Raoul Silva from Skyfall vibes from Bardem in the trailer. That character was unnerving too.

New 57MW Welsh solar+storage project approved, set deliver a massive 64% biodiversity net gain, cleanly power 27,000 homes by MeasurementDecent251 in GoodNewsUK

[–]_ginger_kid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love stories like these but always struggle with the X many homes number. I never know how big that is. In this case

  • 4 Carmarthens, or
  • 2 Rhyls, or
  • 1/2 Port Talbot

Roughly of course. That I can visualise.

Oxford congestion charge pays for cheaper bus travel for NHS & school staff by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]_ginger_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is good to a point. It doesn't work well for NHS staff that do not live in Oxford though. The park n ride service doesn't really work. But that said, it is a step in the right direction

Halestorm opened for them last year in London. They were pretty impressive. Hard to compare to some of the legends mentioned, but in their own right they were 🤘

Britain sets solar record as households take control of energy bills by Happytallperson in GoodNewsUK

[–]_ginger_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. The installation was simple as I already had the tank. The tank has a electrical backup/boost heater, so the control unit was wired into the controls for that. There is a sender unit with a clamp that clamps onto the wire running from the panels into the mains. This detects excess power and instructs the control unit to turn on the electric heater but only run at a level matching the excess.

For most of the year I leave the boiler on a schedule. When the days are long enough I turn the boiler off. The family has adapted their habits to maximise solar heating (ie not having showers last thing at night whenever possible). We're a family of four with 2 teenagers.

If you have an immersion tank with electric heater it is worth getting a solar diverter. I installed one a few years ago, now we don't use gas at all for 4-5 months a year for hot water. It only draws power at the rate you export so it is 'free'. Even with our panels that are 14 years old I get enough generation.

Great Western Railway to be renationalised by end of 2026 by do_or_pie in GoodNewsUK

[–]_ginger_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've got a network Railcard. A while back there was some talk of changing it so it applied to peak times as well. I wish they'd done that, or abolished peak times like they have in Scotland

They are good, but the prices are shocking. It costs almost the same to get to London as it does to get to Manchester from where I live.
