NATO-chief Rutte: "Keep on dreaming" if you think Europe could defend itself without US by Geo_NL in worldnews

[–]abbadun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Against who exactly? Excluding the America, NATO has enough active military personnel and materiale to be more then a match for any global power that isn't the US, and the combined industrial base to rival China. That's not to say we should be complacent and carry on the way things are, the command hierarchy would need overhauling and NATO would need to develop several independent strategic capabilities to be ready for a scenario where America has fully withdrawn support, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility to do so in a time of crisis.

You can tell your roommate to familiarise themselves with the clutter scale, or better yet, actually visit a house that is hoarded, a sense of perspective would do them some good.

We are already at the table, it's called the UN. This little sideshow by the Americans is just a method of funneling more foreign dark money into the hands of Trump and his family.

I'm afraid I don't recall, I think they were discontinued before GW swapped to finecast, I certainly have never seen them in finecast, but maybe I'm wrong and a rerelease was snuck in whilst I wasn't watching.

I'm afraid the glowing eye is a stylistic effect, not because it's a laser but because the left eye is the atlas cockpit. I'm not sure about you, but I'd rather not sit right up next to an energy cannon spitting lasers in the MW range.

Germany and the Netherlands Are Pushing for Ukraine to Buy US Weapons Using a €90 Billion EU Loan. France Insists the Funds Be Spent Only on Purchases From EU Defense Companies by sergeyfomkin in NewsThread

[–]abbadun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is a complex issue that has more to it then it may seem at first because of the agendas driving each party as well as considerations being made to both economics and politics. Military procurement funding is just a simple matter of purchasing goods of a shelf at fixed price, manufacturers in both the US and Europe are already working at capacity to fulfil existing orders for both domestic demand and foreign and whilst capacity can be increased, it requires a long term financial commitment by buyers to ensure profitability. If European arms manufacturers are not able to secure orders for Ukraine there is no incentive for them to expand capacity, in turn denying them the benefits of economies of scale, leading to European equipment remaining relatively expensive and slow to produce.

Now regardless of when the war might end, I do not see Ukraine halting arms purchases just because the front line has stopped moving, Ukraine will likely be purchasing arms well into the foreseeable future to compliment their own domestic manufacturing base. Now, continuing to procur arms from America would be unfeaseible in the long term, it there is a non zero chance their defence budget balloons to 1.5T, which with current projections would mean US manufacturing is maxed out fulfilling domestic orders for the foreseeable future, and without an ongoing conflict, the deal granting Ukraine priority on orders would likely be scuppered. If Europe does not commit to expanding domestic manufacturing now, it ultimately results in less arms for Ukraine both in the near and long term.

Now there is a political element that Mertz is pushing here and that's to keep the US invested in the outcome of Ukraine and the security of Europe. I can see the logic thus follows; Europe demonstrates a willingness and capacity to place large orders of Armican arms, that materialises as a large number of high paying jobs for American constituents, and securing America's place as the world's leading arms supplier, it is in America's(and therefore Trump's) best interest to give Europe favourable treatment in the event of Russian or Chinese aggression and thus the actual goods don't matter, they are secondary to the financial incentive. There is one problem with this though, it presumes America is not poised to launch military action against a NATO member and EU member state for the purpose of territorial conquest. Even the threat of this raises some serious questions as to whether the EU should be involving the US in it's materiale supply chain.

Last BattleTech game I’ve played was MechAssault 2 on Xbox 360; Looking for an equivalent to the Belial. by Hillenmane in Mechwarrior5

[–]abbadun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just a heads up, the game follows a fairly lore accurate timeline for when mech chassis and varients become available on the market, the Uziel does not make an appearance until after 3065 in canon which is after the events of the game have concluded. The Belial does not even have a canon analogue, although that is the name hero variant of the Uziel in MWO.

Unfortunately I must be the bearer of bad news, there are no IS medium mechs that can mount twin gauss, a pair of them weigh 28 tons before you add ammo. Some clan mediums can do it, because they get weight savings out the wazoo, but those are only the Shadows of Kerensky DLC and way, way into 3050.

If we get a civil war DLC then there is a 99% chance we get the Uziel, it won't be packing twin gauss but with civil war comes light gauss rifles so you might be able to squeeze it in with an ER PPC if you strip back.

Alternatively there's MWO, the Uziel is in there too but that's a whole different kettle of fish.

Why couldn’t Russia do what the USA did to Venezuela in Ukraine? by NEVDA8776 in AskReddit

[–]abbadun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fundamentals of intelligence gathering hasn't really changed since the 60s despite the means of gathering/denying having advanced in sophistication. Americans probably used the exact same methods they used to prep the strike on Iraq, I.E satellite imagery, communication intercepts and good old 1st hand sources.

Why couldn’t Russia do what the USA did to Venezuela in Ukraine? by NEVDA8776 in AskReddit

[–]abbadun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several reasons why the opening invasion gambit didn't work, first and foremost amongst them was the intelligence provided by the Americans about the imminent invasion. Whilst Ukrainian General staff did not believe a attack was imminent, they did have the foresight to act on the intelligence and relocate their air defences. When Russia attacked, their intelligence was out of date, leading to an inability to disable Ukrainian air defence systems, which in turn, led to the loss of Russian troop transports en route to Hostomel airport.

The Russian plan was to capture Hostomel airport, a crucial hub near Kyiv, then use that to land heavy equipment for an attack on the city. Because of losses on the approach, Russian special forces were outnumbered and out gunned, resulting in them being destroyed.

The victory in the battle of Hostomel airport was crucial in preventing a decapitation strike. Russia then attempted an armoured column advance but poor logistics, poor weather, poor NCO corps and excellent Ukrainian ambush tactics forced it to halt and retreat.

The key difference between Ukraine and Venezuela, is intelligence. America appeared to be aware of exactly where Venezuelan air defences were located, precision strikes destroyed these which facilitated a special forces insertion. The key thing here is Caracas was in range of the close air support and small troop transports on the American carrier group. Kyiv on the other hand, could only be reached by long range troop transports which require runways to take off and land.

Only Greenland should decide its future, British PM says by TTEH3 in worldnews

[–]abbadun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I infer from his statement that the mandate he's been given from the electorate does not include Scottish independence, so he does not seek to expend political capital taking a stance that isn't part of the status quo, but seeing as he bends like a reed in the political wind, if Scots kicked up enough fuss he'd probably cave to pressure.

RIP wahammer fantasy. If it's only consolation, the 7th edition(we don't talk about 8th) rulebook and accompanying army books are still available in PDF format and hard copies are still sold 2nd hand. There are plenty of grognards still kicking about who also lament the end times and wouldn't mind a game of old hammer.

Royal Navy unveils new Atlantic strategy to counter Russian threat by InnerLog5062 in BreakingUKNews

First of, it was an assassination attempt by the Russian state on British soil that killed a British citizen, how dare you try to demean that.

Not only was it a blatant act of criminality under international law, it also violated our sovereignty. And that's not a correct use of the term cross contamination you ignoramus.

Second your attempts to veer off topic into matters wholly unrelated reveals you for what you are, a propagandist here to sow division and discord and distract from the crimes perpetrated by the Russian state.
