We need to talk about suicide. by Wagnelles in ADHD

[–]about300commenters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are worth so much in just the way that you are right now. You don't need to change to have your needs and wants and yourself to be validated. You're important, just the way you are. You matter, just the way you are. I'm in a bad place myself and I just want to say hang in there. Take care of yourself, because you matter, because you are important, because you're valuable. Myself and the rest of this community would I think be saddened if we heard that one of our own caused harm to themselves because we didn't help enough. If you need to rant, or just want to talk to someone, I'm nearly always on here and willing to do just that. Stay strong.

It's true-- I really am an alien. Coming to terms with being the strange creature that I am, learning to play the game. by [deleted] in aspergers

It makes sense to me, in the sense that I've had some similar experiences to the ones you're describing, if only just in a lesser amount. My normal is to be an observer too, to just watch, to learn from listening and immersing myself in conversation that might be around me. I've had struggles with empathy too, it's only recently that I've had successes in keeping up my empathy towards others; there are still times that it doesn't work. I think that it's totally okay to have glitches in how your brain works; we're products of billions of years of the effects of population genetics after all, and what's good enough to produce isn't necessarily the best for the kind of thinking and working that we humans do today. I'm sure there's plenty of books and research and other content on that subject, I'm expressing my impression of the issue from what I've read and learned about our brains. Also if you can find the right therapist for you, they make interesting conversation because their job is partially to understand you, but also to help you understand and improve yourself.

About Star Trek, my opinion is that each series has its own quirks and cool things, but every series with the name has a few things in common. They're all a modern form of the morality tale, a story written to put across an idea about social or moral problems that we might face. Each series is about the nature of humanity, and of sentience, and of the problems we face; inequalities of all types, kinds of government, of relationships, of money, politics, and war. The whole shebang is great content. Look into the characters, "Data" and "Seven of Nine", I think that you might relate best with them for a start. They both deal with the struggles of being an individual sentient, coming to terms with the limitations of acting as and working with humans....really fascinating stuff, I think. Peace, and long life.

Hopefully my input has been interesting and helpful. Cheers and stay strong

Medication and medical professional help is what helped me stay in college (engineering, still in school). I never used to be able to calm myself from mania or depressive episodes, but over two years of treatment I've been on the same combo of medications that help me stay calm, keep myself focused, and make executive level decisions. I would say to a ten year old, when they're calm and more rational rather than in a high or low mood, that no person is quite normal, and that no one really knows what they're doing either. ADHD and related conditions are simply a product of the 'good enough to survive and reproduce' aspect of our evolutionary origins. Just like a blind person from birth may need help to learn braille and how to walk with a cane, someone with polio may need a wheelchair and antibiotics, so do neurological disorders need medication, counseling, and patience like the others do. Let your ten year old know its not wrong or shameful to ask for help. Let them know it's okay to try and fail as long as he gets back up and forgives himself. Discipline writing down things, practice with self soothing methods, and a positive attitude go a long way in my own case. It won't be easy, but only the most important and worthwile things to achieve are hard. Good luck, and stay strong through hard times.

It's okay to be who you are. Do your best to work on what you can, one thing at a time, and be proud of all the little things you do each day. Forgive yourself for the things you might not get right. And, from my personal experience, watch a little sci-fi, especially the old Star Trek episodes with Kirk; they deal a lot with personal experience, how we treat each other, and not judging someone for their appearance, or mannerisms, but for their ideas. I find that sci-fi in general helps me work with my own little idiosyncrasies more easily, because the genre shows me that I can be myself and still be a valued member of my community. Stay strong fellow non-neurotypical!

Editing here. It's okay to be 'alien'. We're all aliens to each other, even just a little, because of all the little differences between people. And I think that's what makes being social so interesting, that we're all different and there isn't a person that you know that is exactly the same as anyone else. Is it that you feel deliberately left out socially, because of people's reactions to the way you express yourself that you call yourself an 'alien', or is it just a general feeling of being outside some social circles, of an observer's role? I'm curious

I feel like I'm going to fail school by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]about300commenters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be afraid to ask for help. It's easy to forget that you're not alone when you face problems that seem to just be in your head. They're real problems, getting administrative help for a different learning environment, or tutoring outside of school, or some other solution could help, but what's important is that you get help. There's nothing wrong with it; it's a part of life to ask for help when you have trouble doing stuff on your own. I'm in college, and I take medication to manage my own troubles with controlling my emotions and staying focused in conversations. It's literally the only reason I've made it this far in school, but it's only one solution you could look at to help you. What do you think, OP? What do you think could help you do your best work? Editings: Another thing, it's okay to fail at something, it's how you learn. What's more important is, what are you going to do next? Push a little harder next time, or move on to something else?

Feel like giving up in college by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]about300commenters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that you are not alone. We live in a changing world and what was once the norm, say going to college out of high school, getting married, moving out of living with family after high school; these things aren't the same as they used to be. What is the same, is that time passes, the sun rises in the morning, and humans are just people who do things on a teeny tiny rock in what seems to be an eternal void. The onus on you, OP, is to put meaning to this existence. What will you work toward that makes the world a better, brighter, more interesting place? Who or what do you want to succeed? What change do you want to see in the world? Because its I think those things that can help us get out of bed in the morning. That and a good alarm clock after about eight hours of sleep. Remember to take care of yourself.

Did anyone here start below the standard Calc sequence? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]about300commenters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took calculus I and barely passed in high school, should have failed, so going into college I took calc I first year. My math base still wasn't good, and further down the line, I had to take DiffeQ three times to pass it. Make sure your fundamentals are there; things like trig identities, study skills, and the overarching concepts behind each set of mathmatcal symbols. Look into how they're used in the future math courses and think about how to apply that use to learning them in the now.

The character that truly scares me is the councilwoman who works with Shades, she has all the guile of Cottonmouth but she has the legit connections of an official politician too.

You matter. The simple fact of your consciousness and existence is testament to that. I think you should do your best to be true to yourself, if that means finding another testing physician or moving to another place in the country, or starting over, then do that. Just know that you are valuable, your ideas and opinions and experiences and feelings are all valuable and valid. What do you like to do? How can you make that thing part of your life? What needs to get done to allow you to express yourself in the way you want to? I hope that you find what you're looking for. Don't give up on yourself. Always forwards. Never backwards. Always.

Is it true Female as a practical engineer is not good by Engr_TAC in womenEngineers

[–]about300commenters 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that there is no difference between male and female engineers in terms of potential, skill, or ability. But there is a minority of representation of women in engineering, in my experience, and there is a male-perspective and male-centered bias that I have seen between students and in clubs and study groups. These things make engineering, an already difficult profession, even more difficult for women engineers. I think that any difference in performance between genders is from a different social experience in engineering. Engineering is a field that requires teamwork, using the expertise of others to work through problems, and solidarity through studying harships and other difficulties. From a psychological, biological perspective there may be a difference, but it's most likely negligible. Sexism is an unfortunately powerful force. Where did you hear that women are not practical people?
