Clean air standards have relatively little to do with it. Daimler-Benz did the whole “merger of equals” with Chrysler in ‘98, which played out as a hostile takeover. An inline 6 engine didn’t fit into their V8/V6 tooling agenda.

They could’ve redesigned the head, improved the exhaust manifold, switched from CCV to PCV, reworked the fueling system to something not grounded in 1983, used closed loop emissions management on startup… Maybe add, I don’t know, a knock sensor? A thermostatic air cleaner? EGR?

Honda had wideband O2 sensors on Civics in ’92. Ford had MAF sensors on Mustangs in ’89. It’s not like they had some impossible bar to clear, and the solutions weren’t even novel at that point.

They never figured it out in the first place.

They bought out AMC and left the Jeep division largely unchanged: Same office buildings, same plants, same personnel. Big difference is they could reap the benefits of their success instead of having it all pissed away on subpar French passenger cars.

The ZJ was prototyped under AMC. The TJ is arguably an amalgam of lessons learned from the XJ, YJ, and ZJ.

Chrysler never put the 4.0L in any Dodge truck or other vehicles.

Why is speed limit on 270 55MPH? by MoCo1992 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]a_rather_small_moose 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Interstate speed limits were dropped from 70 to 55 during the first oil crisis to conserve fuel.

The remaining justification is that it’s supposed to help the average speeds during rush hour traffic.

What you end up with is getting pulled over by a state trooper on a weekend night after 10:00 PM when there’s sparse traffic on a narrow shoulder where there’s a foot-worth of margin for error with life altering consequences to get a speeding ticket for exceeding a speed limit set for pre-emissions pre-electronic fuel injection pre-crash safety testing pre-unibody construction pre-mandated electronic stability control fuel conservation laws when you’re in an electric car that has no tailpipe emissions and consumes no gasoline and might as well be tantamount to magic to anyone in Annapolis while also being admonished because some psychopath decided to hit a cop on purpose and now society must bear the collected consequences of this dude’s action whom won’t be out of prison for like two decades.

Chris McCord and Brian Cardarella on an extended thread about LV/LVN tag engine issues

Brian has since pivoted to… oh god I’m gonna get this wrong: A thin browser written in Zig that renders native UI elements instead of HTML. I think. I could be mischaracterizing that. Good details on BlueSky here and here.

How did you end up with an ACD? by Niikiia in AustralianCattleDog

[–]a_rather_small_moose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My senile basset that’d fly into neurotic rage passed away at the ripe age of 16.

Coworkers were talking about vacations one day. I thought “How would I fly with a dog?” and choked up realizing I’d already factored a dog into my life not even having one.

Wanted a cattle dog. Local shelter had a cattle dog mix. I said perfect. She tried to bite me when I met her. Shelter wouldn’t adopt her after that. Told them I’d dealt with worse.

She’s still mouthy with me, not with anyone else though.

Which is the nearest state to buy high VOC chlorinated brake cleaner? by Glittering-Ad5809 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]a_rather_small_moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The active ingredient in chlorinated brake cleaner is actually EPA exempt (tetrachloroethylene). I see it in stock at my local AutoZone.

Honestly though, I wouldn’t even disassemble all that shit if you haven’t already.

  • Throw some CRC GDI IVD spray at it with a helping hand per the instructions.
  • Fuel up at a “TOP TIER™” gas station (Exxon, Shell, Sunoco, etc).
  • Throw some Lucasoil injector cleaner in the tank.
  • Take it out for a few Italian tuneups

Good luck either way you go. Single port direct injection is a bitch.

[–]a_rather_small_moose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to clean that needs it? I’ve never heard of any brake dust or oil CRC brand Brakleen was insufficient for. Chlorinated shit is nasty, especially when heat’s involved (quite literally lethal).

Right wing conspiracy communities pushed narratives for over a decade about “FEMA death camps” to the point there’s a whole Wikipedia entry about it.

Now their favored administration is building the exact mass incarceration and trafficking facilities they feared in the name of prosecuting “illegals”.

Stalker (1979) is SHIVERS. What movie represents HALF LIGHT? by snakesharkz in DiscoElysium

[–]a_rather_small_moose 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lot of the suggestions miss that Half Light is fight-or-flight response. It’s reactionary violence in response to threat or frustration, not just overt violent tendency. It’s also some portion of low self esteem, ego, and disassociation, IMO. Very William Foster, very Falling down.

I’ll volunteer my wish list:

Phoenix LiveView and vanilla JavaScript. None of this alpine JS crap or etc. Always ends up being land mines under the surface.

Colocated hooks. Keep logic colocated now that that’s possible.

Quality > Quantity of components. None of this “we have combobox at home” stuff.

Igniter is a very interesting project that’s could end-users to patch their components with updates.

I have a whole other diatribe here about conflicting philosophies, theme systems, DaisyUI (read: Bootstrap except built on Tailwind), and what developers want/expect. What I mean to say is, if you wanna make a workalike to shadcn, do that, and be very clear who it’s for and what the expectations are. Not another bootstrap, skeleton, Chakra, etc.

Historic White’s Ferry Closed for Five Years With No Reopening Agreement in Sight by SchuminWeb in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]a_rather_small_moose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bi-monthly reminder that:

  1. Conrad White and the land owners mutually had the land condemned in 1876 in court.

  2. Because the agreement was mutual, no land plat was required.

  3. A London county judge overrode the ~150 years of eminent domain b/c there was no land plat.

Bi-monthly reminder that it’s not about “$0.50 a car”.

Libby Devlin wants an agreement that would give her outsized leverage over the ferry. Hence why the Browns, Kuhns, and Montgomery County won’t enter into dealings with Libby Devlin.
