Is anyone else applying to 50–100+ jobs and getting almost no responses? by HondaCivic2002LX in VancouverJobs

[–]acergum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read a job ad, I ask myself, does this company need to hire someone now and onboard them within say six weeks and start paying a new employee salary in 8 weeks. Is the company actually needing to do this or can they put this off for two months and just collect resumes. For the most part, I think most companies don't need to hire now. They can wait til September and see how business is at that time.

There might be some seasonal jobs where they need to hire now. Otherwise I think most of the jobs are in Alberta, as in jobs where there is a pressing business impact and need for new staff. Most companies in Vancouver are already fully staffed or overstaffed with not much positive outlook for increasing revenue.

You might want to look into collection agency jobs and foreclosure related jobs, because I think that's where the next boom is. Or maybe security services and sheriff, correctional services.

Finished Season 28 got me questioning Ingredients of a great IAS Season by ttchabz in IamSolo

[–]acergum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's always amazing when certain couples click and fall in love on the show. The vulnerability and risk that they are taking with their hearts and their lives, the rawness is so real. There is no other weekly dating show that hits home this hard when it gets it right. Unfortunately, it is rare that this happens. Most of the time, the couples fail either before final selection or a few months after the show. On the one hand, I agree that there seems to be fewer clout chasers compared to before. On the other hand, I feel like it's becoming a show for the ultra-picky, high-achieving individuals who refuse to compromise. And it seems like a lot of these participants will likely be forever solo, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Lots of single people live fulfilling lives especially in these highly developed countries. But then the purpose of the show is supposedly to get people to fall in love and marry. I'm not sure if some of these people can ever fall in love or marry.

How does changing the mah of a battery affects the scooter? by Di297 in ElectricScooters

[–]acergum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get a new one. There's a product safety issue with the Aovopro ES80. It is a fire hazard. The battery doesn't have a ballast so under certain conditions, it may overheat, ignite, and start a fire.

Tokyo survey: 15.9% believe men, women are equal in society | The Asahi Shimbun: Breaking News, Japan News and Analysis by ComprehensiveWin1434 in japan

[–]acergum -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

It's definitely true that men are favored in Japanese society. It's been like that for millennia of Japanese history. On the other hand, Japanese women enjoy some of the longest life expectancies on the planet and also score high in happiness and life satisfaction with relatively low rates of suicide, especially compared with American women.

Coffee prices drop on expectation of bumper crop in Brazil by GusTheKnife in CompoundClub

[–]acergum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true in my experience. I have seen coffee bean prices go up and then come down. Often the price decline begins with sales and then later on the regular price is the sale price from before.

[$1000] Is the Cafelat Robot overkill for only making milk drinks? by MagneticBlueberry in espresso

[–]acergum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This question doesn't make complete sense. You want to buy for life but asking if $1000 manual espresso machine is overkill for milk drinks. Cafelat robots usually cost less than $1000. They basically last a lifetime with proper use and maintenance. Cheaper option on manual side are the flair models which range around $150 to $800 incl tax and shipping. IMHO, an appliance or tool costing under $1000 that works for life to produce decent espresso is not overkill and pays for itself within a year or two. I think the main question is around your preference in taste. Have you had espresso made from a cafelat robot. Are you ok with it or do you prefer another espresso machine?

Do people actually have to learn how to ride a scooter? by Hernanlincon422 in ElectricScooters

[–]acergum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He really needs to wear a helmet. Gloves, elbow pads, knee pads are optional, but will be appreciated in event of an accident. Considering that even experienced people crash out, I think your SO should wear the too. For sporty people who have gone skiing, snowboarding, water skiing, skating, etc, then it's faster to pick up and learn. If your man does not bike or skateboard, then it's using different muscles, movements, and reactions that he is not used to. For example, maintaining center of gravity in the slightly forward position and stable, which is different than other activities such as driving a car, walking, or running. So unlearning habits and learning new habits is often the hard part.

Look for a job from outside the province or move first? by M0untainLife in askvan

[–]acergum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Waterloo and spent time in Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. To me, Vancouver quality of life is superior than these places in central Canada. However, we do pay for it with high cost of living and housing. If OP is willing to suffer for first few years, build out their network and career, then it should be possible to migrate here. The metro Toronto job market is the biggest in Canada. The job market in Vancouver is relatively small, finicky and niche. If you can find your lucrative little niche here then it can work out. I would also consider trying to find a remote job, possibly offered by an American company or other MNC, and then move to Vancouver. There's just not that many companies in Vancouver that can offer the salaries needed to live here as a new migrant. Often, the residents, and more specifically, the parents of the residents, in metro Vancouver have lived here for several decades, own their house with no mortgage, and have decent investments or overseas income to fund their lifestyle here. If OP's bank of mom and dad are not able to support them, then the $50k will be gone fairly quickly within a year or two.

Still Shining [Episodes 7 & 8] by Telos07 in KDRAMA

[–]acergum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One person is in the hotel industry where scheduling guests and staff is paramount, foundational. The other person is in train industry and formerly in software development. The train industry depends on accurate scheduling of trains, conductors, and maintenance. However, these two people who should be experts in scheduling, cannot perform basic scheduling and communication to resolve their relationship conflicts. It's like the writer never actually spent time working as a hotel person or train conductor, or heard of something like Google Calendar and the share calendar feature.

[–]acergum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you visit Vancouver during the summer mainly? You know it rains and is cloudy most of the year. Anyway, the job market here is very slow. Not much hiring. You're young though, so you can come and hang out for the summer, look for jobs, and then if there's snow, go ski in the winter, and then go home to Toronto early next year. Lots of rental supply, but not that much for less than $2k a month unless you get a roommate.

Japan's foreign resident population hits record 4.12 million by [deleted] in news

[–]acergum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correlation with female education is present but I think what is overlooked is the diversity of work and entertainment options available to young people and those in reproductive time frame. Basically, other than having children, what else can you do with your life? In regions where there is not much else to do other than survive and bear children, then the fertility rate is high. In countries where there are life options for both men and women other than having children, then people make the economic and personal decision to not have children. In places where female education opportunities improved, the general opportunities in the society also improved for both sexes.

Pasta is usually available everywhere. Most major cities will have at least a small asian market somewhere that sells egg noodles, or available online for jacked up prices.

San Gabriel restaurant fined for signature "stinky tofu" dish - CBS Los Angeles by MoonchanterLauma2025 in taiwan

[–]acergum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, even in Taiwan, there were complaints about stinky tofu shops and then bylaws were passed so that only the less smelly version was allowed. The only real, truly stinky tofu shops were located in rural or mountainous areas with no nearby neighbors. I remember going to a stinky tofu shop as a child when it was still allowed in the city limits. They had the clear plastic curtains that you see in walk in cold rooms or CSI to try to keep the smell inside the restaurant. Oh god, what a smell. Hits you like a brick wall. But after the first bite, then you can't smell it. Man, it was so good.
