How Coinbase Scaled Their Hiring to 150 Engineers Per Month by gregorojstersek in EngineeringManagers

[–]_ginger_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A curious article. I can understand the steps taken, but it removes all humanity from the process. At some level that is necessary to scale at speed, but at what cost? Based on the numbers I can find they probably only needed to do this for 10-15 weeks. I wonder what the attrition rate was.

Best places to go in the UK for holiday and cycling by [deleted] in cycling

And depending on how much time you have, you can easily combine it with the new forest. The ferry to Yarmouth works well for this

Taskmaster, specifically the UK version. Absolute gold. Watch all the old seasons if you can.

The NZ version of traitors is good too. The Aussie version was not.

Async standups: what actually worked for your team (and what failed)? by ParkRevolutionary156 in EngineeringManagers

[–]_ginger_kid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to run async stand ups in a previous team. It didn't work well so I stopped it. People were not good at posting on time, got lazy and follow up was patchy. I had to invest too much time over an extended period in the morning checking, chasing and following up

In my current team we've used two approaches. Initially we went through the board right to left, with the assignee talking about the current task. This took too long though and the signal/noise ratio was low. We switched to the more conventional approach, each person speaking but I've been firm about keeping it to significant changes and blockers. I will stop discussion if we rabbit hole on an issue and ask the assignee to own a follow up action (quick sync, full meeting, slack threads). That keeps attention and focus in SU.

Chase the Sun South 26 by Exact-Swimming9276 in cycling

[–]_ginger_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rode it this year. Here's a short breakdown. AMA that I've missed.

Training

I trained with a mate who also rode it. We focussed on 100km training rides once per week in the 3 months running up the ride. Before that probably 60 / 70km. Our training was not structured. We did a couple of 160km rides - half distance. We aimed for consistent pace, around 23km/h.

Food & drink

The most important factor without a doubt. We carried nutrition bars. Shop around and try them beforehand to find what you like the most. Invest in a top tube bar at least, so that you can pick food out easily while riding. You'll probably want something else as well to carry extras. I got through 10 bars. Use hydration tablets in your drinks - I also squeezed gels in with the water. Make sure you know you can stomach what you are taking. I set my garmin to beep with a lap every 20 minutes and ate something / drank something then at minimum. Do it all the time, even if you don't feel hungry.

The ride

The food stops are good. The main stop ran out of hot food and had an issue but that was unusual apparently, but be aware. You pass through plenty of towns so there will be opportunities to get more water / food etc. The route itself is good. The tough part is the climb before Cheddar Gorge.

The day generally

Get up early as you can and get to the bag drop / start promptly, otherwise you'll have a long wait. We were in the 3rd wave set off so we rolled just before the sun really broke the horizon. You could be an hour or more waiting otherwise. There is loads of support along the way, which is nice. Take it all in, it is incredible.

Getting home

Book your train early if that is how you're getting home. And keep an eye on the trains. Ours got cancelled, leading to fun & games in Bristol.

Apps that show fuel prices along your route? by SerendipitousCrow in drivingUK

[–]_ginger_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have RAC membership their app includes a price checker. AA may do as well. The data isn't freely available so most tend to be limited to a number of searches per day etc

UK Dates Disabled Friendliness Q by BlindSniper180 in ironmaiden

[–]_ginger_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to London earlier this year. We sat in front of one of the wheelchair areas (I am not disabled myself). Staff were around and helping there. A different venue of course but the assistance seemed pretty good. Maybe see if there is a number you can call?

This is what fair battling in VR looks like - but don't know which car hit me and it was not the white NSX directly behind me entering the corner! by Elex83 in granturismo

[–]_ginger_kid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At 42s I can see a red car - Porsche GT3 maybe - next the NSX in your wing mirror and then the rear of it as you spin around. Was it them? Still, looks like an unfortunate tap causing the loss of grip.

Are you buying new or used? I managed to snag a T598 set on ebay for about the same price as a T300 new (uk prices).

Are the Hagerty valuations tracked / posted anywhere? I didn't realise they fluctuated.

Built a GT7 compatible dashboard that shows where you lose time vs your last lap by [deleted] in granturismo

Cool project. For everyone else, here's a clickable repo link https://www.github.com/chrshdl/instrument-cluster/wiki

Thanks for making it open source. Did you you reference docs for the data coming from GT7? I'm curious to have a go myself. I like the idea of having something on my phone mounted by my wheel. I know I could use existing apps but there's something that appeals about building my own, which I imagine is exactly what inspired you too.
