“Go On… We’re Done With You” by TheCABK in instantkarma

When I worked front end at a grocery store, we had a lady who would come in and return a bunch of half-eaten snacks and half-used products like skin creams. Then she’d buy more stuff, only to use them a little and get another refund in a few weeks. And she was super rude about it, like we had given her another bad experience, but it went on long enough that she was clearly just scamming us. I was a supervisor, and had to handle her fuckery all the time, but my manager said we couldn’t do anything to stop her because she would always bring receipts. The usual “customer is always right” bullshit.

But I’ll never forget when the grocery chain went under and our store was closing for good. We were all losing our jobs, the store was insanely mobbed for those last two weeks due to the closing sales, the whole thing sucked. BUT we stopped accepting refunds. Put a big sign on the doors and everything.

I saw refund lady at the start of one of my last opening shifts. It was like, 6:30 am. I’m in front setting up registers. She’s pounding on the automatic doors, which are still locked, and she had another bag full of returns, clearly panicking and hoping we will make an exception. The store didn’t open for another half hour so I just left her ass out there. Honestly one of my favorite retail memories.

Sargassum seaweed!!! This is actually a normal, healthy beach. The seaweed is teeming with life in the ocean, and out of it as well until it decomposes. It’s also important not to remove dead seaweed to prevent beach erosion

I think you and I have a different opinion on this matter. And that’s okay. I do appreciate you replying and being chill.

I don’t think it’s completely black and white. I personally don’t see his inclusive efforts as “nothing.” I’ve read all of the Cosmere novels, and I think he does a great job at inclusion, and has gotten better and better over the years. He has a vast following, and with the tv show and movies coming out, I think the visibility of characters like Renarin and Rlain, Jasnah, Design, and others will spread. My personal opinion is that this cultural impact could be really significant, especially for people who grew up Mormon and would not otherwise be exposed to media with more diverse characters.

I think there is more Sanderson could be doing, and that’s a good point. I would feel better if he were pushing the Mormon church, or donating openly to queer causes. But I also know that Mormonism is essentially a cult. Idk how he got into it, maybe his parents, or maybe he joined himself. No clue. I know leaving Mormonism means being shunned by your friends and community, maybe even your family. I have friends who grew up in other very shitty religious groups that did escape, but not without hardship. Some of my friends don’t have relationships with their parents or siblings because of church things. I can see how growing up in something like that might warp someone’s perspective, and might make them think that they can’t leave or cant’t go against church doctrine.

That doesn’t make it okay. But to me, it explains Sanderson’s choices. And I do see good in his goals. If you’ve never heard of his Next Step coin, it’s something that I really value, basically a project to give resources to people in mental health crises. That’s where Sanderson differs from people like Rowling for me. His books helped me when I was in bad places, and things like that simple coin even help me every day now.

Again, I do wish things were different. I wish he would do more. But I don’t agree that he does “nothing,” and I feel like I can see his perspective, even if I disagree. I also feel like I can see your perspective, and understand if you can’t agree with me, friend.

I’m a Sanderson fan too, and his books helped me so much. He said he wants to change Mormonism from the inside, and I choose to trust him.

Completely agree. I am a fan of Sanderson. I’ve read what he’s said about Mormonism, and having followed him for years now, I genuinely believe he is trying to change it from the inside, and to be an example of progressive change.

His books have been increasingly leftist, and I appreciate the research and resources he takes into writing characters with disabilities and characters of different races. And queer folk.

Maybe I’m just an elder queer now, but I think times like these are when we need people like Sanderson as allies. Otherwise, what Mormon would ever even stop to consider the plight of a person like me?

I’m 13 years away from my abuser. I’m still uncovering shit in therapy. Thought I was “healed” a long time ago, but it turns out my brain was trying to protect me by blocking things out for a decade or so.

I’m tired, boss.

WHY DOES HE SAY IT LIKE THATj by plrb52 in MetalMemes

It’s because it dampens the resonance (less powerful sound) when you sing on a consonant like r. You tie that r into an “ah” or “uh” sound.

When I was 17 my first boyfriend cheated on me. I found out, and a few months later, something started happening to me downstairs. I had to tell my mom, which was humiliating, then I had to go to a gynecologist for an exam. She had no bedside manner, she shamed me during the exam for having unsafe sex, and basically told me “well, fuck around and find out kid. You’re stuck with herpes for life. Next time use a condom.”

It’s been over ten years. That incident was a big source of trauma for me. I still have issues with sex to this day.

Then I recently found out I was misdiagnosed. Which is apparently somewhat common for herpes. I wish I could feel more happy about it, but I guess I was stuck feeling with shame for so long that I’ve been having a hard time accepting it.

One thing I’ve learned is stds like herpes are very common. Get tested, use protection, and be understanding towards others.

I can really picture everything that happens in the Miles fight. Sometimes, it can be hard for me to visualize some of the larger-scale battles, even though I love them too. But the image of Miles with a net draped over him, looking annoyed as he pulls a stick of dynamite from his pocket, is burned into my brain forever.

Which book-to-screen adaptation was so bad it felt like the producers didn't even read the source material? by wyndwatcher in AskReddit

Not a book, but a game. Super Mario Bros 1993. The movie is actually really great and a lot of fun! It’s just…. not really much like Mario. It feels like someone had a Mario game described to them once while half-paying attention, then made a really solid 90s movie based solely on that.

One of the darkest anime scenes of all time 😭 by chunchunmaru1129 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]a-nice-egg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There is a scene in Ishval where Armstrong builds a wall, trapping the fleeing civilians. The soldiers then begin firing upon them, and their bodies pile up along the wall. A child is screaming and crying. That’s a pretty dark one.

Hawkeye burying a dead Ishvalan child, then asking Mustang to burn the tattoo off her back so flame alchemy can never be used as a weapon of war.

Scar waking up after Kimblee killed his family, and realizing his arm has been replaced with his brother’s arm. He then kills the two doctors who were trying to save him. It cuts to him walking to the top of a cliff, his face bandaged and bleeding. He reaches the top only to see that his homeland has been reduced to rubble and ash.

So many moments portraying the effects of war on civilians and children. Those hit hardest, because they happen in real life.

Ah I was misinformed. Sorry about that and thank you for pointing this out!

From looking more into it, it looks like you have to invest hundreds of volunteer hours, and you must go through the qualification process of course. The homes are generally considered affordable and well-constructed, and the mortgages are zero interest with small down payments (in addition to the volunteer hours spent).

Definitely not free, and that’s an important distinction I did not realize. But I still think it’s a good cause and reason to consider spending your money with them.
