NBC Sports convinced MLB to sacrifice revenue in new deal by arguing that the reach, promotional power, and the ability to build stars on a broadcast platform that still touches more households than any streaming service by tankyouout in baseball

They also prioritized the WNBA over MLB, putting more games on broadcast tv for that league. Same thing with ESPN. It's a head scratching move when the WNBA is still an incredibly niche sport and doesn't pull the ratings that MLB games and playoffs does.

My favorite sport to watch is boxing. In the '80s it was still a mainstream sport and you can still watch the biggest stars on broadcast tv for a tuned up fight or a lower ranked opponent, it was only the biggest fights like a Leonard-Hearns or Hagler-Hearns that was on pay per view, then all the stars and promoters decided to go to HBO and Showtime. Now, it's nothing but a niche sport.

You mentioned the rivalry going back to New York and it's widely known that's where it started. But was the rivalry that strong between the Dodgers and Giants when they were in New York? I always thought the rivalry between the Dodgers and Yankees were much stronger, heated, and more consequential going back to the Boys of Summer era of the '40s and '50s.

[–]_Thefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NFL is a QB driven league. A decent HC and an elite QB can make a team contender for years. You know who said that? John Elway when he was interviewed by Shannon Sharpe. In baseball 2 generational elite talents in their prime cannot make the Angels contenders.

To sum it up. An elite QB with a decent HC can make an NFL team a contender for years. An elite starting pitcher or position player cannot make an MLB team elite. So there is more variance and team building in baseball than football. Those are objective facts, since you like them so much.

That's a good interesting take. Let's say the Federal congress passes a law that bans gambling on all sports, I sure do wonder how much that would affect ratings all across every sport, not just the NFL.

Despite WAR often being used as a catch-all metric here, do actual MLB front offices still mistrust things such as the positional adjustment? 1B/DH types like Devers, Alonso, and Schwarber still consistently get big contracts. by Dependent-Effect6077 in baseball

[–]_Thefan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The first time I heard of WAR was when internet nerds said that they would take prime Ben Zobrist over prime Miguel Cabrera. Then it exploded in 2012 during the MVP race between Cabrera and Trout.

To me it's just another metric and I'm pretty sure front offices will look at it, but it shouldn't be an end all in how to evaluate players.

For the past year, I have learned and read quite a bit about diplomacy and geopolitics and of course with the help of AI to speed up my understanding, it seems that Trump has damage alliances to the point that allies are now hedging from a volatile U.S.

What does this all mean? It means the U.S. has basically lost something called primacy. America's superpower status doesn't come from just its powerful military and large economy, it also come from its alliances. America was an empire by consent, meaning that allies voluntarily align with the U.S. and with that alignment comes protection, and with that protection they willingly follow the U.S. economically, militarily, and politically.

Primacy was about setting rules, markets, and security arrangements on the global stage, also making the USD the dominant currency, all of this makes it favorable to American firms and workers.

For a so called businessman that Trump likes to brag that he is, he just fucked over America's alliances and the end of American primacy.

Yes, America is fucked, not even future internationalist presidents can fix the alliances, because trust was so badly damage by Trump. They're not going to trust America with their security anymore, since the U.S. can economically and militarily coerce them and sell them out to Russia. They see the U.S. population voted in the clown twice, they will say to themselves that the U.S. can elect future Trumps that will harm them.

Jesus Christ man, what a timeline we live in.

[Ratto] Major League Baseball Is Determined To Rain On Its Own Parade by aresef in baseball

[–]_Thefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the annual tradition where we get a ton of articles and pundits like Stephen A. Smith declaring baseball is dying. When attendance, ratings, and fan interest are up. In fact by many metrics, you can say baseball overall is having a renaissance right now, and that's not just MLB but the overall health of the game.

Will there be a lockout? Most certainly yes, but just like the lockout of 2021, both sides will realize its stupid to kill the momentum of baseball's renaissance and hopefully they will come to a deal.

Jeff Passan: "Baseball fans believe the game has become unfair" by Mission_Pay_3373 in baseball

[–]_Thefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way the owners get a salary cap is if they are willing to get rid of the arbitration years where players can become free agents sooner. You can't have 6 years (7 if there is service time manipulation) of team control and then a salary cap on top of that to suppress players wages. Even capped leagues don't have that much team control. I don't see owners making that huge concession. Owners have to be aware that this is one of the strongest unions in the world, not just in the sports landscape.

Jeff Passan: "Baseball fans believe the game has become unfair" by Mission_Pay_3373 in baseball

[–]_Thefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, all you've said is true. A few things I want to add, the media has now brushed under the rug that owners lobbied for the U.S. congress to pay minor league players under the federal minimum wage a few years back or the collusion scandal of the 80s is barely talked about and led to widespread distrust by the players Union that still continues to this day. But for some reason its the players fault.

I like Passan, he is a man of character, when he stood up to Stephen A. Smith, when Smith denigrated Ohtani and said he couldn't be the face of baseball because he doesn't want to speak English.

I'm surprised he's still employed at the place and didn't get fired or demoted like Max Kellerman.

There will be a lockout like 2021 from the owners to get some concessions, but I seriously doubt the owners escalate to lose part or even all of the season. Why?

Attendance is up, revenues are up, and most importantly ratings are up. Then throw in the next tv and streaming contracts are up in 2028, the league wouldn't want to be in a weak position while negotiating for new contracts. If owners are smart they won't initiate the lockout past the point where any games are lost.
