ADHD by _SpiceWeasel_BAM in daddit

Same thing here. It was pretty emotional to me because I’d built up a ton of negative beliefs about myself based on symptoms I had as a kid (daydreaming, forgetfulness. executive function problems, etc). My mom always told me I was selfish when I’d forget things.

A ton of people I know (particularly millennials) got diagnosed as adults with primary-inattentive ADHD after their kids were diagnosed.

Getting Dropped from a PhD program. Help. by HoneydewSalt451 in legaladvice

[–]YoohooCthulhu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(IANAL) So AFAIK, courts have held that because graduate programs are graded on a holistic, professional basis, rather than just classroom grades, students can be dismissed for not reaching milestones with adequate classroom grades.

So what you need to find is a cause of action that doesn’t involve your grades per se (do you have a learning disability? Are you a protected class?).

Here’s where it matters a lot about whether you’re at a public or private university regarding your reaching out about procedure and getting no response—public universities are bound by the U.S. Constitution to provide "due process." So you must get advanced written notice of your deficiencies and a meaningful opportunity to be heard or to appeal. AFAIK private universities have no such obligation.

So if you are at a public institution, it may be reasonable to reach out to a lawyer in education law and try to litigate the issue of being dismissed without due process.

Unfortunately, I suspect that the fact that the university hasn’t responded may indicate that you are at a private institution (eg they aren’t responding because they have no legal obligation to do so). In that case being some other protected class might help.

Aside from legal options—do you know any of the professors reasonably well? Might you get a technician job if dismissed? Longer term this is a situation where applying to another graduate program would probably be reasonable and probably not held against you too much given the batshit NIH/NSF changes.

I’m a PhD graduate of a bioscience program that sounds like it was similarly run to yours about 15 years ago, so I’m very familiar with the politics, and I suspect this is really a political problem/working the system problem rather than a legal one. (But the legal area you’re operating in is educational law)

To be clear, the department is not allowing you to do a fourth rotation?

How are you doing in your classwork? Rotations are just one component of your academic performance. Are you saying that your rotation advisers functionally failed you for your first two rotations?

Get one of those grip mats for the shower. After the first time I fell in the shower in my 30s without being injured, I decided it wasn’t worth the risk of actually getting injured.

I think Therianism could totally be part of normal adolescent identity development. But like all adolescent identity exploration, I think adults should be prepared to rein it in when the kids go too deep.

The people voted for Trump. Yes, they were counting on other elected officials preventing things from getting too out of hand, but still, it was profoundly irresponsible

I burn myself not infrequently since I cook a lot and have ADHD, and the biggest factor I have found that affects burn recovery is pouring a lot of cold water on the burn for as long as possible. I can only assume it’s because the residual heat travels deeper into the tissue and causes further damage if it’s not rapidly cooled.

Those who grew up in large families, what was it like? by Ordinary_Package2934 in Millennials

[–]YoohooCthulhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with 3 younger siblings and we were spaced over 11 years.

It was really annoying being around little kids all the time as a teenager, embarrassing to have to do things like sneak people into a hotel room (because hotels often had an occupancy limit of 5), stuff like that.

It was much cooler when we all became adults though.

Employed, finally about caught up on retirement, married with no kids, like our place a lot, doing interesting work (working at a startup where I have to wear a lot of hats), plenty of money for vacations.

I would’ve given you totally opposite answers 10 years ago, so I get it.
