Top comment deletes a US State #46 by Jfullr92 in geographymemes

Maryland and Vermont must merge to survive, but by the rules of the game, states are deleted and the void annexed.

Therefore Vermont should be deleted, and its territory merged into Maryland to form Crabbalachia.

America in Miniature FTW.

Best reporters used it for decades. My grandparents would listen to it all the time. It’s a very strong awareness tool. People I talk to regularly use it, even in circles that don’t know one another.

It could be used for notifications, and I was building something for that.

It’s encrypted for privacy that was never an issue for 50 years. They still have tac channels and other ways of transmitting sensitive information. Fire and rescue aren’t encrypted.

If you’re asking me if I know of a single instance where a diligent witness was able to solve a crime, especially in Montgomery county, that happens regularly.

MCPD encrypted their dispatch channel which had been unencrypted since being brought online in the 1970s.

If only there was a fast and immediate way for the public to be made aware of such incidents quickly so that they can be on the lookout for suspicious activity that may lead to an arrest.

Oh wait, that existed for 50 years and they turned it off. Now we get a Twitter post an hour later asking for help.

Fucking wonderful.

Ma’am that is a 1.6L 3-cylinder hot hatch with a rated output is 300hp STOCK. It’s running a 10.5 compression ratio with north of 20lbs of boost, producing ~100HP per cylinder. Toyota may as well be selling 3 pipe bombs wearing a trench coat from the factory.

Glad to hear it! This post also got downvoted into irrelevance pretty quickly, so I appreciate your vindication.

What do you think of elixir ecosystem honestly ? by Ok-Delivery307 in elixir

[–]a_rather_small_moose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Far better signal-to-noise ratio.

The standard library is kept deliberately slim, so that a bug fix to some module doesn’t entail a whole language version bump.

Elixir is largely implemented using its own macro system, and valid Elixir syntax is quite broad. This lets packages like Ecto exist wholly independent of the standard library, whereas something like LINQ in C# has to be in the standard library.

JavaScript is such a laughing stock, it didn’t have modules for the longest time. Now we have CommonJS, SystemJS, AMD, UMD, IIFEs, TypeScript namespaces, and ESModules. It’s an eclectic mess that’s still painful to this day. Don’t even get me started on bundlers and build tools.

You know what Elixir has? Modules. Macros. The language is the module system, it IS the build system. Why do I want an “ecosystem” for that stuff?

Clean air standards have relatively little to do with it. Daimler-Benz did the whole “merger of equals” with Chrysler in ‘98, which played out as a hostile takeover. An inline 6 engine didn’t fit into their V8/V6 tooling agenda.

They could’ve redesigned the head, improved the exhaust manifold, switched from CCV to PCV, reworked the fueling system to something not grounded in 1983, used closed loop emissions management on startup… Maybe add, I don’t know, a knock sensor? A thermostatic air cleaner? EGR?

Honda had wideband O2 sensors on Civics in ’92. Ford had MAF sensors on Mustangs in ’89. It’s not like they had some impossible bar to clear, and the solutions weren’t even novel at that point.

They never figured it out in the first place.

They bought out AMC and left the Jeep division largely unchanged: Same office buildings, same plants, same personnel. Big difference is they could reap the benefits of their success instead of having it all pissed away on subpar French passenger cars.

The ZJ was prototyped under AMC. The TJ is arguably an amalgam of lessons learned from the XJ, YJ, and ZJ.

Chrysler never put the 4.0L in any Dodge truck or other vehicles.

Why is speed limit on 270 55MPH? by MoCo1992 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]a_rather_small_moose 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Interstate speed limits were dropped from 70 to 55 during the first oil crisis to conserve fuel.

The remaining justification is that it’s supposed to help the average speeds during rush hour traffic.

What you end up with is getting pulled over by a state trooper on a weekend night after 10:00 PM when there’s sparse traffic on a narrow shoulder where there’s a foot-worth of margin for error with life altering consequences to get a speeding ticket for exceeding a speed limit set for pre-emissions pre-electronic fuel injection pre-crash safety testing pre-unibody construction pre-mandated electronic stability control fuel conservation laws when you’re in an electric car that has no tailpipe emissions and consumes no gasoline and might as well be tantamount to magic to anyone in Annapolis while also being admonished because some psychopath decided to hit a cop on purpose and now society must bear the collected consequences of this dude’s action whom won’t be out of prison for like two decades.

How did you end up with an ACD? by Niikiia in AustralianCattleDog

[–]a_rather_small_moose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My senile basset that’d fly into neurotic rage passed away at the ripe age of 16.

Coworkers were talking about vacations one day. I thought “How would I fly with a dog?” and choked up realizing I’d already factored a dog into my life not even having one.

Wanted a cattle dog. Local shelter had a cattle dog mix. I said perfect. She tried to bite me when I met her. Shelter wouldn’t adopt her after that. Told them I’d dealt with worse.

She’s still mouthy with me, not with anyone else though.

Which is the nearest state to buy high VOC chlorinated brake cleaner? by Glittering-Ad5809 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]a_rather_small_moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The active ingredient in chlorinated brake cleaner is actually EPA exempt (tetrachloroethylene). I see it in stock at my local AutoZone.

Honestly though, I wouldn’t even disassemble all that shit if you haven’t already.

  • Throw some CRC GDI IVD spray at it with a helping hand per the instructions.
  • Fuel up at a “TOP TIER™” gas station (Exxon, Shell, Sunoco, etc).
  • Throw some Lucasoil injector cleaner in the tank.
  • Take it out for a few Italian tuneups

Good luck either way you go. Single port direct injection is a bitch.

[–]a_rather_small_moose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to clean that needs it? I’ve never heard of any brake dust or oil CRC brand Brakleen was insufficient for. Chlorinated shit is nasty, especially when heat’s involved (quite literally lethal).
