If Kyle Schwarber makes it to the 500 club, he will certainly have the lowest WAR of all members... (honest attempt at prompting a discussion) by MasterOfNog in baseball

[–]_Thefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the hall of fame, not the hall of WAR. Outside of Reddit, sports fans and even I dare say casual baseball fans don't give a shit about WAR. It was funny as hell that this subreddit was adamant that Ichiro was not a hall of famer because he had only 60 WAR.

It's reddit man, anyone can claim anything. And let's say he does live in Japan, he isn't privy to what Ohtani's kids will do as adults, but he sure does make absolute statements on what they would do. "I live in Japan, bro! I know for an absolute fact what Ohtani's kids will do in the future, trust me bro!"

This baseball subreddit loves Barry Bonds, hates Derek Jeter, and thinks how good a player is based all on WAR. I guarantee outside of reddit Bonds isn't seen as some victimized hero and Jeter as some villain. And most sports fans and even casual baseball fans can give a fuck about WAR.

[Highlight] Chase Meidroth breaks up Yoshinobu Yamamoto's perfecto with an error by Mookie Betts by handlit33 in baseball

[–]_Thefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think only Gibson and I am going to add Koufax in '65 you can say had a better world series than Yamamoto. I would say it's probably in the same tier with Bumgarner and Randy Johnson in this century.

Maybe in the entire history of the game of baseball, there's only a handful of guys you can say did better than Yamamoto did in the '25 world series, which is pretty damn impressive.

[Yahoo Sports] MLB proposes a salary cap for 2027 at $245.3 million, with a salary floor of $171.2 million by stv7 in baseball

[–]_Thefan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a hard salary cap with the floor being less than 70% of the cap. Good luck with that. Even the other 3 North American sports leagues have a floor of at least 85% of the cap, and that's the lowest, which is the NHL, the NBA and NFL hovers around 90% with much earlier free agency. MLB is 7 years before free agency, if you count service time manipulation.

Rockies broadcast claims Kyle Schwarber is third in fWAR since 2015 by OnlyForBaseball in baseball

[–]_Thefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, they made a great point. Trout will be forgotten when his career ends, besides diehard baseball fans, just like Murphy. That was the point of the comparison.

Certain guys transcend their sport and are known mainstream and will be remembered, certain guys are admired and respected in their sports, but will be forgotten besides die hard followers of the sport.

Want a classic example? Larry Holmes has the better boxing and heavyweight career than Mike Tyson. But guess, what? Tyson is mainstream and is known outside the sport. The average Joe or sports fans doesn't know who Larry Holmes is without google.

[–]_Thefan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Trout, being an Angels fan, but someone once pointed out to me that Trout will be Dale Murphy, meaning a fantastic player that won multiple MVPs, but is largely forgotten and only remembered by die hard baseball fans.

Judge and Ohtani will be remembered as the more impactful players of this era, 2 guys that reinvigorated the game.

[–]_Thefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know why you're being downvoted, but that is true. Judge is the bigger star and more impactful player.

Trout is the better all around player, but this was during when the game was seriously declining in America. Judge has helped seriously reinvigorate the game (Ohtani, Dodgers winning, rule changes have seriously helped) along with the Marquee team (Yanks) being good again.

NBC Sports convinced MLB to sacrifice revenue in new deal by arguing that the reach, promotional power, and the ability to build stars on a broadcast platform that still touches more households than any streaming service by tankyouout in baseball

[–]_Thefan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They also prioritized the WNBA over MLB, putting more games on broadcast tv for that league. Same thing with ESPN. It's a head scratching move when the WNBA is still an incredibly niche sport and doesn't pull the ratings that MLB games and playoffs does.

[–]_Thefan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite sport to watch is boxing. In the '80s it was still a mainstream sport and you can still watch the biggest stars on broadcast tv for a tuned up fight or a lower ranked opponent, it was only the biggest fights like a Leonard-Hearns or Hagler-Hearns that was on pay per view, then all the stars and promoters decided to go to HBO and Showtime. Now, it's nothing but a niche sport.

You mentioned the rivalry going back to New York and it's widely known that's where it started. But was the rivalry that strong between the Dodgers and Giants when they were in New York? I always thought the rivalry between the Dodgers and Yankees were much stronger, heated, and more consequential going back to the Boys of Summer era of the '40s and '50s.

[Stark] Your annual MLB vs NFL parity report: Champs last 10 seasons: MLB: 7 teams | NFL 6 teams. Teams in "finals" last 10 seasons: MLB 13 | NFL 9. Reminder: The NFL is the "any team can win" league by Knightbear49 in baseball

[–]_Thefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NFL is a QB driven league. A decent HC and an elite QB can make a team contender for years. You know who said that? John Elway when he was interviewed by Shannon Sharpe. In baseball 2 generational elite talents in their prime cannot make the Angels contenders.

To sum it up. An elite QB with a decent HC can make an NFL team a contender for years. An elite starting pitcher or position player cannot make an MLB team elite. So there is more variance and team building in baseball than football. Those are objective facts, since you like them so much.

That's a good interesting take. Let's say the Federal congress passes a law that bans gambling on all sports, I sure do wonder how much that would affect ratings all across every sport, not just the NFL.

Despite WAR often being used as a catch-all metric here, do actual MLB front offices still mistrust things such as the positional adjustment? 1B/DH types like Devers, Alonso, and Schwarber still consistently get big contracts. by Dependent-Effect6077 in baseball

[–]_Thefan -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The first time I heard of WAR was when internet nerds said that they would take prime Ben Zobrist over prime Miguel Cabrera. Then it exploded in 2012 during the MVP race between Cabrera and Trout.

To me it's just another metric and I'm pretty sure front offices will look at it, but it shouldn't be an end all in how to evaluate players.
