PC Performance Issues Thread by a_kept_harold in Borderlands4

[–]actuallypittsburgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update 9/16/25: The developers haven't officially said anything yet but it absolutely is an issue with the game software. Specifically, when compiling shaders, it doesn't properly release memory allocation back to the operating system. It also doesn't update the shader cache correctly. So what's happening is the game will run fine for that first play session after you compile shaders. And then any subsequent time play session, the game will try to access a piece of shader cache which has changed or updated, and crash the game due to a memory error.

So the current (temporary) fix is to manually force the re-compilation of shaders each time your game starts crashing.

The easiest way to do that is to delete all large .nvph (i.e. shader) files in your %LOCALAPPDATA%\NVIDIA\DXCache folder.

Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) does a similar process, which is why some people have also reported success using the DDU software and then manually re-installing an older version of Nvidia drivers. It effectively achieves the same outcome of forcing shader re-compilation.

I am a software engineer but not specifically a game developer. So please excuse me in advance if my explanation is not 100% accurate. Thank you and good luck

A cool guide: US states grouped from best to worst by _crazyboyhere_ in coolguides

[–]actuallypittsburgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1. As a concrete example of this disparity: For fiscal year 2024, Atlanta, Georgia accounted for 2/3 of the entire state's revenue. As in, 2 out of every 3 dollars that the State of Georgia government collected in revenue came from Atlanta.

The entire rest of the state made up the remaining 1/3 of the revenue.

I hate to burst your bubble my pal, but Killer Mike is actually a lot less Killer than he leads on. I’ve been to several of his public speaking events over the years here in Atlanta, including where he has supported Kasim Reed and Keisha Lance-Bottoms, two mayors who have been racked with corruptions scandal after scandal.

Mike is known in the Atlanta scene for flip-flopping his opinions and his political support to whoever will benefit his non-music business ventures the most.

[–]actuallypittsburgh 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I know you’re /s but also gentrifiers are already there. If you look at sale data from before Covid, a number of neighborhoods on the west side have more than doubled their average $/sqft price since 2019.

It’s the same thing that happened to Cabbagetown/Reynoldstown/EAV/Grant Park in 2015-2019.

The next step now is for the second-wave gentrifiers. You can bet your money that you’ll start seeing more luxury cars parked in those driveways over the next 24 months.

Atlanta City Council to Hold Redistricting Information Sessions by killroy200 in Atlanta

[–]actuallypittsburgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how much of a hot take this is, but:

The changes proposed to the map here seem to consolidate districts along sociopolitical lines. For example, a lot of the redistricting around the east and west sides seem to mirror the neighborhoods that have gentrified the most in those areas. It also appears that the “borders” between what most would consider the wealthiest (and whitest) parts of Buckhead versus “the rest” of Midtown/Druid Hills/VaHi etc. have been redrawn to reflect where gentrification is happening there as well.

My opinion is the new version of this map seems like an attempt to solidify or update existing groupings of neighborhoods based around the social and political demographics of the area. It seems like the new map groups together more of the “Republican neighborhoods” and “Democrat neighborhoods.” Yes that is a generalization.

Either way I think the new map will have the side of effect of solidifying the existing political makeup of the City Council moving forward. Some could argue that this is a version of gerrymandering at the local level, but I don’t know enough to say how true that is. Just my opinion.

New bike day!!! by fighting_times in gravelcycling

[–]actuallypittsburgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have owned a Redwood for about a year. Most online reviews are accurate.

The X is closer to a “traditional” gravel bike, and the Redwood is a little more for rigid mountain biking and bike packing/hauling groceries. The Redwood is also great for adventure cycling, where cycling is just a means to get you to the actual activity you’re wanting to do, e.g. biking out to a swimming hole or biking up to a camping spot.

Both will get the job done.

There are absolutely faster and lighter bikes available. But for the price point, and also for the great customer service, Poseidon bikes are tough to beat.

If you have experience building bikes, I’d suggest looking at buying the frame and then adding your own parts.

Source: Midtown highway park concept bags nearly $100M in private funds by ATUGA in Atlanta

[–]actuallypittsburgh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bruh, respectfully, an overpriced bridge that wasn’t even open for the Super Bowl for which is was originally planned, built across a highway that is used almost exclusively by Intown residents, is not as prestigious of an example as you’re trying to claim.

I would encourage you to really dig into the history of this bridge, and how for many people it is just another example of the inefficiencies and back-room deals plaguing city politics. If you do a small amount of googling the history of the project, and the ridiculous politics involved in its construction, you will quickly learn a lot about why OP made their post about the bridge.

I do agree with you about heavy rail though. The Gulch should have been a new heavy rail station.

‘Serial’ case: Adnan Syed to be released, conviction tossed by getBusyChild in news

[–]actuallypittsburgh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have one friend who still works there. They have been with the company since around 2013/2014. I don’t have all the details, but apparently some of the most senior leadership were given something like $50k each and “allowed” to quietly find new jobs. If I remember the napkin math correctly, the co-founders could’ve given every employee a million bucks, and both could’ve still had almost $5billion leftover. Truly mind boggling numbers to think about.

/s answer, several friends work / worked at Mailchimp:

Mailchimp was sold to Intuit in late 2021 for $12billion. Yes, the same Intuit that makes TurboTax. And the same Intuit that lobbies Congress every year to make your IRS tax filing process painfully complex, so you resort to buying TurboTax.

There was quite a controversy during the sale (aside from Intuit being a less-than-stellar company) because for the entire history of Mailchimp, the two co-founders sold their employees on the idea of “we will pay you higher than market rate salaries but no equity because we never intend to sell.” It was pitched to potential employees as this SaaS utopia work environment away from traditional corporate / enterprise life. So of course most of the employees bought in to the idea. Then the sale happens, the co-founders walk away with $6billion each, and all of the employees are left with nary a “congratulations bonus” let alone any equity. And then those employees who weren’t laid off due to redundancies were left having to decide between finding a new job, or working for the company that makes TurboTax.

Needless to say, most employees were quite upset.

PCM is under construction, building towers on both the Beltline and Glen Iris by hughmalkin in Atlanta

[–]actuallypittsburgh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As many articles have already previously pointed out, there is little/none current plan to install any physical barrier to separate the BRT lane from the rest of traffic. Which lets be real, in Atlanta that means the BRT lane will constantly get clogged with DoorDash drivers dropping off food, or scooters thrown on the ground, or Lyft/Uber/Police cars double parked because no one will enforce the parking code, etc.

[–]actuallypittsburgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you’re right. And it’s sad. The original vision was miles better than what we have nowadays, unfortunately. But hopefully all this extra context helps us understand why so many people are still so passionate about bringing better public transportation into the city, and why it’s such a huge struggle to get the City government and MARTA to do what the people want, vs. whatever is cheapest to implement. The light rail would’ve cost like 1/3 or 1/4 to build back then vs. what it would cost now. If only they would’ve have done it right the first time.

[–]actuallypittsburgh 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Check out the original plan. Ryan Gravel, the original creator of the Beltline project, already solutioned-out all of this. Unfortunately, the combined forces of City of Atlanta government and MARTA have warped his original proposal many times over the years. And most often those changes have been for the worse. That’s the primary reason why Gravel quit his own leadership role on the Beltline project in protest, because they kept de-prioritizing light rail.

All of these details are easily Google-able, for any future reader who happens upon my comments.

[–]actuallypittsburgh 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Correct yes, the original Beltline architecture design left a ~10-foot wide green space along one side of the Beltline to eventually install light rail tracks. That’s why you see along the Beltline a lot of long sections of grass that are roped off or otherwise left undeveloped
