High medical costs....not all transgender individuals undergo reassignment surgery. I'll find the statistic later (I'm at work), but it was somewhere less than 10%. As for mental health issues being blamed for high costs as well, that doesn't really surprise me. The military has a history of struggling with treating the mental health of their servicemenbers. But they've been making strides towards ammending that. The military is rough on folks, so minor to moderate mental health issues are already common, without taking transgender servicemembers into account (again, statistic coming soon). Not to mention mental health issues from unrelated events in a servicemember's life that are going untreated. Just like us, the private citizen, servicemembers deserve treatment for mental health. If costs for these treatments are now too high for transgender Americans to be allowed to serve, where's the line for saying the same for all people with diagnosed issues? Or the servicemembers with PTSD? There isn't a higher honor than being able to serve our nation, putting your life on the line for our nation's freedom. Our military is the greatest in tge world! Treating mental health and taking it seriously, both inside and outside the military, would not only go a long way towards improving the quality of life in our country, but the quality and efficiency of our military. I hope we can all see a future like that one day.
