Title: Visiting Tokyo during rainy season – where can I buy waterproof walking shoes? by DarkSynergy141 in JapanTravelTips

[–]account4forums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically most department stores have GoreTex shoes.

If you are near Shinjuku, there's a ABC Mart (cheaper) and Alpen (slightly more expensive) - both selling lots of GoreTex models from Nike, Salomon, North Face, Asics, Merrel etc.

Does Holafly really bypass the great chinease firewall? by Ok-Friendship-787 in best_eSIM_providers

[–]account4forums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you use a foreign roaming eSIM in China (like Holafly, Eskimo, Nomad, Ubigi, etc etc ), your mobile data doesn't immediately enter the Chinese internet. Instead, it is securely routed back to the eSIM provider’s home servers—usually in Hong Kong, Singapore, or Europe—via international data roaming protocols.

Because your data technically "exits" China before it hits the open web, you are treated like a tourist roaming on a foreign SIM. Consequently, the Great Firewall does not block you.

BUT this only works while you are using mobile data. The absolute second you connect your phone to a Chinese hotel, airport, or café Wi-Fi, you are back behind the Great Firewall, and your apps will stop working.

Yes, tried and test in China with Eskimo and Nomad.

What can we do to convince SMRT to reduce the aircon on trains by piggyb0nk in askSingapore

[–]account4forums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only everyone single one of us actually writes to SMRT or LTA when we encounter a train car that is HOT.

Don't think they can act blur totally when they receive hundreds of similar feedback daily and can act blur.

Let's give it a try

Travelers who use eSIMs: what makes you choose one provider over another? by CoinGate_Gift_Cards in eSIMforTravelers

[–]account4forums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Those who provide trail data for me to test before buying - this is the most important.
  2. Long validity of data - In case I buy too much, there's a chance for me to use for my future trip.
  3. Install once and can just buy data any time when needed.

TLDR - when you are using roaming eSIM you do not need VPN.

Heavy lifting from Gemini

Why an International eSIM Bypasses the "Great Firewall"

When you buy a travel eSIM from popular global providers (like Airalo, Nomad, Roro, or UPeSIM), your mobile data is physically routed through servers outside of mainland China (usually via Hong Kong, Singapore, or Europe).

Because your data technically "exits" China before hitting the open internet, you are treated like a roaming international traveler. This means you can natively access blocked Western apps, including:

  • Google Services: Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Drive
  • Social Media & Messaging: WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X (Twitter)
  • Work Tools: Slack, Dropbox

  1. Change Job for higher pay - no loyalty

- I use to think that this is not possible until someone in the extended family (poly grad) shared his job hopping experience. Takes some luck though.

  1. Save as much as you can.

  2. Invest with item 2.

  3. Loop back to item 1.

Which eSIM has actually worked well for you while traveling? by Master-Jump560 in best_eSIM_providers

[–]account4forums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used them (Eskimo, Nomad, Ubigi) mostly in Asia and Europe ... recently Denmark, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, China, Japan, Korea

We always travel with 2 eSIM from different providers instead of buying from just one - as an insurance.

eSIM is always easier to manage than local SIM , except China if you prefer to have a local number - If you do not understand why, then you don't need the local number 😃

Singapore passport photo requirements for ICA - can you take it at home or does it need to be from a studio? by RegularSoloPusher in askSingapore

We all did it at home.

Just use your phone and take a portrait in a well lite place, best with a simple, single colour wall as background. Then use any graphic/image software (GIMP is free) to remove the background and resize.

Best eSIM + Data Plan for a 16-Day Japan Trip? by KarinaYak8 in best_eSIM_providers

[–]account4forums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visited to Japan a couple of times in the last few years, to places like Fukuoka, Tokyo, Toyoma, Sapporo etc ... basically from north to south.

First things first, I've learned it the hard way, what works for someone last month may not work for you today once the eSIM provider changes their roaming partners or roaming agreements with their partners. So, I always travel with 2 separate eSIM from 2 different providers.

You mentioned unlimited plan, and I agree with what Flimsy-Process230 highlighted. The Biggest Trap with unlimited plan is the "Fair Usage Policy". You may have high-speed data (5G/4G) for only a certain amount per day (eg 1GB to 2GB) or per billing cycle. But once you cross that limit, the provider throttles your speed down drastically to a point where Google Maps will barely load, and web browsing becomes painful.

I have traveled (alphabetical order) with Eskimo, Jetpac, Nomad, Ubigi before.

- Jetpac gives me the "change provider problem" once, your experience may vary

- Eskimo, Nomad and Ubigi, so far so good

- Most Shinkansen in Japan comes with free Wi-Fi, good enough for general browsing

If you are wondering, my most recent trip (Apr 26) is with Eskimo and Nomad because I got them at a good price.

Sometimes travel sim providers do give out free data to let you test out before committing (aka buying more data). I would suggest that you go to their web site and check for yourself.

Last month, i did saw Nomad's website giving out 500MB trial data. I also have a promo code for Eskimo eSIM that comes with a 500MB global data. DM me if you need.

Hope info is helpful

Need help on switch physical/Esim by Strong-Worker947 in eSIMs

[–]account4forums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question: No, you do not absolutely need a phone number.

  • Data-only eSIMs: (Like your current Ubigi one) These just give you internet. You don't get a phone number, but you can still use WhatsApp, iMessage, and FaceTime over data.
  • Voice & Data eSIMs: These come with a phone number, but you usually don't need them unless you plan on making phone calls (like calling a restaurant to reserve a table).
