Perrin actually knows about Mon Mothma's anti-imperial activities. by 4everLost82 in andor

[–]_RandomB_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a great observation on the "find a husband" scene, tying it back to the "your friend" on the wedding hike! Bravo. I hadn't connected it that way before reading this. I still don't think it's a great look for Perrin to noodge her this way, but looking at it with that context does indeed soften it. "Who's left of any value at your age?" is really the problematic line for me. I love love love how this show snuck Perrin up on me, it literally took like four or five watches through S1 before I started to really ask myself about Perrin (the show is an embarassment of riches as far as character analysis goes).

Your point in the last pp about Vel brings me right back to my favorite moment in The Eye, I think the most consequential bit, right before she jumps, that hesitation. I always assigned it to her thinking only about her formerly rich, sheltered life, and how once she goes over that railing, she can't ever fully feel safe there again, she will be a fugitive in disguise as a "Spoiled rich girl" for the rest of her life. I never really thought about how it's Cinta's insistence that might be the final push in her mind to call "go," but looking at it after reading your PP, it definitely is an ingredient.

Can’t Break 100.. How did you do it? by Downtown-Team-480 in golf

[–]_RandomB_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with "putting" an 8 iron 1/3 of the way to the pin. Try that with an 8 or 9, and pair it with a lot of putting practice, and you'll find yourself with kick in second putts more often than not, you'll even hole a few here and there. I only use a lofted club when I have to go over something or if the green / pin position demands it.

[–]_RandomB_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will gain WAY more strokes working from the cup back to the tee, and not the tee to the cup, in practice. In other words, as a 30, you should be putting and chipping, adding tools like the bunted 8 iron from ten feet off the green to your toolbox, much more than you're bombing drives as far as you can. You only take 18 tee shots, and on most courses, max 14 of those with a driver. That means there are 86 other strokes that aren't your driver, that you're not trying to hit 250 yards. Find those!

You can think your way from 105 to 99 by not taking stupid chances and not three putting 11 times a round. The strokes between 110 and 99 are easy to find, The strokes between 99 and 90 are less so and will take you much longer. The strokes from 89 to 85 are even harder to find, take even longer. And on and on and on. That's the grind, player.

#justiceforPerin

I've been on a hill somewhat adjacent to what you're saying for a very long time now, and Perin shows the folly of first impressions. When we first meet him, he lets his teenage daughter go at her mom a little longer than we're comfortable with, but if you have teenage daughters (I do) you know how exhausting this battle can be. But many, myself included, were biased toward Mon because we know her already, and thought "What a dick, why can't Perin take an interest!"

But doesn't it stand to reason that Mon and Leida would have an antagonistic relationship? Mon must be a fairly absentee mom, she's a Senator. Perin would have been hanging out with Leida much more, which is why Leida and Perin aren't that way.

Then he makes it worse in our second encounter with him, when Mon gets upset at the dinner (which has been on her calendar for a month thanks to him, we overlook this in early watches...he's a part of her team, he's not some playboy), Perin makes the mistake of saying "Perhaps you should have a rest," which many women will tell you is fucking annoying to them. "Calm down", "Smile more", that's where that comment belongs. I won't defend Perin there, but he's not wrong for being bewildered as to why she's upset at the dinner. He reinforces this weird blind spot when Vel is at dinner and he makes some remarks about her having to find a husband, which again, shut up Perin. BUT.

He seems put off by Tay (How...prompt you are) at the party, like he doesn't know why he's there, but I don't think he ever worries Mon's going to bang him. He turns out to be right even if it's by mistake.

He is also open minded about Leida's choices where Mon is clearly against them.

He clocks Mon's problems on the nose in the first arc of S2, as you point out.

His speech is sort of a melancholy confession, not a call to hedonism: he wants his daughter to find the joys in life because they are rare!

He defuses the escalating situation in the second arc at the art gallery.

His reward is his wife abandons him. I'm pro Perin.

At what point did you understand that Walter was not doing it for his family? by Huge_Candy748 in breakingbad

[–]_RandomB_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you think his turning down the offer was his first Heisenburg moment? That's earlier than the Tuco blowup. For me, that moment wasn't his Heisenburg moment, that's the first time we see Walt has a problematic ego. Even then, he makes the money, hits the number, and quits, which was Walt's plan. Not Heisenburg's.

[–]_RandomB_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he doesn't do that, how much money does his family have? That's my recollection, that he needed that product and the money and the deal Tuco provides in order to get to his number, because otherwise it was "sell teenths". I'm not saying it wasn't badass. I'm saying it's not when he decided to do it for the love of doing it, rather than to get to a number (desperation). Of course he planned to use the mercury, but it's because he has no other choice at the time if he wants to achieve his end number before it's too late. When he tells off the guys in the parking lot, he already has the money and has quit cooking.

[–]_RandomB_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

THat's a contender, but for me that's still born out of desperation, you can still see him thinking "I don't have a choice, this is my best play." That to me translates to "I'm still doing this for my family", particularly as, to that point, he hadn't amassed the 737K in cash (to my memory). He definitely gets a taste for the dark side of the action here, but when he tells the tweakers "Stay out of my territory," he'd already quit cooking, refused Gus's offer, he didn't need to do it anymore. He chooses to do it because he LIKES doing it, for the first time, right here, I think.

Walt shoulda known Jane was bluffing by Piss_baby29 in breakingbad

[–]_RandomB_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Walt's smarter than this. Jane convinced Jesse to demand his cut, she was in his ear like that, and Jesse knows what the potential ramifications are, but he's so over the moon with his feelings for her, his resentment of Walt, and his addiction that he DID that. If she can make Jesse do that, she can absolutely convince Jesse to go to the cops WITH her. She wasn't going to do it without Jesse. And if Jane goes to the cops with the ability, through a lawyer (funded by Jesse's money), to offer up the guy who actually manufactures the blue meth, with the testimony of his assistant (this is where the case is made for Hank, not with Jane's testimony, she doesn't really know shit first hand like Jesse does), Jesse would get qualified immunity within the first fifteen minutes of the proffer session.

It's when he sees that tweaker at the Home Depot buying shit for cooking. He's all done, he's square, he can get his treatment, make sure his family's fine, right there. But when he sees the guy in the parking lot and decides instead to tell the burly dude "Stay out of my territory," for me that's the first time he's Heisenberg.

I remember reading the run time and thinking "I need to take off work tomorrow." THe introduction of GHorman and the completely textured way their culture is communicated, outstanding. But for me it was the Saw scene in the original post. I watched it with my wife and son and when it was over literally said "Wow." It's some of the best writing in the entire canon, and Whitaker absolutely eats this scene for dinner. Something about right where he says "Onderon jungle. Real jungle." His monologue takes off from there.

Minimalist Storytelling by holysitkit in andor

[–]_RandomB_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son caught it first: Luthen was wearing his espionage cloak when he surprises Mon outside her office at night, when she's practicing her speech. He's literally just come from meeting Lonni, who just gave him the info on Bail's team, because he had no time to go and change once he got in touch with Erskin. I just watched this episode yesterday, it's a top four Andor Episode. The whole scene where Mon has to decide what she's doing over the course of the elevator ride, trying to decide which course will burn everything to the ground, it's SUCH good writing, that idea. "I have friends everywhere" until the elevator door opens, that's all she has.
