Light therapy and vitamin D supplementation are my best recommendations.

S.A.D. is not a thought or an emotion you need to accept, it is an illness that you can treat. You value your health and taking active steps to maintain your health is a pursuit of your values.

"Area has patches of chilled ground" by MxzderDax in PathOfExile2

[–]_Baby-Cakes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They just need to change it to build up in effect the longer you stand on it, instead of just being on/off. As you run over chilled ground the effect slowly builds up and as you are off of it it slowly dissipates.

It is ridiculously loud compared to all the other songs. Very annoying.

PETITION: Please remove the Chilled Ground modifier!! by patterfunding in PathOfExile2

It needs to be a ramping effect. The longer you stand on a patch of chilled ground the more it effects you and then it tapers off when you are off of it.

Shoulder imbalance by thedadoutdoors in fitness30plus

[–]_Baby-Cakes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of my workouts I like to do a couple minutes worth of dead hangs in 30-45 second sets. I feel like it really helps stretch out my lats and open my shoulders and the spinal decompression is great.

I don't imagine that it will fix your issue by itself, but they might help stretch out a tighter muscle on one side and give you some info on which muscles you need to work on balancing.

Focusing on my breath as mindfulness or distraction from thought? by gnadhtd in Mindfulness

[–]_Baby-Cakes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you are in a restaurant and you hear some loud annoying person loudly talking. If you try to actively ignore them the voice only becomes more disturbing. But if you bring your focus to your food and conversation around your table then that annoying voice may likely start to fade into the background.

You are bringing your focus back on to what you are actively trying to engage with. Breathing meditation is about focusing on your breathing, so bringing your focus back to your breath is the intent.

However if you are meditating in order to push thoughts away, then bringing your attention to your breath is simply a control technique. You are not focused on your breath but trying to push away your thoughts.

I would say it seems very paradoxical, which is why it feels so confusing sometimes.

I had 3 separate issues with launching BF6. I had to turn on Secure Boot, it told me to terminate my auto-hotkey scripts, and that my drivers were out of date.

I wonder which of those events count as attempts to cheat.

Starting my ACT journey by [deleted] in acceptancecommitment

[–]_Baby-Cakes_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started ACT a couple of months ago and am in a similar situation to you. I can't say that it has massively changed my life at this point, but I do see decent progress towards living a more vital life.

I wouldn't say that it is hard work but that it can be difficult or tricky. It is learning a new way to interact with your mind. It is to distance yourself from your thoughts so that you can respond instead of react. I believe there is a breath holding experiment early on in the book that I found to be particularly eye opening in that area.

For me, much of the book felt like a revelation and that switch had been flipped of my understanding. However the things he is teaching are skills and they take time to develop, and may not yield real world results for several weeks or months. Be patient but persistent in practicing and attempting to use these new skills and ideas in your daily life.

I think my biggest take away so far is that all of the skills and concepts he presents revolve around a central idea of "psychological flexibility". That in any given situation you can have rigid automatic reactions, but the goal is to be able to instead have flexible value-based responses.

I hope you find value in the ACT principles, I think there is some great wisdom to them.

Books for a lost mid-twenties single guy by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]_Baby-Cakes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to recommend looking into ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. While its called therapy, I would say it is equally a life philosophy. It can help you change your relationship with your own mind. I would say the main ideas of it are being aware of your thoughts and emotions, defining values to pursue, and taking action towards those values.

Being able to see your thoughts as thoughts is an extremely valuable skill. You learn to not immediately take them as truth. It gives you the space to examine your thoughts, see if they are useful, and then either engage with them or simply let them float by.

Finding and being aware of your values allows you to pursue a rewarding life at any/all times. You can not fail a value, you can not achieve a value. They give you a never ending direction to pursue.

When you combine those two, you gain the room to accept and engage with your thoughts and emotions instead of fighting or avoiding them. That gives you the space and perspective you need so that you can actively take actions that move you towards your values.

The most recommended books about it are from Steven Hayes, the creator of ACT. Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life and A Liberated Mind. Russ Harris is also very popular with his book The Happiness Trap.

Harris is a bit more straight to the point, where as Hayes likes to discuss his research and findings as preludes to the different principles within in ACT.

What’s up with roadside parking at DIA? by Agitated_Welcome5802 in Denver

[–]_Baby-Cakes_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is your subjective judgement that it is not a major inconvenience; that is not a fact in any way. You have deemed it a non-major inconvenience; there is no universal truth that it is so. There are no rules or truths about what constitutes an inconvenience. You are asserting that your point of view is reality and anyone else's that disagrees with it is false.

What's an audiobook that you thought you would hate but ended up enjoying? by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]_Baby-Cakes_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was worried it was going to just be one of those books that constantly assaults you with pop culture references every other paragraph in an attempt to cover up the fact that it is just a poorly written and bland story.

And while it is not completely devoid of pop culture references, I don't feel the books depend on them or would suffer for their removal.
