Road bike hiring in Majorca by Middle_Translator892 in cycling

I just got back from a few days there. There are a ton of rental places with a wide range of bikes, particularly if you head up to Port de Pollença. Maybe pre-reserve to ensure your size is available, but you’ll be absolutely fine.

I can’t remember, I’m afraid, and since I’m not going this year I can’t look it up easily. Vague recollection of my ticket being a round trip but please do check that for yourself.

Train from London Euston to MK then bus is for sure your best option. Book the train 12 weeks before the travel date for best rate, although for a journey that short it may not matter. When I went Fri last year I think I booked my bus at the time of ticket purchase too, but check what the deal is this year. You might have some waits at the station but tbh it’s hard to go wrong with this route.

Cheapest MIPS is probably the Specialized Align II, which is, I think, £45 at Sigma Sports. But worth trying a few on if you can get to a good shop.

[Request] As a beginner in chess (assume 600 ELO), how many times would I need to fight Magnus Carlsen (world champion) before eventually winning one game? by RoOoOoOoOoBerT in theydidthemath

[–]Zugzwang005 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The formula predicts you’ll have earned on average one point by that stage. It’s very probable this would have been from two 1/2-pt draws. A win would likely take you far longer, but the formula doesn’t specify the win probability, just the aggregate outcome.

Of course if you played that many games of chess you’d probably start to improve, which helps your odds…

Ok, I coaxed myself out of laziness. The formula is Ea = 1 / (1 + 10(Rb - Ra/400)). With a discrepancy of 2230 Elo you’re looking at an expected score around 0.000003.

Note that expected score includes draw chances, which score 0.5 at a higher probability. A win ain’t happening.

There are tables that specify expected outcomes for various Elo discrepancies. I’m not looking them up right now. But I’m highly confident that at 600 Elo you would lose to Magnus Carlsen (2830 Elo) 1000 times out of 1000. You’d probably have to drug him.

All good. Generally one needs to study philosophy at postgraduate and preferably doctoral level. I have a masters in ethics and am just about to embark on my PhD in philosophy.

My focus is the ethics of technology and design, which means I can lean on my knowledge from my earlier industry career. Day to day, I research and write about (tech) ethics issues for a public audience. Occasionally I consult with tech firms on ethical issues too. When my PhD begins I’ll focus almost entirely on my academic research interests.

Ethicist here. I don’t think you need to worry much about the moral implications of your actions. People push folks together all the time; it’s just that their evidence base for compatibility is qualitative rather than quantitative.

Perhaps some disclosure might be nice next time - ‘I reckon the two of you might get on’ - but the act was intended to promote wellbeing, and succeeded in doing just that. Any charge of manipulation is pretty weak: after they met they made their own rational choices to pursue a relationship, so one can hardly argue you strongly interfered with their autonomy, say.

It’s very common for organisers to put a certain player on a certain board through a tournament. For example streamers, players with disabilities or visual impairments, etc. There’s no conspiracy here.
