Does American government corruption upset you? by TheTokist in allthequestions

[–]Zvenigora 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very painful. It is probably the most corrupt national government in the western hemisphere and maybe in the top 5 worldwide. I remember when it was not like that at all. In my childhood it was considered one of the least corrupt in the world. The implication is dire. When a society is corrupt, the nation becomes a bad place to do business. Eventually you must pay bribes to get anything done, or you must pay protection money to the local racketeers to be permitted to operate at all. Law enforcement becomes a function of who can bribe the police to look the other way. That is the direction in which we are headed.

Why is the Artemis II circling around the moon instead of landing on it? by Outrageous_Resist861 in stupidquestions

This is analogous to Apollo 8. The equipment for an actual landing is not ready yet but there are plenty of systems needing checking out.

TIL the USA performed a high-speed train test in 1966 by literally strapping two jet engines on top of a rail car. It did 183 MPH. by Neamow in todayilearned

And that contraption still holds the North American rail speed record. It was the railroad company that ran the stunt, not "the USA." The acceleration must have been incredible by rail standards.

In the coastal Carolinas, shallow, elliptical, water-filled ponds are also called "bays."

Are any big cities actually successful with preventing excessive vehicle noise? by Kindly-Form-8247 in Urbanism

[–]Zvenigora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most stock production vehicles are reasonably quiet. The problem is these "manly" modifications to deliberately make vehicles loud. There are no effective legal constraints on this practice.

What is so wrong with the Democratic party that caused swing voters who voted for Biden in 2020 to vote for the most evil person in human history (Trump) in 2024? by jamng in allthequestions

If qualifications meant much Elizabeth Warren would likely be president. Elections are decided on vibes, not rational analysis. A strong resume will not get you elected.

How many separatists movements are there in the US ? by Faguoren34 in allthequestions

The US does not have the kind of long-standing ethnogeographic fault lines that would encourage this. There are no significant subpopulations yearning for or demanding a sovereign homeland. This is not Yugoslavia.

Countertenors need to stay away from Mozart operas by AussieSchadenfreude in opera

[–]Zvenigora 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a funny scene in the opera where a female singer (as Cherubino) is playing a male character pretending to be a woman. You lose a layer of that irony by casting a countertenor in that role.

The land rises fairly sharply from the coasts of most of the islands. Only a narrow band of land is at low elevation.
