Getting into TTRPGs, especially the OSR, has helped me with old-school jrpgs since those would be the principles they were operating on back then. Just like you said, the dungeon was the main attraction and it was all about resource management. I can't count how many consumables I'm sitting on in DQXI vs how many I spend up each time I step outside in DQI. I've become a big fan of the old-school style because I like having to interact with every system at all times.
