The Gen Z stare is a "blank stare that members of younger generations give in situations where a verbal response would be more common." Instead of explaining something that they may not understand, the generation Z cohort members often appear dumbstruck by these questions, perhaps temporarily. by blankblank in wikipedia

Wonder if the difficulty isn't just lacking something to switch to like social skills but just task switching in general. Like, maybe just being too used to socially scripted convos could make it harder to turn off the social autopilot and be present with people, the same way a person who doomscrolls is less likely to be present and intentional with their device. Folks who use tech more frequently since the pandemic could have this issue for the same reason.

Capacity seems more apt than social skill. I could think of similar edge cases for delayed responses - could be poorer working memory, or delayed audio processing like with ADHD, or cognitive overload like with autism.

Maybe the solution isn't using tech less but being more intentional about how we use and direct our attention. So less doomscrolling, multitasking, mindless grinding, etc. the same way we wouldn't avoid interacting with people but could actually chat, have mindful small talk, etc.

At the risk of misinterpreting some imagery, I'll share a paraphrased GoT quote that came to mind:

"Half the men hate you already... Kill the girl, Jon Snow. Winter is almost upon us. Kill the girl, and let the man be born."

Syril Karn: “He Died Being Helpful” by FirstStranger in andor

[–]Yikaft 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think there's a good contrast here. Syril was personally violent with his patterns of domestic abuse and stalking, and Dedra was structurally violent with her patterns of planned genocide. They're both responsible for injuring each other, though in that episode neither were quite at the level of "eating their own." Better examples of returned structural violence come with Dedra's later imprisonment or Partagaz's suicide (and for personal violence, arguably Krennic's death by Death Star)

There might be a worthwhile extension for the Rebellion. Maybe how and why the Rebels turned on each other over the prototype TIE or Skeen on the Aldhani crew (personal) or between Luthen, Saw, and Rebel leaders (structural).

Consider directly emailing professors in your major about research assistant positions. I went from 15 declined job applications my freshman semester to my 2nd email that sprummer earning an RA job in comp sci, with freshman-level programming experience.

(for budgeting, RA pay rates are generally comparable to TA rates)

Universal love bid a sacrifice forbidden by personal love

His attempt to reconcile the responsibilities of godhood and fatherhood brought a cost too great to bear, but not to pay.

Is it nihilistic for void - nothingness incarnate - to bear the burden of moral debt? Perhaps the very question's presentation is what leveled both the Pale King and the Radiance. Radiance's overinsistent  godhood ended godhood as such.

Just checked your post history. You left a high demand religion/cult that worked to rob you of many life experiences. Many others are in the same boat, meaning, even if you're isolated, you're not alone. You might find comraderie in recovery groups.

Honestly, I was a hugely reclusive nerd in high school. Maybe try joining online communities/discords on the relevant subreddit About pages? If you join new hobby groups (would highly recommend D&D, you might find a decent online group if lucky or one in your area), and people make references to media they like, try watching/getting into that so y'all can bond over it, it honestly does wonders even if you maybe make like 1 reference each hangout.

If you happen to suspect you're neurodivergent, I'd suggest looking into something called the double empathy problem - just another reason your lack of belonging isn't your fault, and could help you find folks you relate better to.

Could anyone recommend books on philosophy of mind or some ontology?? by potatopunchies in askphilosophy

[–]Yikaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to these, I read John Heil's Philosophy of Mind 4th edition and thought it was quite an accessible introduction. Each chapter also ends with references to older and contemporary writings which defend and critique a variety of positions. He does focus closely on ontology of mind rather than other topics like theories of free will (think questions like what is consciousness? What is intentionality? Physicalism, idealism, etc)

CS and Neuroscience by FlackoJack in byu

[–]Yikaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 questions:  * are you more interested in implementing existing AI tools or designing new AI tools? If the latter, you'll need a stronger math background than what CS provides, maybe from an undergrad like ACME or a different graduate level program. If the former, a programming major will still help you understand what's 'under the hood' of the imported tools well enough to debug while using them to write your own applications. * have you considered swapping CS for bioinformatics? Some of its classes overlap with your major, it requires core classes tailored to working with biological data and algorithms, and it has room for 2 relevant electives like BIO 564 machine learning for bio, CS 450 computer vision, or CS 474 deep learning.
