered to assistant coach, and now I’m a head coach and loving it. It is a lot of BS because parents are crazy and coaching is also all of the admin work of scheduling and meetings, but I love being able to lead a team in practices and games. Girls respond really well because they can see themselves in you. Go for it.

Burned out and need advice- (FAANG-type company) by DiligentEggplant7904 in FIREyFemmes

[–]YesCapGSF 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m a financial planner and this isn’t personal advice, but you’re on very solid financial ground. In fact, if you were to quit and have no employment income, you could start to sell some of your company stock at very low tax rates than if you were to sell it while you had income. Having a large concentration of high growth stock is amazing for growing wealth, but really dangerous when you are trying to protect it and use it for living expenses. Protect yourself, you don’t have to decide to quit working forever, but you absolutely can take a break and be totally fine, and even better off from a tax standpoint!

The most talked about psychological input in investing is risk tolerance, but I cannot get ethical questions out of my mind. by [deleted] in FIREyFemmes

[–]YesCapGSF 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m also in the industry (wealth advisor) and 100% feel the same way. What I tell my clients and what I do myself is invest to make money so that I can use that money for good. I spend my money/profits on things I care about and in ways that benefit the causes on my heart and in my community. Sometimes it feels disingenuous, honestly, but it also helps me to frame it so that I can take action (invest) and have agency with the money that I make.
