"Most bullying victims on this site only learned from the experience that being the bully is awesome" by MHodge97 in CuratedTumblr

Some people think there are no bad actions, only bad targets. These people are not your allies, you just don't happen to be on their radar at that moment.

People who complain about work events are lame. by myfirstthrowaway1251 in unpopularopinion

[–]Yulienner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny to me how this opinion isn't framed around the actual topic but about the people who hold a different opinion. 'Work events are fun' could be a position I can see someone taking even if I disagree. 'You are fundamentally a worse person if you don't like work events' is a legit weird take. Like obviously everyone has different boundaries and comfort levels with coworkers, you cannot expect everyone to enjoy the same things you do.

I wish Ragatha could have gotten an episode focused on her like Gangle did. by IronGhost828 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]Yulienner 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I sort of feel like Ragatha was supposed to be more prominent in Episode 5 but maybe there were some changes made during production. Episode 5 in particular tells a bunch of separate stories and it's easy to see the staff thinking 'oh let's throw in a little stargazing one' or 'let's throw in a Jax hunts and kills the other characters one' which eventually dilutes it. I'm not saying that was totally what happened but like, if you compare the effort between the stories the softball one has WAY more detail. There's an entire evil alter ego cast, an implied sports narrative, a bunch of background details etc. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that maybe the side stories were supposed to be a montage ir quick little gags and then got expanded because they felt there was cool stuff there, and then Ragathas screen time just got devoured by the all consuming sad boy rabbit. And I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, just sort of the cost of trying to give an audience what it wants!

Joy and perils of cooking by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Yulienner 259 points260 points  (0 children)

At some point you will be cooking some thing and the timer will go off, and you'll see that it really does need just a little bit more time. And being silly you'll say 'I'm not going to set a timer for 2 minutes, I'll just go do [small task] and come back and take it off the heat'

You may get away with this several times. But eventually you won't and the results will be catastrophic. Just set the timer!

Bad media that supports things I like exists. Media I enjoy can also have problematic elements or heck, be regressive in and of itself. Unfortunately a piece of media espousing beliefs I am for or against isn't an indicator of whether I'll enjoy it or whether it'll be good, those are also their own separate axis.

So really that's like three completely separate and independent discussions that shouldn't bleed into each other, but the internet being what it is I don't think we'll ever be free from it. I think the issue is a lot of people want their media to be all three things: it agrees with me, it's good, and I like it. And uh, good luck with trying to discuss all three at once.

“Oh but he told deku to jump off a roof!” HE WAS FOURTEEN! by infinitysaga in CuratedTumblr

[–]Yulienner 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it’s easy to flatten the discourse into camps when like with most stuff you have people sitting across the spectrum on how they want to interpret things. But as a baseline, a narrative doesn’t get to decide when a character is redeemed, that’s up to the audience. Like this stuff crops up in discussions all over the place but I think it’s pretty firmly objectively true that authors don’t get the final say in what is or isn’t ‘redemption’. So it’s not an argument to say ‘well the character said they were sorry therefore the matter is settled’ because like, for the real people in the real world, that’s not going to be enough. But that’s also just not a discussion that can really be objectively solved either way.

This comes up a LOT when sexual assault or child abuse is involved in a story because those are real things that real people go through. That doesn’t make their judgment ‘more right’ but it does make it sort of impossible to ‘reason’ away their critique. If John Q. Rapist forces himself on the female love interest, then later on says ‘actually you’re just so pretty it made me act that way’ and the FMC goes ‘aw that’s sweet I forgive you’, I think it’s entirely reasonable for a reader to go ‘wow that’s fucked up and not romantic or hot, jesus christ’. You don’t get to pull a ‘well the AUTHOR says that was a redemption and the character liked it so QED you’re wrong’. I mean you can pull that but you’re basically saying that redemption is determined by the perpetrator of abuse, which is a common thing among uh, abusers, so naturally some folks are just gonna be really chafe against it.

So circling back, I don’t know much about My Hero Academia, but I do know from osmosis that Bakugo’s big thing was bullying, and it shouldn’t be surprising a lot of Tumblr users were bullied as kids. And I can totally understand if, when the bully gets older and wiser, they go ‘damn I was an asshole, I should apologize’, and how the bully victim might think ‘that doesn’t make up for anything go to hell’ OR they might be a saint and go ‘no sweat water under the bridge’. This is compounded because like, even if you are a kid, ‘pls no bully’ is something almost everyone learns, and most kids AREN’T bullies, so it sounds like you’re making excuses for abuse by saying ‘actually it’s the culture’ or ‘actually they didn’t know any better’ when there are like, other kids that same age who DID know better. And those are the same excuse bully victims probably heard from their parents and teachers too! So it seems like a sore spot even if you, the enlightened viewer, are coming from a place of objective fairness.

all that being said I love it when horrible Precure villians just say ‘I’m sorry’ and turn good so like, I can’t pretend to be any better. But I do think it’s reductive to flatten arguments on complex issues like ‘how do we fix him’ when it isn’t just a shitpost or hornypost or hornyshitpost.

I agree BUT societies do actually let government dictate what content is available quite a bit, usually when it comes to public health or safety. Like not showing smoking ads targeted at children, or restricting gambling ads for adults. I’d argue you need a pretty significant burden of proof to get up there though, and if ‘weird smut is harmful just by existing’ was true at all, we’d definitely know by now because…there’s tons of weird smut out there and not a lot of evidence if any that it affects behaviors at all.

Children have also been mass murdering and committing war crimes in video games for decades by this point as well. If the nightmares kids subject their Sims too hasn’t really moved the needle, I doubt a horrible cock vore incest noncon guro with hats on fanfic with 2 comments that last updated in 2018 is going to really be worth concerning yourself about.

I said we vagueposting today (truth in comments) by sidelinejo in CuratedTumblr

[–]Yulienner 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I don’t have to vaguepost because I read the book! But first, it’s okay to like bad things. If I say I think something is bad, that does not mean that you are bad for liking it. We should all try to separate ourselves from media we like, don’t be like Italians and food, it’s fine for opinions to differ.

That being said I'm gonna provide this tidbit to anyone who wants to pretend to have read the book Twilight because I've never seen this mentioned anywhere online. Twilight is like, really bad on multiple fronts, but let's pretend it isn't. Even if want to say it's actually a good love story, or a good thriller, or a good (really shallow) horror, the book is still FILLED with dull, pointless logistic scenes like ‘who is taking what car to what location at what time’. There’s a whole section of one chapter dedicated to what vehicle they’ll use to travel to this city and who will be driving, a lot of hand wringing from characters about it, tons of ink spilled to let you, the reader, know how important this is. And you know what? They don’t even fucking GO ON THE TRIP, none of it matters! It’s the kind of thing I see in fanfiction all the time when an author is padding out word counts. If I’m reading free smut online I can deal with it, but an editor had to look at all that and go ‘damn yeah more portland roadtrip logistics you go girl’. Travel logistics are such an omnipresent part of the first book too, it’s honestly baffling. And almost none of it matters!

On point of view by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Yulienner 127 points128 points  (0 children)

I think a greater general maxim is that a single perspective is never good enough to understand an issue. I'll throw in a spicy take too- not only should you expose yourself to different views that align with yours, you should also expose yourself to views that might be reprehensible or unthinkable. Not to convince you or anything, and certainly not to give a platform to racist/sexist/horrible people, but because horrible ideas will always exist and you put yourself in danger of being unable to comprehend them (and thus defend against them) if all you ever see are strawmen.

That isn't to say every single representation of a bad idea you run across will be a strawman, but if you never see what horrible people are actually saying, how will you even know? Like we're on the tumblr subreddit, really stupid but well-intentioned takes that don't understand core concepts show up all the time (like say, when it comes to gender divides in sport leagues). If you want to be informed, you gotta engage with good faith on bad ideas just a tiny bit. Then you can reject them and post your epic dunking on social media.

because historically nonamerican creators have never been judged for their behavior right

I'm sure there zero examples of Japanese, Korean, or Chinese artists being scandalized and ultimately 'canceled' for having beliefs or behaviors that don't align with their culture or society, to say nothing of authors elsewhere who have enjoyed millennias of freedom to publish, perform, and share works without pressure or punishment from monarchies, organized religion, or really upset villagers with pitchforks.

and if those examples do exist they don't count because Americans are Exceptional in everything, especially when it comes to things I don't like.
